Chester Branch by Edge Moor Bridge Works for the Central Division of Philadelphia Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Company.
• 915 feet long and 100 feet high.• SEPTA acquired ownership from
Conrail in 1983.• 25 year life extension project
performed in 1983. • Currently serves SEPTA’s Media/Elwyn
Regional Rail Line. • Carries more than 320 passenger
trains a week.• Locally known as “The Trestle”.

Media/Elwyn Line Viaduct Work

Stage 1: Temporary access roads constructed. New footings, piers and abutments installed. SEPTA service on the Media/Elwyn Line uninterrupted.
Stage 2: New girders, deck, catenary towers installed and new track placed. During this stage, the Media‐Elwyn line west of Swarthmore Station will be taken out of service. Busing provided to stations between Swarthmore and Elwyn.
Stage 3: Rail service will resume along the Media/Elwyn Line. Complete removal of existing bridge and towers and removal of access roads. Restore site and landscape.

Anticipated Schedule
Phase 1: Deck Timber replacement This phase focuses on repairs to the superstructure, where the tracks and deck are located. Included are bridge timber replacements and structural steel repairs, new safety walks, cleaning and painting of exposed steel girders and installation of handrails for inspection personnel. Busing provided between University City and Elwyn Station.
Phase 2: Structure repairs and PaintingThis phase focuses on repairs to the steel piers, towers, girders, abutments and foundation footings that support the superstructure, which will require temporary roadway detouring. Also included are measures to mitigate erosion and scour around piers, streams beds and along slopes, as well as painting of all three structures.
