BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College)

Tiruchirappalli was established as a joint venture of the Government of India and the

Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 to produce world-class engineers who will cater

to the growing technological needs of the nation. The institute was granted Deemed

University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Government of India in

2003 and renamed National Institute of Technology (NIT-T). NIT-T has been

declared an institution of national importance by the National Institute of Technology

Act 2007.

Vision

To provide valuable resources for industry and society through excellence in

technical education and research.

Mission

· To offer state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral

programmes.

· To generate new knowledge by engaging in cutting-edge research.

· To undertake collaborative projects with academia and industries.

· To develop human intellectual capability to its fullest potential.

Objectives of the Institute

The aims and objectives of NIT Tiruchirappalli, as assigned by the NIT Council are

· To offer world-class instruction in Science and Engineering.

· To provide state of art facilities for postgraduate study and research.

· To establish teaching and research programmes of an interdisciplinary nature;

· To develop close co-operation with industry.

· To develop strong collaborative links with other Institutions and organizations.

· To improve utilization of available resources.

Administration

The NITs are now fully funded by the Central Government. The move was intended

to provide teaching and research in the branches of engineering, science,

technology and management for the advancement of teaching and research. NIT

Tiruchirappalli is one among them and its basic structure, functions and powers are

briefed in the NIT Act 2007 and NIT Statues 2009.

Academics

Ever since its establishment in April 1964, the institution has registered speedy

progress and offers, at present, ten under graduate and twenty three postgraduate

programmes, M.S.(by research) in all Engineering departments and Ph.D.

programmes in all departments. The Institute has excellent faculty, well equipped

laboratories for advanced research and a modern Central Library.

Over three thousand Undergraduate students, thousand five hundred Postgraduate

students and two hundred Ph.D. Scholars from all over the country make NIT Trichy

a vibrant campus. Admissions to M.Tech., MBA and MCA are based on the scores in

the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), CAT and by NIMCET

examinations. Continuous assessment with Grade Point average based on relative

grading (50% Continuous Assessment and 50% End semester Examination)

ensures healthy competition among students. The institute is an example of cultural

unity with students drawn from most of the states in the country. The faculty strength

is 250 among whom 150 are with Ph.D. qualification.

Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research

Apart from consultancy work undertaken by engineering departments, academic

research and R&D activities register an exponential growth. NIT-T has introduced

M.S. by Research in all engineering departments in order to cater to the needs of

aspiring engineers to pursue their research. Faculty members holding doctoral

degree are offered a seed money to start their research. Research papers have

been published and presented by our faculty members and research scholars in

refereed journals, conferences, seminars and symposia of international and

national repute. Seminars, conferences and symposia are also organized by

various departments of our institute.

Our institute has signed MoUs with industries and institutions in India and abroad to

promote collaborative research and consultancies. An MOU signed with BHEL, our

neighboring industrial campus provides an opportunity for our young researchers

involved in inter- disciplinary and collaborative endeavors. BHEL offers limited

scholarships for research scholars pursuing Ph.D. and M.S. The MOU signed with

Bharadhidasan University, Tiruchirappalli looks forward to collaborative research

activities to be undertaken in both campuses. Another MOU has been signed with

NIMS Japan for the collaborative research in the area of nanotechnology. MoUs with

IBM and HP and other leading software industries have been executed. HP has

offered a Chair position to monitor the ongoing HP projects undertaken by our

students. Apart from the ongoing projects, our faculty members have obtained major

projects funded by DST, CSIR and AICTE.

Library

The college has a modern central library with more than one lakh volumes and

subscriptions to more than 180 periodicals. This collection includes reports, back

volumes, a thousand e-Journals besides a holding of 15,943 bound volumes of

journals. The library also contains 15,000 books in the Book Bank. Besides the

central library, each department has its own library. The open access system is

observed in the library. The Institute holds membership with British Council Library,

Chennai.

OCTAGON (Computer Center)

The hallmark of this campus is the OCTAGON - Computer Center. This center

serves the campus-wide LAN in close association with the user departments. This

LAN caters to 1500 users across the campus at the same time and has a 10 Gbps

fiber optic backbone. It also acts as a resource centre to supplement classroom

5

Page 8: NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY• To anticipate, plan and prepare the technological needs for India. • To improve utilization of available resources. Administration The NIT s are

instructions with laboratory sessions. The OCTAGON accommodates the central

computing facilities; it has a server room with 25 high-end servers and 200 high-end

computers; its laboratories include four labs; a Printer room equipped with high-

speed A3 and A4 network Laser Printers (color and mono); a Library for software,

CBTs and manuals; Conference and Seminar facilities, a CAD/CAM Centre with 22

high-end workstations and an in-house maintenance facility. The centre is

maintained by the Computer Support Group (CSG). Octagon is kept open 24 hours

a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year. It has centralized 2 x 60 kVA redundant

Uninterrupted Power Supply with 200 kVA standby Power Generators and Central

Air Conditioning.

A new Annex building with an additional capacity of 198 computers has come up

next to Octagon to meet the additional requirements. The Annex building has two

labs, each with 99 computers. One of the labs is connected to the Internet via 40

Mbps (1:1) leased line from Software Technology Park of India (STPI) and the other

is a general lab used for programming and CAD.

Operating Systems available are:

 Windows Server 2008 / 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition

Windows XP Prof. / Windows Vista Enterprise

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 5

 Fedora 11 & 10

 SUN Solaris 10

The salient features of campus wide Backbone Network are as follows:

 10 Gbps Fiber Optic Backbone

 Gigabit Routing Switch

1/10 Gbps Managed Switches at Departments

 UTP CAT 6 Structured Cabling

There are about 75 switches, which include Extreme, Cisco, Planet, and 3Com

products, located in 34 different buildings with features like Layer 3

Student Life

The spirit of being in NITT is the freedom one gets, to explore life, without

compulsions, without any crushing force from academic pressures. Generally, the

NITTians pursue one or more skills, join clubs and groups to work for extra cultural

activities.

The best part about NIT Trichy is that the intake of students is from all over India. As

most of the students stay in the hostels, it gives them a chance to develop an attitude

towards teamwork.

Extracurricular activities include participation in NCC, NSS, literary clubs, trekking

clubs, photographic clubs and students' chapters of Professional societies. A

modern gymnasium and other sports facilities are also available on the campus.

The Alumni of this institution have excelled in various spheres and are globally

placed. RECAL, the alumni association of NITT takes part actively in Institute

development.

NIT-T hosts two inter-collegiate festivals namely Festember (Cultural) and Pragyan

(Technical). It also hosts an inter-departmental festival namely, NITTFEST

(Cultural). These festivals find huge student participation from all over the country.

The institute has a total campus area of 800 acres. The major student amenities are

Hostels, Hospital, Post Office, Fully computerized State Bank of India (with ATM),

Stationery stores, Canteens, Cafeterias, Swimming pool and Shopping centre.
