It was 1975. Muhammad Ali beat Joe Frasier, Mount Everest saw it’s first female reach the summit, Wheel of Fortune was the coolest new show on TV, and North American River Runners opened our doors for business. Since day one, our mission has been to excite, educate and entertain in a fun and professional environment for our guests and staff. As mission statements go, we think it’s a pretty good one, and we pride ourselves on having the best staff in the industry to help make that mission succeed.

From the humble beginnings of a one van and two raft operation, to the over 150 employees and hundreds of thousands of friends we’ve met along the way, the kinship with the rivers remains the same. The rivers taught us passion. The rivers taught us hard work. The rivers taught us that people thrive on challenging themselves. We attempt to pass those lessons on to our guests every day in the hopes that they’ll feel the same passion for the river, for nature, and for being alive, that we do. That passion drives us to continually deliver uncompromising quality on every trip, to every guest, every day. How can we not? For us, it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle.

Within the 50-mile stretch of the New River Gorge National River, the river is divided into two distinct sections, the Upper and Lower New River. At the southern end of the park, the Upper New, the river is more placid than its lower counterpart. Intermediate canoeists encounter a few challenging Class III rapids and beginning boaters enjoy Class I to III rapids for a leisurely float with excellent fishing opportunities. North of Thurmond, the Lower New, the river’s famous whitewater (more than 25 Class II to Class IV rapids) begins in earnest.

Historic mining ghost towns are scattered along the gorge’s walls. Calm pools between rapids offer a chance to swim and to enjoy the scenery and abundance of wildlife...from beaver to cardinal flowers to whitetail deer. With friends from home or from the office, for a day or a week, this is a memorable adventure for both the experienced and beginner rafters.

The Gauley offers more than 100 major rapids, 56 of them Class III-V+. This is Gauley Season and it means unmatched and unforgettable excitement. Within the 25-mile stretch of the Gauley River National Recreation Area, the river is divided into two major sections, the Upper and Lower Gauley River.

The Upper Gauley has the legendary rapids known around the world, like Lost Paddle, Pillow Rock, and Sweet’s Falls. Throughout the river, you’ll encounter steep drops, massive holes and colossal waves. This section is only for the most experienced or extreme of paddlers.

The Lower Gauley consists of roller coaster waves and challenging drops, though not as steep as the Upper. Perfect for adventurous first-time rafters, those who are looking to take their New River experience to the next level, or anyone wanting to ‘get their feet wet’ before taking on the mighty Upper Gauley.

kAyAk SCHOOLKayak students at NARR learn from championship paddlers. Our kayak school staff is comprised of some of the country’s and region’s top freestyle kayakers. The highly-qualified instructors teach beginner and advanced kayak clinics at the NARR Kayak School, which is the longest running kayaking program in the state of West Virginia. Offering single or multi-day clinics, in group or private lesson format. Whether you want to feel more comfortable with your eskimo roll, or are interested in learning the latest freestyle trick, the NARR kayak school can help you take your paddling to the next class.

ROCk CLImbINGThe New River’s calico-colored cliffs hold more than 1,600 routes, making it one of the largest rock climbing areas in the world...and the world has heard about the New River Gorge. It’s not uncommon to find climbers from Canada, France--even South Africa--wandering beneath the sandstone heights. If you’re not an experienced climber, don’t worry. Climbing instruction is tailored to your ability level. All courses are accredited through the American Mountain Guides Association, and group rates are offered. Get some friends together and see how far you can push your vertical limit! Gear and instruction are included.

ON THE TRAILSNARR invites you to stay with us and explore the numerous hiking trails the New River Gorge area has to offer. It’s a great way to enjoy West Virginia’s natural beauty and history while keeping costs to a minimum. Hiking trips include transportation, a specially trained guide, and beautiful views!

HORSEbACk RIDINGEnjoy great trail riding on horseback in the beautiful and scenic New River Gorge with 6,000 acres of riding terrain!

mOuNTAIN bIkINGThere’s no better way to find mud than pedaling a mountain bike...and with more than 35 mapped miles of single-track and mining-era railroad grades crossing the heights and hollows of the New River Gorge, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to go wild! Take the leisurely route and a low-impact spin along the river on the abandoned railroad grade between Thurmond and Cunard. You’ll pass old coke ovens and other remnants of the mining operations that gave the Gorge its first boom. Rentals come with equipment, a trail map, and advice on the best route for your ability and adventure level.
