PREFACE
This NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FRONTIERS IN SPECTROSCOPY (NCOFIS-
2012) has been organized on April 2nd
and 3rd
, 2012 under the joint auspices of the UGC,
Hyderabad in Collaboration with Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore by PG & Research
Department of Chemistry, Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai.
This conference aims to introduce spectroscopy to students and research scholars who
will have a wide spectrum of backgrounds and generate their enthusiasm for a deeper
understanding of spectroscopy. It also brings together scientists working on various aspects of
spectroscopy form all over the country to enable stimulating discussion and exchange of
information.
In this century not only the chemists but also the scientists, in every discipline like
physics, mathematics and informatics are at hand to share the responsibilities. Therefore this
conference will be a platform to cater the above needs and interests of the students and research
scholars of various disciplines.
With the help of the Delegates and Scientists of high caliber who will preside the
conference will give wide knowledge to the students, and research scholars of various
disciplines.
I extend my sincere thank to eminent personalities for their acceptance to deliver the
keynote address to shape this National Conference.
This first National Conference of this magnitude and its proceedings could not have been
possible without the support of UGC.
I hope that the scientific deliberations and discussion of the gathering during a two day
Conference would help to stimulate better scientific understanding and technical innovations for
the growth of polymer research and development.

MESSAGE
I am delighted to know that the Department of Chemistry, Government Arts College,
Tiruvannamalai will host a two day conference on 2nd
and 3rd
April 2012, to explore
groundbreaking discoveries made through the use of spectroscopy. The event features
presentations by four distinguished scientists on how they applied spectroscopy to study the
three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in complex bio-molecules and the motions and
interactions that are important to their functioning.
“Understanding the nature of biomolecular interactions in space and time in atomic detail is
essential to shed light on these communication networks and to design alternatives when they
are compromised by disease. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has evolved
as the premier technique for studying the structure and functionality of these complex bio-
molecules.”
I encourage convenor, organizing committee and various faculty members of this college to
formulate the delegate, a frequent visitor to our Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai
for their various research updates.
I wish each and everyone worked for this great success of the conference.

I am happy to learn that the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, Government
Arts College, Tiruvannamalai is adding another feather to its cap of achievement by
conducting a UGC sponsored National conference on Frontiers in Spectroscopy (NCOFIS-
2012) in collaboration with our department for two days 2nd
and 3rd
April 2012.
Spectroscopy plays a vital role in the discovery of new technologies and materials,
from nanomaterials to more efficient synthesis of pharmaceuticals.
Spectroscopy can be used to discover the energies of electrons within atoms or
molecules. It can help us to find out how the atoms are arranged in the molecule and also
solve the problem of identification of the structure of organic compounds.
I hope that the response will be good and the research temperament of the students
and other participants will get enhanced.
I wish the national conference the grand success.

Spectroscopic Studies on the Charge Transfer Complexes of Drugs with
Biologically Significant Acceptors
Drugs are organic compounds, and as a result, their activity, their solubility in plasma
and their distribution to various tissues is dependent on their physicochemical properties.
Even the interaction of a drug with a receptor or an enzyme is dependent on characteristics of
a drug molecule, such as ionization, electron distribution, polarity and electronegativity. If we
are to understand drug action, we must also understand the physicochemical parameters that
make this action possible. Physicochemical approaches are also being applied increasingly to
the study of drug action. The intent of the application of these approaches is either to
blueprint the information at hand with regard to a given type of drug activity or to provide a
rational guide to the synthesis of new compounds of greater activity. Raman, UV–vis, 1H
NMR, FT-IR, mass and fluorescence spectral techniques were employed to investigate the
mechanism of interaction of drug molecules with biologically significant acceptors such as
quinones and iodine. Equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of these interactions
have been investigated and various physic-chemical parameters related to the charge transfer
interaction have been computed. Such an attempt would definitely shed some on the study of
interaction of drug molecules in real pharmacokinetic study.

include the development of new methods for the aromatics quantification of heavy naphtha

Vishnupriya’s work on Poly phenylene oxides resulted in scientific publications in patents
and articles in journal of new materials, journal of applied polymer science. Reviews of Dr.
Vishnupriya’s work and broader reach articles have appeared in Analyst, Electroanalysis etc.,
Abstract of Keynote Address: Particulate impurities are complex in composition and
technologically challenging to decode. Their appearance and their composition create a
quality performance barrier over time if a careful selection of tools and techniques are not
chosen to decode them. A complete understanding of the chemistry in each step is required;
therefore, characterization of these particle impurities at each step of the process in detail is
carried out. Once decoded, the history of those particles is searched to pin point the right
hypothesis where this could have happened. Then, effective measures are applied to evaluate
a suitable solution. Overall, this helps in enhancing the product appearance and solving
xix NCOFIS-2012
mysterious inline impurities. Thus, spectroscopic tool’s choices can be interpreted not just in
the classical framework of product appeal, but in a holistic approach encompassing esthetics
and technology. As an analytical scientists working in the viscose fiber and textile field we
are charged with extracting the information hidden within the impurities of the product spin
line. This work is not only an indispensable part of quality efforts, but also, as the first step
toward building a material history of a perfect process. Indeed, a necessary and valuable
complement and their correlation to the availability of materials.
