Can Picafort, having waited some thirty years for legal wrangles to be sorted out, was finally able to establish its own “club náutico”. This weekend, the resort is celebrating the opening of the club last year with its first Nautical Sports Fair. The main events are on Saturday and Sunday (24-25 May), the nautical theme, rather like Puerto Alcúdia’s April boat show, will combine with a calamari gastronomy one. There is an awful lot going on, with exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations, see a summary of some of the key events on page 2.

The Sa Bassa museum of the Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation held an open day last Sunday; it was part of the International Museum Day. Ben Jakober will be at the Pollensa Museum today (Thursday) for an evening of conversation, starting at 8pm. Jakober is arguably best known locally for having been responsible for the intriguing sculpture on Alcúdia’s Magic Roundabout - “Leonardo’s Knot”.

N2 ProductionsN2 Productions’ latest show, ‘Teatro & Tapas’ was a fusion of sketches, song and dance. A bit more intimate than previous performances, the audience comprised invited guests, family and friends. Complete with a Fat Cat Jazz Band, there were red clothed candlelit tables and tapas, just like a private club.

The idea came from the children themselves. When asked, all wanted to do something different. So after some initial workshops it was decided a Variety Show would fit the bill. The sketches were chosen for and by the children, adapting stories such as Matilda, Horrid Henry, classic pieces from Alice in Wonderland, The Two Ronnies and even Shakespeare. Original comedy and drama was written and they had their own stand up comedian. There was music from Chess, The Sound of Music, dancing from Charlie Chaplin and our very own Diversity-style dance choreographed by Susie O’Driscall. The incredible set was created by Kirsty Duffield, lighting by Lazaro and Mark, prompting from Geraldine Williams.

Nickie Liles told TOTN, “As the children grow up in a different country, and therefore don’t get to really know about British playwrights,

famous authors, comedy, singers and performers we’ve grown up with, we’ve had the chance introduce them to much of our culture and history and they not only rose to the challenge but really enjoyed it.”

For the two Nickies it’s not just about the end result of a show, it’s also about teaching life skills; “They gain so much confidence in joining a group, they broaden their horizons in their own language which in turn gives them ability to deal with life outside and gives them a sense of belonging.”

Another aim of N2, is to put back into the community. Proceeds from the show, in collaboration with the Rotary Club, will help in providing food to those less fortunate. If you have a child that might be interested in joining the group they will be starting again in the Autumn. Contact [email protected], [email protected] or call 680 887 728.

English Radio PollensaPollensa Radio covers guest related issues and important events in the town. Regular contributors appear to talk about various topics and during larger fiestas and fira, DJs report live from the event. If your Catalan is not up to scratch, English Radio Pollensa, is broadcast every weekend. Led by Charles Nutter, the first show is on Saturday afternoons 1-4pm followed by Sunday mornings 10am-1pm. Joined in the

studio by regulars and special guests, Charles and the team bring some English flavour to the local radio. The station is currently undergoing a major makeover and will be moving studios. Once

the new state-of-the-art station is established, Charles will be back on air on Saturday 31st May. Tune in on 107.9fm or listen online at www.englishradiomallorca.com.

A Week of Firsts for St. Andrew’s Church Bishop Michael Colclough, stepped in as the church’s Locum for a week in May. On the first Sunday he officiated at the Anglican Church in Palma, and led some of both congregations in a retreat at Lluc, St. Andrew’s first retreat led by a Bishop.

The second Sunday Bishop Colclough officiated the Sunday Service, which included

the 1st Baptism in the new Church building. Frankie, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hooper Rosewarne, was very well behaved and seemed quite taken with the Bishops ‘hat’ and her own baptism candle.

The following Thursday at 12.30pm St. Andrew’s held its first midweek service in the new building. This was officiated by ‘resident locum’ Rev Chris Watkins, who had just returned from Wales to begin another 5 week stay with the church. This midweek service will become a regular event on the Church’s calendar and all are welcome.

Nautical Sports Fair in Can PicafortSaturday and Sunday from 10am to 1pm, an introduction to SUP (Stand Up Paddle) and windsurfing on the beach by the Plaça Cervantes (which is where the tourist information office is located). There are also introductions to SNUBA (the combination of snorkelling and scuba) between 10am and 1pm on Saturday at the Mar y Paz hotel pool and to kitesurfing between 12 midday and 2pm and 3pm and 5pm on the Cervantes beach.

The calamari gastronomy tent on the Plaça Cervantes will open at 11am on both days and there will be special servings of tapas at 8.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Further gastronomy will be on display in the form of some show cooking by Michelin-starred chef Tomeu Caldentey at 7.30pm on Saturday.

Other events include an open waters 500 metres swim at 12 midday on Saturday and an exhibition of underwater photography at the Club Náutico from 7pm on Saturday, while on Sunday there will be ball de bot folk dance at 11am, a regatta from 12 midday and a fashion show organised by the Ones store, also at 12 midday.

Because the Champions League final between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid takes place on Saturday evening, there will be a giant screen in the Cervantes square to show the match. Depending on what time the match finishes, this will be followed by a “havanares” performance of Cuban sea shanties by the group Sotavent.

No buoys at Punta AvançadaVictory for boat owners. It is reassuring to at last discover that the regional government takes note of public discontent, which was demonstrated in the form of the protest flotilla at the end of June last year. The target of the protest was the installation of mooring buoys at Punta Avançada on the Formentor promontory or, more precisely, the charges for mooring. The environment ministry now says that the buoys will not be installed this summer, it already having backtracked somewhat, thanks to the strength of feeling that was shown last year. The minister, Gabriel Company, appeared to accept that the original charges were too high, but lowering them did not appease those who have been used to anchoring at Punta Avançada for free and to enjoying picnics. The matter was taken to the Balearics High Court. It ruled that buoys and charges could only be applied in exceptional cases, and it dismissed the idea that Punta Avançada was exceptional. The government had sought to justify the buoys on environmental grounds, i.e. that they would help to protect posidonia sea grass, but there is little evidence of sea grass in that area.

Debt-Free MuroThere are only two councils in Majorca which are carrying no debt. One is Ariany, the other is Muro. Its mayor, Martí Fornes, attributes this to simple and good housekeeping. The most indebted town hall in the area is Sa Pobla. It is in the red to the tune of more than ten million euros. The debts at Alcúdia, Pollensa and Santa

Margalida are roughly similar - near or over four million euros - though one wonders if, in the case of Alcúdia for example, the sizable budget surplus that it has might lead to the debt being eroded completely. Muro did have a debt of around two million euros not so long ago, but prudence has seen it be whittled away to nothing. Its debt was not as large as other town halls, and they, it should be noted, have taken measures to substantially reduce their debts, even if Sa Pobla remains worryingly debt-ridden.

Beach massages go legitThis summer there will be authorised massage tents on the beaches in Playa de Muro and Can Picafort. Muro and Santa Margalida have both opted to follow the lead of Calvia in putting out to tender beach massage facilities in an attempt to eradicate the illegal, nuisance-factor massage trade. At a charge of 2,000 euros per tent for the summer, it would seem unlikely that the “massage girls” will be in the bidding, so whether this initiative has the desired effect will have to be seen. The hope is, though, that demand for massage will shift to the authorised massage points, thus depriving the illegal trade of its business. Muro, in the meantime, is upping security on the beach by having safes installed with sunbed and umbrella units.

Music bands festivalOn Sunday, 1 June, there will be an evening festival of bands of music at the Alcúdia Auditorium. Entrance is by invitation from the Auditorium. The bands featured are Alcúdia’s

municipal band and the Filharmònica Porrerenca (Porreres).

Santa Margalida invests in ancient tombThe town hall in Santa Margalida is to spend around 100,000 euros on improving the site of the ancient dolmen burial site in Son Bauló. The dolmen is in fact located on the industrial estate and is not currently shielded from the backdrop of warehouses. So the plan is to hedge it in and to install information panels explaining the significance of the site. The dolmen may date from around 1700BC, though there is a suggestion that it is much older, perhaps as old as 4000BC. There is evidence of human occupation of Mallorca from before that date, though it almost certainly wasn’t permanent. The first permanent settlement is believed to have occurred during the third Millennium before Christ.

Albufera information centre remains closedThe Can Bateman information centre in the Albufera natural park has been closed for several months and it is going to stay closed. The regional government environment ministry says that it requires improvements for which there isn’t currently a budget. The centre was renovated in 2006 at a cost of 230,000 euros. Its being closed is an unfortunate example of how considerable sums were spent on facilities for wildlife and nature but which are now unreliable in terms of their being open and so doing what the investments were supposedly for, i.e. informing. The centre in La Gola in Puerto Pollensa is another case in point.

Ponderosa

Ponderosa makes hanging out on the beach a stylish affair. Playa del Muro is a beautiful beach anyway, what with its shallow turquoise water and stretch of white sand, so with this beach bar-restaurant all chilled out and Balearic Chic, the schlep to Muro is well worth the trip.

This is an über cool place with trendy staff but that’s not to say there is no substance. The service is friendly and personal, the food authentic and fresh. The menu is varied with signature dishes, including the paella.

The terrace is actually on the beach so you can enjoy lunch barefoot, while the children play in the sand

between meals. The menu is based on the 0km slow food concept, meaning Chef Javier Sol buys only the highest quality and from producers as close as possible. This ethical approach extends from the organic produce to an overall environmental awareness.

In existence for nearly 50 years in various forms, today’s Ponderosa is a superb choice for an all-dayer. Indeed, food is served all day and the cocktails with DJ sounds as the sun goes down make Ponderosa a perfect night out as well.

Ponderosa’s irresistable charm is in its situ, décor, menu and ambiance.

Avarca Crazy Spanish Lesson The Phone

Making that phone call in Spanish can be daunting. Phone calls are particularly tricky because we miss the body language, but it can be done. First of all, whenever you don’t understand something just say: Perdón, puede hablar más despacio, por favor? No lo entiendo! Sorry, could you speak slowlier, please? I don’t understand!

Here are the basics for your phone call: Hola. ¿Podría hablar con______? Hello. Please could I speak to ______? ¿De parte de quién? (Who’s calling/talking?) Soy ______, soy la madre de/ la mujer de/ el padre de/ el marido de______. (It’s ______,______’s mum/wife/dad/husband) No está en este momento. (He’s not in the office right now) ¿Quiere dejar un mensaje? (Can I take a message) ¿Puede volver a llamar en diez, quince, veinte minutos/ en media hora? (Can you call back in 10/15/20 minutes/half an hour?) Puede decirle que volveré a llamar en diez, quince, veinte minutos/ en media hora? (Can you tell him/her, I will call back in 10/15/20 minutes/half an hour?)

Calling the school: Hola, soy la madre de ______. Hoy no va a ir a la escuela porque está enfermo. Hello. I’m ___ mother, ___ isn’t very well and won’t be at school today. De acuerdo, gracias por avisar. Ok, thank you for letting us know. Que se mejore pronto. Hope he/she gets better soon.

Calling the doctor: Hola. ¿Me puede dar cita con el médico para mi hijo/a que se encuentra mal, por favor? Can I make an appointment for my daughter/son who is not feeling well, please? ¿A qué hora le iría bien? What time could you come? Cuanto antes, por favor! As soon as possible, please ¿A las Doce cuarenta y cinco, le va bien? Is 12:45 a good time for you? Si gracias! Yes, thank you!

It’s almost the end of the school year, so I’m entering the planning stages of the kid’s birthday parties. In August.

This is no case of obsessive organization skill, having two children with birthdays in the same month, a month during the summer holidays no less, has taught me a lesson: you have to get in there early or there will be no guests at the party. Which is enough to make any mum cry, let alone a 6 year old This year, I’m looking at small boy requests of an “Alien and Space Sea Monsters Maze Party”, and an “Insect Ninja Creatures Party”. Getting these parties nailed within two weeks of each other, under the dark cloud of the Pinterest-crazy Supermum, whose own son’s birthday extravaganza

is a couple of weeks before mine, results in the kind of exhaustion normally associated with a traumatic life event. I end up so birthdayed out that the last thing I want to do is celebrate my own a couple of weeks later. I daydream about my 50th birthday, after I’m over the shock of one day turning fifty, where my grown up and wonderful sons throw me a surprise party and hold long and emotional speeches about their amazing mum and the parties she threw for them as kids. Because that will surely happen, right?

Menorcan shoes are everywhere in the Balearics. The ultimate shoe of choice, these comfy but cool shoes have a history. Called the ‘Avarca’ shoe, they began in Menorca where the terrain is steep and rocky. Working the fields gathering crops, the farmers had to wear footwear that was strong yet flexible. It’s not 100% sure when they first appeared but there is evidence of the shoe dating back to 200AD. Originally made completely with leather, rubber tyre soles were introduced in the beginning of the 20th century. The rubber was recycled from worn out car tyres. With limited quantities of this kind of rubber and the fact that it was so hard wearing for the humid climate, these shoes became highly prized.

The Avarca Rustica, with its leather upper, split insole and rubber soles all stitched together with a thick, waxed thread, has remained pretty much the same. Originally sewn by hand, the Avarca was basically made for private use. Soon some country folk began to make a limited supply, commercializing the shoe. And so the story began. The show grew into the most popular summer footwear and by the 1960s Menorcans would visit the factory every summer to order their Avarcas. That has grown into an international market and the shoe is distributed around the world in many styles and colours. V’Estim in Pollensa old town carries the shoe in a multitude of colours and styles. They stock one of the original manufacturers, S’Avam so you know you are getting the real thing. Prices are around €35. www.facebook.com/Vestim

Green Wonderland 8k run

We begin this scenic route in Pollensa old town by the Torrent de la Vall del Marc and run 1.5km approx. along country lanes in the direction of Llenaire, Puerto Pollensa, to a wonderful little off-road circuit through mountain woodland. The entrance to this route is sign-posted ‘El Puig de Santuiri’ displaying a map of the area, though

beware, as it has been put in the wrong place! According to the map, you can ascend to the summit almost straight away, but in fact, the pathway leading up to it is further along the route (read on). An undulating jog over earth, rocks, steps and paving stones keeps us on our toes and we enjoy the shade of the towering pines along the way. During this peaceful and pretty run, we catch glimpses of the nearby Puig de Maria and of lovely Pollensa town. Halfway along the route, there is a picnic area with wooden tables and chairs. It is here where we climb a kilometre or so to a viewpoint where the views over Pollensa and to the mountains and sea beyond are stunning. We then descend to finish the 3km circuit of the wood. Covering 8km approximately in total with the run to and from Pollensa, this is one of our shorter runs and is a nice little workout, especially for the lower legs.Runnyknows is a friendly team of experienced runners offering guided runs in and around Puerto Pollensa. 1.

A long time in the planning, our adventure was to try and circumnavigate Mallorca by paddleboard. My expedition buddy, Cody White (an American paddleboard racer) and I both knew we would have to travel extremely light—just one change of clothes and paddling kit, which coined the phrase “How short is your toothbrush?” Scheming from both sides of the Atlantic, our plan seemed foolproof: paddle around Mallorca, wild camping along the coastline. December was the window of opportunity.

We arrived excited at the prospect of warmer weather to find the worst storms in 10 years. After wandering around Palma, inflatable Naish One Paddle Boards in hand, we headed anti-clockwise to pick up the following breeze towards the Southern Cape. It was cold especially travelling light and, as we approached Colonia de Sant Jordi, it started to increase to 30 knot winds and 2.5 metre swell. We were like huge sails being pushed in the wrong direction. We both agreed to tweak our original

plan, we were now Exploring Mallorca by SUP. We rounded the Cape at Cabo Salinas aware of the jagged rocks and pushed Northwards into heavy wind and swell, literally on our knees. We reached Porto Colom and conceded, there was no fun to be had fighting the elements. We did the obvious thing and tossed a coin for heading North or West. North won and with the kindly assistance of a local friend, Jaume, we headed to Cap de Formentor to explore. The

last few days were incredible with stunning caves offering a kaleidoscope of colours. Ultimately our original goal to circumnavigate the island in the time was simply not possible, the weather put paid to that. But it did remind us that just exploring for the sake of exploring is so much better. Hopefully we will get to come back at some point.

Ask Aunty Marga ...Dear Aunty Marga,

The season is starting which means all our friends want to stay. Again. We would like to have the house to ourselves for at least a couple of weeks but how can I tell them

without offending them?? Kerry, Pollensa

Oh dear, it is a price we pay for living in paradise. But if you insist on keeping your house to yourselves, why not suggest alternative options? The refuges are cheap and a wonderful way to see the North. There is also MallorcaSpareRooms.com and other websites for such things. You could just lie and tell them there is a double booking that week, have a

friend pose as your “guest”. There are ways around everything, cariño, but this should be reserved for peripheral friends who are just after a free holiday. Don’t go upsetting your mum.

Badminton is a sport that everyone can play. Much slower than squash, easier than tennis, it is very accessible. Once started and the basics have been mastered, badminton can be stepped up to a quick, high-energy racket game. Not a huge sport in Mallorca, it has nonetheless grown with just 6–7 players in 2006 to more than 225 children playing in school tournaments this year. Not to be left out, Pollensa has its own badminton club that means twice a week at the Pollensa Sports Centre.

It began in 2009 when a few players would play once a week. Just one year later the club was officially formed. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30-10 and has 25

members. They hold regular tournaments with other teams across the island and occasional coaching from the professional player in Palma. On 31st May, the club holds its annual tournament when trophies are awarded to winners in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Anyone is welcome to join and pick up the game. The Mallorquinista QUICKSAND

Real Mallorca are sinking into the quicksand of relegation to the Segunda B League, inexorably, painfully and virtually without so much as a whimper. The club is now hovering outside the relegation zone on goal difference only. This weekend they play Girona away from home. The Catalonian side are 2 points behind the islanders so defeat there would see Mallorca slip into the bottom four of the league. Recent results offer not even a glimmer of hope. A visit to fellow strugglers Numancia could have seen the team leapfrog their hosts and into a more comfortable position. Alfaro showed a rare glimpse of his talent by volleying Mallorca into a first half lead. The nemesis of abysmal defending was revisited with just eighteen minutes left when a blunder of comical proportions by goalkeeper Mino gifted home striker Regalon an equalizer. The situation was still not quite critical with a home fixture against Real Jaen, again just above Mallorca in the table, but a totally uninspiring nil-nil draw was a meagre return. Scheduled to kick off at exactly the same time as the deciding match of the season between Barcelona and Athletico meant the match was set against a surreal backdrop of just 5,000 spectators. An appeal to the powers that be for a later kick-off fell on deaf ears. While bars throughout the island were jam-packed for the showdown on TV, it was a completely different story at the Son Moix Stadium. The crew in the OB Van were watching events in Barcelona with just a small monitor showing the actual game they were working on, sadly, they had the right idea. The match was soporific and virtually incident free. Midfielder Iriney had the islanders first shot on goal after 33 minutes! An impartial observer at the game remarked that the team had no fire in their bellies either before half time, or after when they should have had a monumental rollicking from coach Lluis Carreras. It

had the feel of a training ground match with both sides content to sit back and settle for a draw. Mallorca’s only creative player Marco Asensio did his best to introduce some spark into the proceedings. As an 18-year-old prodigy he must be wondering

why senior professionals were not trying their hearts out. Young substitute Alex Moreno also did his best but

with just 15 seconds of injury time left he missed the proverbial sitter. It was the only decent opportunity created by Mallorca and sums up the club’s plight. It almost seems as though the players have no pride in their work, and are happy in the knowledge that other clubs will take them on next season. Unless there is a radical change of attitude in the remaining three games then

Mallorca will sink into the quicksand of a regional league. Administration and even a complete

winding up of the club would almost inevitably follow. A home game against Las Palmas and a visit to Cordoba

for the last game of the season, and possibly Real Mallorca’s last game ever simply appear to be the final nails in the coffin. Quite frankly the club’s youth team would offer more fight than the overpaid, professionals currently in the first team. The club’s few remaining loyal supporters are hoping for a miracle and may well need one.

STOP PRESS As we go to print news is out that Lluís Carreras has been sacked as coach of Mallorca FC. Toni Prats has resigned as athletic director. Lluís Carreras, who was dismissed today in front of the first team will be replaced by Javier Olaizola ex Real Mallorca Captain and B-Team Coach. He will be joined by Pep Alomar. Perhaps this is the miracle we’ve been waiting for. Watch this space.
