"MY PATH TO FEARLESS QUILTING"

Dora Cary is a Romanian-born engineer and designer who discovered

quilting in the US in 2006. It was love at first sight! Since 2013 she has

been creating well-written quilt patterns for fresh contemporary- looking

quilts! Dora's lecture is fun and informative, covering the unusual path

she took from growing up in communist Romania to having a successful

quilting business in the country of her

dreams. Read more about Dora’s

Hello RCQG Members –

As I write this, I’m getting ready to drive the U-Haul truck over to the Guild’s storage facility, so I and a team

of volunteers can unload the Quilt Festival equipment.

What a great show! The quilts were stunning! The vendors were great, they were happy with our new venue.

The guests I spoke to were all quick to say that the new location was great and that the quilts were displayed

beautifully. Congratulations to Guild member Cathy Brorby, who won Best of Show for both traditional and art

quilt!

Most of all, a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who made the show happen. It all came together wonder-

fully. Kudos to Korey Chase and his team! Now, the planning begins for next year’s Festival!

Moving on to other Guild matters, we still need someone to step up and agree to be President Elect for 2021.

You will have an able teacher in Kris Kerr, who will be president next year in 2020. Please contact Loretta

Lowe, Parliamentarian, if you are interested.

Thanks for all you do for our Guild

As I write this everyone is frantically getting ready for the Quilt & Fabric Art Festival. I hope everyone enjoyed

the new venue and had a great time. I know that Community Service had a good display and hope you all got

to see it. There were lots of vendors and lots of good prizes to be had.

Thank you to everyone that volunteered and I know everyone worked very hard.

We are looking forward to seeing all the nice quilts and seeing who won the big prizes and ribbons.

We are also looking forward to getting back to work (and a good time) at Community Service in October.

Please join us for a day of fun and friendship as we stitch together whimsical bears for children with rare dis-

eases. We meet at Meissner's Sewing, 2417 Cormorant Way, Sacramento on the second Friday of every month

from 10-3. Bring your lunch, your machine and normal sewing notions as you would for any class, and we sup-

ply the pattern and all the fabrics (which have all been donated to our group), This group was started by the

founder of Rare Science which does research into rare diseases in children and is a growing concern all over

the world. Let's help ease the way for these children and have some fun along the way. Please sign up online

at Meissner's in Sacramento or call them (916-920-2121.) If not enough (3) sign up for the class, they will

cancel. Please sign up at least a week ahead. If Meissner's is having an event and cannot accommodate us, we

will still meet at Pat Weissensee's studio. If they are not available you will not be able to sign up online. They

have graciously donated space for us to sew for the day each month. To get the tags and feet for the bears, go

to http://www.rarescience.org/rare-bear-program/rare-bear-army-signup/kits/ Please contact me if you have

any questions.

We really need help to make kits! It is there, but I only have one regular person and the two of us just cannot

do it all. We only have a few quilts now, so will probably not be making a donation in November. Guild mem-

bers can pick up kits to piece and quilt at the Guild meetings. I need more bodies to make kits and sandwich

quilts for the next meeting. Quilts should be at least 40" X 60". We meet in my studio the 2nd Wednesday of

every month 10-3 (bring a lunch.) Contact me for details.

Planning has begun for the 2020 Quilt Auction! As always, funds from the Quilt Auction benefit Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento’s breast cancer programs and services. The Quilt Auction will take place on Saturday, No-vember 7, 2020 at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. The quilt display and silent auction will open October

1, 2020.

The quilt auction supports breast cancer programs like the breast navigator program. A cancer navigator supplies guidance and resources to help make the road from diagnosis to survivorship easier to navigate. Help us support these important cancer programs and services by supporting the 2020 Quilt Auction.

Quilt collection begins November 1, 2019 and will continue through September 1, 2020. As in the past, quilts may be of any size color or style. We ask that they be new, quilted (not tied) and have a 4’’ hanging sleeve sewn to the back. Meissner’s Sewing Machine Company & Learning Centers in Sacramento has generously donated a safe, clean and air-conditioned space for us to store the quilts.

Committee members will visit guilds, quilt shows and quilting related groups throughout the area. Help us spread the word by forwarding this email to friends who might be interested in making a quilt or volunteering on auction day.

The Guild received this message via our website. If you are interested in taking on this project, please con-

tact Mr. Bakes directly.

Greetings. I am a Carmichael resident. My grandmother hand-stitched many dresses for my toddler sister (born 1965). Grandma is gone, but all of those lovely dresses remain. I was hoping to commis-sion an expert quilter to make those dresses into two separate quilts - one for my sister and one for my sister's daughter. Can you guide me to anyone who may like such a project? I am happy to com-pensation, of course. I received your group's name from Lori Hemmingsen-Souza, a quilter in her own right, but unavailable for this project. Thank you! (Cell phone: 415-722-7456; office phone: 916-646-8275.) Christopher Bakes, [email protected]

The Library will be NOT BE OPEN at the October meeting. Enjoy your books for another month and return them in November. Thanks.

OUR QUILTERS ARE THE BEST!

Jan Soules has had two quilts recently selected for SAQA traveling shows. Her quilt, “Pink Coneflowers”

is part of the Stitching California exhibit which opened in August at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah.

Also, her quilt “Take Off “was selected as part of the Aloft exhibit. Both quilts will travel for up to three

years.

In the recently held Wisconsin Quilt Expo, Jan’s quilt “Loving Amsterdam” won third place in the Pictorial

wall category. It is based on her travels to Amsterdam. It will be on display at PIQF. She has had two

quilts juried into the Houston Quilt Festival and plans on traveling to see the show again this year.

Linda Bergmann won Best of Show at the Elk Grove Quilt show.

Jan Milner is glad to share that her quilt, “Well, Hello Mae,” was accepted for judging into PIQF in the

“Quilty Pleasures” category. If you’re at the show, check it out!

Phyllis Hipps finished her first quilt and proudly showed it at the September guild meeting. Her speech

(editor’s note: not sure who Phyllis is referring to although I agree with the sentiment) meant so much to

me - she touched my heart. She sincerely and honestly confirmed something worthy for all of us to re-

member – that quilters are unique, special and supportive loving individuals.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

Judy Scollay’s family did an extended generation camping trip up in the Redwoods. They had a great

time with two of three kids and all the grandkids. Lots of hikes and stops at quilt shops in Eureka. At the

first shop Judy took a deep breath when the total rang up on the register (at least she didn’t pass out!).

The shopkeeper said don’t worry, they are just souvenirs! That made it easy for next three shops!!

In July, Mary Wilkinson visited a GREAT quilt shop in Skagway, Alaska. The shop is taking applications

for people to work during the summer tourist season 2020. It would be a fun adventure for someone.

In August, Diana Muenzler went to a quilt retreat at the Mercantile Hotel in McCloud. The retreat was

organized by Rita Traxler and it was a great retreat! The weather was amazing and so was Mt. Shasta.

Diana took dozens of pictures of Mt. Shasta. The hotel rooms were all really unique, each one was differ-

ent and the food was excellent! In addition, Diana finished two quilts for the show. Book it Dano!

Carol Smith took a road trip in August with her sister, Joanie, to Billings, Montana. On the way they

stopped at the largest quilt shop in Idaho, The Gathering Place. It was so overwhelming she didn’t buy a

single thing!

FAMILY AND HEALTH…

Valerie Wong had hip replacement surgery on September 16th and is doing fine…getting old is not for

sissies, that’s for sure.

Ann Wright recently returned from a Colorado vacation where she met her cousin’s granddaughter.

They thanked her for their baby quilts which they will use as “bed toppers”-it’s very nice to see the quilts

loved and appreciated.

Helen Zinn’s youngest grandson (a junior at Seattle University), is studying this quarter in Beijing, Chi-

na. His major is social work with a minor in Chinese. He spent two weeks touring the Silk Road. He’ll be

home in mid-December.

THE EVER POPULAR MISCELLANEOUS…

Kim Brownell designed Swifty Stitches block of the month for 2020. When Susan, the owner, was visit-

ing spring quilt market she showed it to a Canadian fabric company (Cantik Cottons and Batiks). They

liked it and wanted to have it as a block of the month also. So Kim made them a sample quilt out of their

batiks. They loved it so much they asked if they could take it to Houston quilt market in October and take

orders for the patterns. Sooo…her quilt and patterns are going to Houston in October 2019!

Jonell Carter is back. She will be hosting 2020 retreats. She will still be doing the Mercy Auburn Retreat

-Memorial Day weekend, but also in the works is a possible second Mercy Retreat in August. If you enjoy

getting together with friends be sure to check out the 2020 retreats!

Kellie Willey had the pleasure of entertaining two lovely British ladies from Manchester, England. They

went around and visited five quilt shops and Kellie introduced them to her friends. The ladies enjoyed

meeting real Americans and shortened their Tahoe stay to come back to Sacramento for more visiting.

There was lots of quilt talk and Kellie learned British slang.

Well, the show is behind us, no burning the midnight oil getting those bindings done, so now is the per-

fect time to start those quilts for next year’s Festival.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
