29 August 1967 attack on JSA Camp Kitty Hawk

I am seeking further information on a incident which occurred at Camp Kitty Hawk on 29 August 1967. According to what little information I have found on the Internet, North Korean infiltrators in the DMZ established a machine gun position on a nearbly hill and opened fire on JSA soldiers waiting in line outside a dining facility. Reportedly, one American and two ROK Katusas were killed and a number of other soldoers were wounded. Anyone remembering this incident or knowing further information about it (especially the names of the three killed JSA soldiers), please contact me.

50 years of trip-wire weirdness end as US leaves Korean border By Richard Spencer, China Correspondent (Filed: November 2, 2004) The world's sole remaining Cold War frontier post lost its American guards yesterday when the United States withdrew from the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea. Its abandonment of Panmunjom, the "truce village" of huts and observation posts that has been described as the weirdest as well as the most threatening settlement on earth, ends a 50-year history full of intrigue. From now on, it will be manned just by the forces of the two Koreas, as the US reduces its 27,000-strong military in South Korea by a third. Panmunjom owes its existence to the armistice that ended the Korean Warin 1953. As the North refused to recognise the government of the South, the two remain technically at war. Until the 1970s, the village, a mere 800 yards in diameter, was undivided, with North and South Koreans and Americans circling each other warily. After two American officers accompanying a party pruning a tree were hacked to death by axe-wielding North Korean soldiers, a line was literally drawn on the concrete. Three huts sit on the actual border, used under complex of rules for meetings between the two sides and for tourist visits. The rooms inside have boardroom tables with the

border marked on them. But tourists are allowed to wander freely inside the huts - so long as the other country's door remains locked. One party of tourists was held up on a visit last year by a two-hour negotiation in one of the huts. When it was over, American officials emerged carrying paint-strips: the meeting, it turned out, had been to discuss what colour the huts should be redecorated. For the American soldiers, who contributed half of the 550-strong contingent on the south side, Panmunjom was a posting where the usual dullness sometimes obscured the fact that a diplomatic slip could lead to their instant destruction. Most agreed that the demilitarised zone could not delay a serious North Korean attack. The official term for the American presence was a "trip-wire" -triggering an automatic response if it was attacked. The soldiers used to refer to themselves as a speed bump. There was some entertainment at their quarters just outside the demilitarised zone, and a favourite pastime - driving golf balls on to a minefield nearby. The worst job was lorry duty - as no weapons other than side-arms are allowed in the zone itself, two men have to remain on permanent watch onthe edge of the zone with a lorry full of arms in case of an "incident". The last such was in the mid-1980s.

Just checking in..........it's been a while. Was a 95B10 (MP) assigned to the escort section badge #168, 76 to 78. Spent some time with the Swiss and Swedes, and then was DCO's and CO's driver. Drove mostly for Maj Lowery, and LTC Cramer. Thanks Dan for this site, I enjoy reading all the notes from other JSA troopers through the years, and looking at the pictures section. Understand the JSA is now in primary control of the ROKs, is this true? Are there any GI types still assigned there? Not as up on this as I would like to be. Anyway, in closing, it is my wish that all past, present, and future JSA troopers have a beautiful holiday season, may the world be good to you and yours', and may you live as long as you want, but never want as long as you live. I audio-recorded a DMZ tour briefing for the tourist-types, both in (at the time Camp Kitty Hawk) briefing room, and later, in the bus on the way up to the JSA, and then finally at the top of Freedom House looking north at the KPA checking us out from the Panmungak building. The tape goes about 20 minutes (if you take out all the DPRK Radio Pyongyang crap I also recorded that day, standing outside Ballenger Hall).

Date: 11 DECEMBER 1984, a few weeks after the USSR Matuzak defection and shoot 'em up.

Interested in finding any US personnel who were stationed in the JSA area at that precise time, and in fact may have been one of the (Specialist) briefers for us that day. If not overwhelmed with e-mail, I could probably arrange to send a copy of the cassette out to some.Remove this entry

My platoon was dispatched to Panmunjom to build a Treadway Bridge across the river so that the negotiators could cross theriver back and forth. There was no place to turn our trucks around at the constructionsite so we had to back the trucks for a very long distance. I recently found a picturein my archives of my truck at the bridge site. buddies. I'm trying to find the names of two soldiers one who was killed and one who had his foot blown up. I remember Sgt Cowley (2001) but his first name i don't remember RIP SGT. The other soldier was a medic served there around 2001 or 2002Remove this entry

I was 17 when in country for 2 months before I turned 18. Looking for anyone that I served with during that time frame. I have lots of pictures from there. Most of us when we left got stationed at Ft Campbell KY. And also looking to get a challenge coin From JSA. ThanksDavid DausmanRemove this entry

I see a lot of 69-70 guys on here and wanted to make sure you know that the VA has admitted and accepted the fact that Agent Orange was used there in 69-70. Agent Orange can cause many diseases, including cancer, and adult diabetes. Check with the VA if you have questions. I have type 2 diabetes but the claim orange wasnt used there in 72.

I was a PFC in the 4th Platoon, Barbarians, (SFC Butler was the Platoon Sergeant) for most of my tour until I was kidnapped to be a "Tour Guide" for the last couple months. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembered me from the coolest assignment of my career. My photo album always sits out in any office I work in. COL Ronald Green (one of the best officers I ever met) and then COL Viali was the Group Commander, MAJ Eikenberry (also a great officer who is now a 2 or 3 star General) was the XO. I have only foggy recollections of some of the funnier events, like "Chief" diving out the second floor window or PFC Rice pretending to whack off in the back of the deuce and a half to amuse the Katusas. As always, In Front of Them All!

Yep, ol' Rocky Burke and I get together and wish we were still young strapping dudes working the babes. "Wish" being the operative word there.

One thing is clear to all that know either Rocky or I: we are proud to have served with and among some of the Army's finest at JSA. I am personally grateful for the experience, and I thank God everyday I had the opportunity to serve as a member of the 1st Platoon.

I spent nearly a decade in the service, and had some damn good duty. But, nothing compares to the tour at JSA -- being up north, going to Seoul, any vill, any tea room, any party...we ruled the roost...let there be no doubt.

Nothing compares anywhere I have ever been since.

Salute, and God bless you all. Remove this entry
