Three NCHC teams face two-game series with WCHA opponents, while two tangle with Hockey East opponents and one each face Atlantic Hockey and Big Ten foes. Western Michigan takes part in the Ice Breaker Tournament, opening with Big Ten foe and former CCHA rival Ohio State in Toledo and could face a WCHA or AHA foe on Saturday. Miami and Denver combined to go 2-1-0 against the WCHA last weekend. Last season, NCHC teams combined for a 52-25-8 record in regular-season non-conference play, with the .659 win percentage tops among the six Division I men’s hockey conferences. The NCHC has posted the best combined non-conference winning percentage in four of the last five seasons. (page 9) Western Michigan’s participation in the Ice Breaker Tournament marks the sixth straight season an NCHC team (and fifth different team) has played in the season-opening tournament. The Broncos are taking part for the first time in program history. Miami took third place in Erie, Pa. last season, while North Dakota is the lone NCHC team to win the Ice Breaker Tournament, doing so in 2015 in Portland, Maine. Four NCHC teams remain ranked in the top 15 of both national preseason polls, while five NCHC teams are ranked in the USCHO.com Poll and CC is receiving votes. Two-time defending national champion Minnesota Duluth is a near unanimous No. 1 in both polls. With UMD in the top spot, an NCHC team has now been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO. com Poll in 62 of the last 74 weeks dating back to the start of the 2016- 17 season. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (Denver, UMD, North Dakota and St. Cloud State), while the NCHC is home to the last four NCAA National Champions. Denver is No. 2 in both national polls, while SCSU and Western Michigan are also ranked in each. UND is only ranked in the USCHO.com Poll, tying the NCHC for the most ranked teams in the USCHO Poll from one conference. (page 9) The two active NCAA men’s hockey players with the most games played both reside in the NCHC. Denver senior defenseman Michael Davies leads all active NCAA players with 127 career games played, while Minnesota Duluth senior defenseman Nick Wolff has appeared in 123 career games, second among active players. UMD senior goaltender Hunter Shepard has played 81 straight games in goal for UMD, the longest active games played streak by an NCAA netminder. notes continued on page 8 National Collegiate Hockey Conference @TheNCHC | #NCHCHockey /TheNCHC @TheNCHC TheNCHC NCHC.tv

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.
