The Stedrmn House, built in 1857 and enlarged in 1898, is a two-story structure of brick laid in common bond. Basically Italianate in style, it has an L-shaped front and two-story rear ell. The house stands on a large lot that was originally part of a fanm. It rests on a rmsonry foundation and has the low pitched, hipped roof typical of the Italianate style. The Stedrmn House's Italianate character is also shown in the brick, segmental-arch window caps. Porches accentuate portions of the north and west sides while the east and west facades are punctuated by bay windows. Originally the home had no eastern ell, but this was added in 1898 by attorney Philip Padgham, who purchased the house from the Stedmans. Though more recent altera-tions such as the garage and enclosed north porch have occurred, the Stedrmn House retains its original Ita 1 ian ate appearance.
Significance Period: 1850-1900 Areas of Significance: architecture Date of Construction: 1875 Builder/architect: unknown
Built in 1857, the Stedrmn House is significant as an example of Italianate architecture done in brick. It is also of importance as the home of local attorney and circuit court judge Philip Padgham. The Stedrmn House, located on part of a 320-acre tract originally bought by James Lowe in 1834, is a fine example of the Ita 1 i an ate sty 1 e executed in brick. First owned by Sarah LONe Stedrmn, the home was en 1 arged in 1898 when Philip Padgham purchased it. The additions do not detract from the home's appearance as they were Italianate in design.
