When the programme starts

Activity residential

In their first week, your son/daughter goes away for five days with their group for an outdoor adventure experience. They will take part in a range of challenges and adrenaline fuelled activities. These activities are designed to take them out of their comfort zone so that they can build confidence and develop essential employability skills, such as teamwork, decision making, and leadership.

Social action project

Finally, your son/daughter will put all these skills into practice by designing a social action project with their team. The project will then be delivered over 30 hours and will make a real mark on their local community. The experience gained from this stage of the programme will really help their CV, UCAS or college application stand out.

When your son/daughter delivers their social action project it will not always be supervised by NCS staff. This is to help them to be responsible and practice the skills they have learnt in the previous weeks.

Graduation & Celebration Event

This is a chance for you to come along and find out what NCS has all been about! Celebrate your son’s/daughter’s achievements at their graduation ceremony and see how they can continue their journey with NCS. This year’s ceremony will be taking place on Saturday 8 October at The Rheged Centre near Penrith.

Building skills

During the following week, your son/daughter will be reunited with their team mates for a further five days away from home. Throughout this time, they will develop important life skills, find their independence, and get to know their community better.

NCS takes place at different locations throughout Cumbria and also in Wales. Locations may include:

Week one:

Outward Bound Centres at Aberdovey, Howtown, or Ullswater

Patterdale Hall, Glenridding

YMCA Lakeside, Newby Bridge

Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project at Ennerdale Scouts

Week two:

University of Cumbria at Fusehill Street, Carlisle, Ambleside and Lancaster

Brewery Halls, Carlisle

Denton House, Keswick,

Isthmus Cottage, Keswick

Coniston Holly How YHA

Arnside Independent Hostel

Male and female sleeping and bathroom arrangements are always separate.

We aim to cater for all religious and cultural beliefs. Please notify the local Area Coordinator in advance if your teen has any specific requirements or needs.

We will make every effort, where possible, to ensure young people with additional needs can take part in this incredible programme.

Meals

A packed lunch will be required for the first day of week one and week two, otherwise meals will be provided whilst on residential. We aim to give your son/daughter a varied and balanced diet throughout the day. During the other weeks, the local Area Coordinator will inform your son/daughter of meal arrangements.

ACCOMMODATION

Safety

All staff who have contact with young people have an Enhanced DBS check.

All of our activities and venues have suitable risk assessments and policies in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of young people on NCS. These policies include safeguarding, anti-bullying, and health and safety.

Where young people are taking part in adventurous activities, we use accredited and checked centres with specially trained staff.

SAFETY AND WELFAREWelfare

Groups will be split in to 12 young people, giving everyone the opportunity to make new friends. During the evenings and other downtime, your teen is free to socialise with other teams.

The NCS experience is about trying new things. There are a range of challenging, new, and rewarding activities. Staff will work with anyone who is reluctant to give something a try but no one will be forced to do anything they don’t want to do.

If there is an emergency or issue, the Area Coordinator will be in contact, so it is important we have all your current emergency contact details.

Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited on the programme. Any young person found to be in possession of these will be asked to leave the programme, and appropriate action will be taken.
