Entrepreneur Johnny Doeseb, and newly elected President NCCI (Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Walvis Bay, has stepped into a thriving operation, with the latest figures revealing assets and a cash balance totaling N$5.3 million.

This figure was confirmed by Doeseb, who said that this is the only chamber in the country that owns a N$2.8 million property, and that the committee has inherited "an enormously strong organisation".

Doeseb, who is a dynamic and successful entrepreneur in the Walvis Bay business community, gave credit to well-known businessman John Savva - a former Vice President of the organisation, and longest serving member of 40 years. He further praised the outgoing President Tony Raw, saying that his credibility and trustworthy leadership skills have placed the NCCI in an even greater position of strength, and is confident about the way going forward.

"The unwavering support of these two key business figures and the role that they have played in building up the Walvis Bay NCCI is unquestionable,"

Doaseb continued, adding that Savva has been a rock solid pillar behind the organisation which, through his influence, has elevated the NCCI from virtually nothing to the branch that it is today.

"I am truly honoured to be taking the reins to lead the Walvis Bay business fraternity, and am grateful for the confidence that the business community has entrusted in me," he continued.

After celebrating two years of feeding starving and underprivileged pets in the DRC and Mondesa areas, this charity driven mother and daughter Feed-A-Paw Project team is getting recognition from some of the big retail outlets and community support.

This past week-end, whilst displaying its first adoption promotion for rescued pups outside Super Spar Swakopmund, this non profit project was offered a monthly pet food sponsorship by Spar's Owner Ryner Du Preez.

Madelaine Strydom and her daughter Michelle started the non profit Feed-A-Paw project after witnessing the overwhelming need of township animals who are suffering in terrible conditions, due to the abject poverty most people are living in.

This is the only project of its kind in Namibia, and is run by these two caring women who pay weekly visits to the townships of DRC and Mondesa where they feed over 500 dogs and even cats. Dogs that are neglected, malnourished, sick or dying are given priority, and regular trips are made every week, in addition to the two feeding days to collect animals that are in desperate need of veterinary care.

These are animals that have been either run over, injured, stabbed or otherwise need to be treated for tick bite fever, STD (sexually transmitted disease), mange (which is a big problem in the damp conditions of Swakopmund) and other illnesses.

Madelaine, who works side by side with her daughter week in and week out, to make sure no animal goes hungry

or is left to suffer alone, said that they could not ignore the plight of hundreds of starving and neglected dogs in these areas which are left to mostly roam the streets in search of food.

"We could not turn a blind eye on the suffering around us, and started the Feed-A-Paw project to not only feeds the animals, but provide vet care to the sick and injured," explained Madelaine.

"We rely heavily on funds and donations, because even though we subsidise a lot, the costs are mounting up as

we take on more animals," she added, saying that her family funded the project out of their own pocket for the first few months before they received any donations, but is so thankful to the generosity of the community.

She explained that about 30 kilograms of mealie meal is cooked up every week, mixed in with vegetable peels and left over foods donated by shops and restaurants, which fills four huge cooler boxes for each feed. She said that on the days they don't cook, they also distribute up to three bags

of dog pellets to the dogs, and that the SPAR Swakopmund donation is going to come in handy.

The Feed-A-Paw project also works closely with the national charity drive Have-A-Heart sterilisation campaign, in an ongoing effort to reduce the unwanted litters of puppies.

All donations big and small are welcome to keep this project going, and if you cannot help with food, bowls, maize meal and other necessary items, the Feed-A-Paw Project face book page has all the details where donations can be made.

Walvis Bay Mayor, Immanuel Wilfried, has called on the residents of the town, especially the youth, to behave responsibly at all times and consider the safety of others.

Addressing the monthly ordinary council meeting on Tuesday last week, Wilfried said road incidents have increased on coastal roads. “We need to do some serious introspection as to why the traffic rules are broken and people recklessly endanger their own lives and those of others,” he said.

He said month end is particularly dangerous, as drunkenness and disorderly behaviors are the order of the day. “I therefore appeal to all our

residents, especially our young people, to behave responsibly at all times and to consider the safety of others. Furthermore, I call on our traffic and police officers to increase visibility on our roads and in our suburbs to curb road violations and other crimes,” said Wilfried.

He also called on schools in the town to perform at their optimal level to make Erongo Region the best in the country again. “If you think of it, half the academic year is over, leaving us with very little time to catch up before the final exams are written. However, I have confidence in our learners and teachers that we can restore our region’s reputation for quality education this year,” he added.

The new leadership was elected at the Annual General Meeting of the chambers held on the 26 May. Vilho Nevongo has been elected Vice President, whilst former President, Tony Raw and former Vice President, John Savva, have been co-opted into the

new leadership as advisers.Other members of the new

leadership are Tobias Junior Katjire, Victoria Shiinda, Joshua Mbako, Danny Beukes, Patrick Bathromeus, Ringo Nuwuseb, Ivanton Marshall, Ndamana Iipinge, Nande Muatunga and Dannie Malherbe. They will serve the Walvis Bay Branch Chamber of Commerce and Industry for a two-year term.

officials, Mutjavikua said that, despite significant challenges borne out of weak commodity prices, the region is still posing positive economic and business prospects, despite another difficult year ahead of continued pressure from commodity prices, drought and water supply challenges, amongst others.

He stated that the slump in commodity prices, which affected our Uranium belt negatively, are posing challenges in the labour market and weakening the contribution to foreign exchange earnings.

"Our import and export sector experienced a serious nose dive in revenue and our ship repair industry was severely affected, with labour market challenges on the horizon and the possibility of more than hundred employees losing their employment at EBH," he said.

Agriculture is considered to be one of the most vulnerable sectors because of the adverse effects of climate change in Erongo Region he stressed, saying, "The three years’ consecutive drought and water shortages affected the economic activities of our region and put acute pressure on household food security. As a result of our region being arid, water shortages for our growing industries, livestock and household consumption is seriously challenged and the situation is bleak."

But on the up side, he further stated that the Erongo Region continues to attract major projects that contribute to its economy, in particular the construction of the multi-million dollar Namport container terminal which is well on schedule and will be commissioned in mid to late 2018.

Another point of interest

is the new N$900 million Terminal Building at Walvis Bay International Airport, which is in its final stages of completion, and is designed around a sustained passenger flow of 200 passengers per hour, catering for 1 million passengers per annum.

The terminal development has been accompanied by upgrades of adjacent aprons, whilst the upgraded terminals offer a variety of retail outlets.

The upgrading to bitumen standards project, on the road stretching from Swakopmund to Henties Bay along the western coast of Namibia, and then from Henties Bay inland to Uis, will comprise a total of 690 km to be brought up to a bitumen standards as part of the Harambee Prosperity Plan by 2019.

Mutjavikua talked about 'The Green Village’, a new suburb for ultra-low-income residents of Walvis Bay, which is at an advanced stage. "The metropolitan areas of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund are growing at an alarming rate and more residential erven should be made available," he stated.

The Green Village is said to cater for those who currently reside in backyard shacks in Walvis Bay, and will be located at Farm 37, situated about five km outside the harbour town, en route to Utuseb.

According to the governor, alternative building methods and laying of services would also be considered to reduce the prices.

Mutjavikua also said he is currently engaging the regional council and Swakopmund Municipality to emulate the example of Walvis Bay to come up with a similar “ultra-low-income suburb” east of the Democratic Resettlement Community in Swakopmund.

Schalk Burger was still a young boy when his relationship with the vine started – he used to do holiday work on a farm specialising in table grapes. His real passion for winemaking developed when he was still a student – and it was a dream that would become reality over the years when, in 2004, he made his own bottles of chenin blanc/chadonnay and pinotage/cabernet/merlot in his own cellar. He shared his passion for wine, and some of the best wines from his estate, Welbedacht, with guests at the Strand Hotel earlier this week following on from a successful wine

evening in Walvis Bay.The legendary former Springbok rugby

player, whose son has lately been carrying the legacy forward, was in Namibia to participate in the Afrikaans Private Schools’ Sport weekend in Keetmanshoop, and used the opportunity to pay a quick visit to the coast and share some of his wines with connoisseurs and enthusiasts.

He said it still sometimes feels unreal to think that his dream of having his own, self-designed cellar on his own wine estate has become his life. He is clearly still very passionate about winemaking, and truly interested in the science behind a glass of wine. But in the same instant, he says, in the company of good friends

and loved ones, even a mediocre bottle of wine can prove to be a treasure at the end of the evening. Burger says he loves coming to Namibia, and has noticed lately that many Namibians’ interest in wine and wine tasting has developed. He says he and his wine agent and representative, Dieter Jentsch, has seen a lively interest in wine lately.

Guests could taste a wide range of the Welbedacht and Meerkat ranges from Burger’s cellar whilst ordering from the Strand Hotel’s Butcher and Brewer’s a la carte menu, while outside, the weather reminded strongly of the Cape – with thunder roaring, “real rain” falling , and lightning dancing out at sea.

Men can fight cancer too you know - and to prove a point the first Annual Men’s Breakfast function in support of men fighting cancer was held in Swakopmund, and hosted by Dr Wolfgang Tietz on Saturday morning.

The event was attended by just over 150 guests – mostly men – who enjoyed presentations ranging from “General Men’s Health – a healthy lifestyle perspective”; information and understanding on Prostate Cancer, while Torsten Koehler of the “Love your Nuts” campaign in South Africa did a talk on Testicular Cancer.

Torsten himself was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer in his early

30’s. He was a teacher in Windhoek and told guests about his life-changing journey: “The fear of death, the state of acceptance, the journey of recovery and finally the mission to inform, educate and empower is why I am here today!”

The morning was rounded off with a 45-minute comedy show by internationally acclaimed comedian, Barry Hilton.

Blue Month was officially launched at the end of the morning’s formality where the public was encouraged to buy a black and blue t-shirt from the Cancer Association of Namibia in support of Men Fighting Cancer in Namibia.

T-shirts are available at the Association at 90 John Meinert Street, Windhoek West.

URBAN and Rural Development Minister, Sophia Shaningwa, said it is disheartening for her Ministry to learn that some Regional Councils were not using money allocated to them, while people are suffering from poverty.

Shaningwa said some Regional Councils are keeping funds in their accounts, instead of using them for projects that could help alleviate poverty in the country. “This practice must cease with immediate effect. Why should you keep millions in your accounts while people are suffering?” she said. She made these remarks at five-day Annual Rural Development Progress and Planning Workshop held at Walvis Bay last week.

Shaningwa warned that there will be a time when she will be forced to expose such Regional Councils, “so that people know and tell us why you want to make interest on the money,” she said.

Shaningwa did not mince her words, saying, she was also concerned by some regional councilors and officials who have been trained several times, but then come back from training without having captured any knowledge.

“Too much training and less capturing. Maybe there is no

commitment. What's wrong with us, still doing the same mistake? Chief Regional Officers, those who are not trainable, can't you replace them? It is a waste of resources. And we are calling ourselves young? We need to move with time. We cannot just invest in you and at the end of the day, you come out the same person. When you want votes, you talk too much,” said an angry Shaningwa.

She called on Regional Councils to ensure full accountability at all times and an electronic monitoring and evaluation system, has been introduced in her Ministry. She pointed out that rural areas are very important to focus on for development as the majority of Namibia lives there.

Poverty and inequalities, she said, can endanger social harmony, and rural development is not only the responsibility of her Ministry but other Ministries also have activities towards addressing poverty and inequality in the country.

In her welcoming remarks, Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Councilor, Hafeni Ndemula, said development outside urban areas is important as it will address the problem or rural-urban migration. Therefore, he said, rural areas should be empowered under “One Region, One Initiative.” The workshop was held from 30 May – 3 June 2016.

ATKV Applous - Namibian Choirs “Of Higher Standard”

The Namib Primary Aula Resounded with choir music this weekend, when the Namibian regional festival of the 2016 ATKV Applous Choir Competition was held. Namibian choirs as far as Windhoek and Otjiwarongo competed in the 39th Annual Applous Choir Competition on Saturday.

The Aula of the Namib Primary School in Swakopmund was filled to capacity, although a much smaller group of choirs participated this year – Secondary School Swakopmund, Otjiwarongo Secondary School, Swakopmund School of Excellence, and 2 Choirs of St. Georges Diocesan School.

The Regional Festival was hosted again by the Mascato Youth Choir, who had dedicated 3 chaperones to each choir. Choir members assembled at the Aula since early Saturday morning,

to get themselves in gear for the competition. The judges were Petru Grabe and Theo Cookson.

A delightful programme had been put together by the Mascatos.

The programme was opened by the Namib Youth Choir. The talented administrator of Mascato, Ailly Namupala, extended a warm welcome to everyone present, and kept the audience informed and entertained throughout. The Mascatos surprised with a sterling impromptu performance and another local group of note, the A Capella group, African Vocals, entertained the audience while the judges were finalising their decisions.

Choirs had around 20 minutes each to perform. One of the four items on each choir’s list was a prescribed work. The choirs of Otjiwarongo Senior Secondary School and of St. Georges Diocesan School were awarded Gold,

while the Swakopmund School of Excellence, who participated for the first time, received Silver. Swakopmund Secondary School got a bronze medal. But were the parents in the audience to award medals, every single choir would perhaps have received Gold!!

Ailly Namupala expressed hope that more choirs would participate in the Namibian leg of the competition next year.

The judges told Namib Independent after the competition, that the standard at this year’s regional festival in Swakopmund had been much higher than the previous years. Theo Cookson said it had been the fourth time for Namibian choirs to participate, and that he had noticed an improvement in the overall standard of participating choirs. Petru Grabe, the judge from South Africa, agreed with Cookson, and said previously no choir had been awarded Gold – this year, 3 choirs got Gold. He

was also very impressed with the choirs’ interpretation of indigenous music, and the intricate rhythms of some of the songs.

The final series of the Applous – the choir competition’s winners’ concerts

will be held in Stellenbosch in August and more than 40 Gold medal holders will take part.

Grabe said they listened to and adjudicated the performances of around 190 choirs this year.

The Erongo region is suffering from a severe water shortage, and the groundwater has reached its maximum. To supply water to the Trekkopje mining project and limit AREVA’s impact on the environment, AREVA Resources Namibia constructed the first seawater desalination plant in southern Africa.

Thanks to the Erongo Desalination Plant (EDP) NamWater has been able to meet the water demand of the other uranium mines (Rössing Uranium, Langer Heinrich Mine and Swakop Uranium’s new Husab Mine) when pumping from the Omaruru Delta (Omdel) aquifer had to be reduced.

The water supply to mines and communities over the past two years has timeously relieved the increasing water demand and thus guaranteed a sustainable water supply during any hydrological drought at the Coast.

Trekkopje has been settled into a care and maintenance phase until the over-supply of uranium on the world market is depleted and the market conditions improve sustainably.

The uranium market fundamentals remain valid with a 25% higher demand expectation in 2025 compared to 2015 (according to the WNA) in the long term, mainly thanks to the expected strong growth in nuclear reactors in Asia.

In this context, Trekkopje is an asset for AREVA in facing this market evolution as the site’s advanced construction state enables a quick restart of the project: as a responsible uranium mining leader, AREVA takes an active part in the development of the territories where it is present, in dialogue and supports with our direct stakeholders as well as the public at large; hence our information forum today.

AREVA is the sole owner which is operated by AVENGWater. AVENG Water Treatment (Pty) Ltd, Namibia is a wholly owned business of AVENG Water and the AVENG Group. AVENG Water Treatment (Pty) Ltd is contracted

to operate & maintain the Erongo Sea Water Desalination Plant, based 35 kilometers north of Swakopmund, by AREVA Namibia.

The Erongo Desalination plant was originally built to supply water to the Trekkopje Mine. AREVA Resources Namibia has constructed the first seawater desalination plant in southern Africa. It is located in Wlotzkasbaken.

The fulfilment of a dream has come true for many Namibian Inline Hockey players who will be participating at international level for the first time, and for those returning to the world arena, it’s another chance to pit their skills against some of the world’s best players. Two NIIHA (Namibia Ice and Inline Hockey Association) National teams will be participating at the FIRS 2016 World Inline Hockey Championships in Italy, the host of the 22nd FIRS World Championships, taking place from the 12th–25th June 2016 in two neighbouring towns, Asiago and Roana. There are four divisions: Junior Men, Junior Women, Senior Men and Senior Women. Namibia will be sending teams to participate in the Junior Men and the Senior Women Divisions. These matches will take place from the 11th–17th June with our Junior Men mostly playing on the rink in Roana and our Senior Women in Asiago.

A record number of 17 national teams have entered the Senior Women’s Division, and with the return of Canada and France, the competitive level will be very high.

“Namibians achieved much at Comrades”– Elated Bronkhorst is back from the "Ultimate Human Race"

It was a very happy Johan Bronkhorst who welcomed Namib Independent earlier this week, when we visited to reflect on the Comrades Marathon.

He says the Namibians have done the country proud at this year’s gruelling down run. Ten of the 32 Namibian runners at the Comrades this year were from the coast. Twenty-three Namibians finished in time. Bronkhorst was the first Namibian over the finishing line and achieved his best Comrades time ever. He was also the first Namibian over the line at the Two Oceans Marathon earlier this year. Bronkhorst ran the Comrades in 8 hours 27 minutes and received a Bill Rowan medal, named after the first Comrades winner in 1921. The Bill Rowan medal became an institution in 2000, awarded to runners who finish the marathon under 9 hours.

Johan Bronkhorst is a seasoned runner – he started with long distance running when he was 14 – here in Swakopmund. Then they moved to Gobabis, where he continued with his sport, without realising that it would become the driving force in his life. He has become a devoted athlete, and after 5 years of hard work, the long hours of pacing and focussing paid off - not only in his case, but also for other runners like Kirsty Brits, who also had a very specific running plan, or to be more specific in her case, two!

Brits explained, "Comrades to me this year was a completely new experience... I went in with a game plan. Generally I have

gone with the hope of finishing, but this year, with the amount of training we have been doing, I was hopeful for much more. Thus, this year was not as social as it has been in the past for me. I had targets where I needed to be at certain times and by the grace of God, I was able to stay with it. It was more about staying focused and sticking to the plan!"

Brits had Plan A and Plan B written out on her arms, totally focussed on the goal ahead, and when it became clear that her Plan A was going to be realised, the tears of joy were streaming.

“When I reached 2 km to go, when you are running in Durban and you can already hear the noise of the stadium, I realised I had it in the bag and the tears started. You cannot explain the emotion behind it when you know you have worked so hard and sacrificed so much through the year and on the day you are blessed that it all works out. And then you hit the grass, it is crazy! The noise, the people screaming your name, the sirens and vuvuzelas and then you come around the corner and see the finish line and "sprint" to the finish ... it is something that no-one can take away from you!”

She said that many people think they are nuts, "but as soon as I had finished, I knew that if all goes to plan and I will come back next year. I love the experience. I love the build-up. I love the race, the digging deep, the supporters and KZN. I am nowhere near ready to stop running Comrades!"

Bronkhorst and Brits became a real running duo - they ran 1600 kilometres together, in preparation of the Comrades. With them, a handful of Striders

trained faithfully, mornings at five and again later, almost each day. Each runner had his or her own goal to achieve: Danie Kotze, also a Swakop Strider, was aiming for his first Comrades - and he achieved what he went to do- he finished in time. The youngest member in their training group, Fagan Pocsi, also finished his first Comrades. The oldest member, Pastor Johnie van Niekerk, reached the finishing line this year.

Pieter Greeff did his back-to-back Comrades, and he received his special, third medal on achieving this. Etienne Louw ran his third Comrades, and Werner Bachman who was ‘going for Green’, another major Comrades achievement, did just that! It was a very proud moment to get his permanent number on finishing his 10th Comrades - the number will be his, for the rest of his life.

DROUGHT in the Erongo region is too severe for government to be still conducting research on the matter, said Erongo governor Cleophas Mutjavikua last Friday.

“It is too late for research. The animals are dying while we are researching. Our communal farmers are really trying to save their animals, but the situation is beyond control.”

He was speaking at his state of the region address (SORA) at Swakopmund, where he gave an update on development projects and challenges for the 2016/17 financial year.

Government officials are currently in Erongo, conducting an assessment of the drought situation, but Mutjavikua is not impressed.

He said the drought needs urgent

action.Communal farmers from areas

such as Omatjete, Okombahe, Okaumbaha, Otjohorongo, Ozondati and Otjimbingwe need fodder and water to save the dying animals.

There are about 6 000 communal farmers affected by the drought in the Daures constituency alone.

Fabianus Hivirikee Uaseuapuani, the chairperson of the Zeraeua Traditional Authority at Omatjete, told Nampa in April that he lost 15 head of cattle and knows of some farmers in the Ozondati area, north of Omatjete, who lost about 20 cattle due to the drought.

“Currently, the farmers are grazing their animals along public roads as there is no water. We spoke to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry to provide us with water tankers so that we can

help the farmers.”Nampa also learned that the

regional council is diverting money from its development projects towards drought support, such as the provision of fodder, as an emergency action.

Mutjavikua said some farmers who are able to move their animals in search of grazing have been doing so, and moved them to Otjinene in Omaheke and Okakarara in Otjozondjupa.

“I saw some this week leaving Uis, facing Khorixas. I don’t even know where they plan to go because there is no grazing that side.”

On resettlement farms, Mutjavikua said a final decision was made to give resettlement farm Okongava to communal farmers at Otjimbingwe.

The head of the region said Okongava Ost Farm 72 will be divided into eight sections to be

given to communal farmers who meet resettlement requirements.

He added that Unit B of Neu Schwaben farm, located south of Karibib, will officially be given to the small−scale gemstone miners who are currently staying there.

“These people will be given proper plans to construct houses. We do not want informal settlements on that farm anymore.

Government will also provide them with a clinic, kindergarten and water supply.”
