1) Listen to professional recordings of each excerpt. Excerpts #1 and #5 can be found at http://www.trumpetexcerpts.org It is very easy to use.

2) Practice with a metronome 3) Try to bring what is unique about each excerpt to the fore-front—for example

#1; pacing, fanfare bravura, intonation #2; beautiful sound and phrasing, lyricism (probably no recording) #3; good sense of pulse, strong rhythm, accuracy (band excerpt) #4; correct rhythm and a strong pulse, correct key throughout #5; create a strong mood of “funeral music”, effective use of dynamics— strong forte when indicated, good sense of time

4) Strongly recommended practice tools include:
