Pick-up ArrangementsIt is the procedure at Neutral Bay Public School that K-2 children are collected from their class teacher in the playground by their parents or carers for safety reasons. This takes a little extra time as parents need to park and come into the school. Around pick up time, parking around the school can be difficult. However, in the interests of safety, it is important that our K-2 children are picked up by you or your nominated carer.

Staff NewsMs Jennifer Carew has been appointed permanently to Neutral Bay Public School through merit selection. Congratulations Ms Carew.

Neutral Bay Public School are annual participants in the Premier’s Spelling Bee, which is a state-wide spelling competition that encourages students to become passionate about words, to learn the art of spelling and to expand their vocabulary and knowledge of the English language.

This year, we have decided not to send home a paper booklet of the word lists for environmental reasons. Instead, we emailed the relevant details to all parents of students in Years 4-6.

The current Spelling Bee word lists and information are available from the NSW Government Arts Unit website: https://www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/premiers-spelling-bee

The word lists are password protected. For copyright reasons, we are not allowed to give out the password on the school website so this password was emailed to all parents of Years 4-6 students last week. • The Junior Simple Word Lists are for students in

Year 4 (Levels 1-5)• The Senior Simple Word Lists are for students in

Years 5 & 6 (Levels 2-6)

All students in Years 4-6 are encouraged to take part and make it a challenge to learn new words each week.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee grade finals will be held next term. These dates will be published in the School Newsletter. How many words will your child master?

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)Kindergarten were so lucky to have chickens in our classrooms over the last two weeks. KM and KC very kindly took on the main responsibility of hosting the baby chicks. Kindy studied the ‘life cycle’ of a chicken. We watched them start as eggs in the incubator. Then we watched them very slowly hatch out of their shells. It was amazing to witness! We also watched as their feathers turned from wet and dark to dry, pale and fluffy. Many of us had a turn at holding one of the baby chicks and we all had a turn at patting their soft feathers. This has made us even more excited about our upcoming excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm (in Week 8).

2V are officially Book Creator experts! We have spent the past few weeks brushing up on our technology skills and have become big fans of Book Creator. Book Creator is an iPad application that allows you to construct your own ebook. You can create title pages, type up information and stories and decorate each page with a unique set of colours and fonts. The possibilies are endless!

We love using Book Creator because it is an engaging way to learn. We can practice our planning and writing skills, as well as learn about typing and other important skills using the internet. Here are some pictures of 2V creating their own books!

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)Last week, all of Year 3 went to the Coal Loader in Waverton for a great excursion. The skies may have turned black and moody halfway through, but our experience did not! We learnt all about the history of the area, saw some incredible Indigenous rock carvings and investigated the sustainability programs that they have in place. Did you know that the peninsula, where the Coal Loader is located, is where the Cammeraygal people lived for thousands of years?

If you haven’t been before, we recommend a trip to see how interesting, beautiful and educational this place is.

Thank you to Mrs Devine for organising such a great excursion and to all the parent helpers who came along.

Year 6 are currently studying democracy as part of their history unit. Last week, students were given the opportunity to attend an excursion to Canberra and gain a first-hand look at how our government works. During our trip, students were able to experience locations including Parliament House, Old Parliament House, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon and many more! Despite the cold weather, the students had a wonderful time and learned many amazing things.

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capiral. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributed funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Scientist of the Month:

Each month we will be sharing interesting facts about a famous scientist. This month’s clues are below. If you think you can guess who it is, then email your answer to Mrs Keeling: [email protected]

Scientist of the Month - JuneWho am I?• I was born 1643 and died in 1727.• I am most famous for defining the three laws of

motion and universal gravitation.• Albert Einstein said that I was the smartest person

who ever lived.• I grew up with my grandparents and was an

average student at school .• I invented the reflecting telescope.• Fun Fact: Legend has it that I got my inspiration for

gravity when I saw an apple fall from a tree on my family farm.

• Fun Fact 2: This colour experiment is named after me. It is a fun one you can do at home. https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/disappearing-color-wheel/

Famous Quote:"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."

Science at home:

The science teachers always love hearing of students being inspired to take their learning home. Last term Year 3 engaged in a great colour experiment using textas, water and filter paper. Maxi N (3C) shared his at-home version with us in science class.

Science and Technology News

At home I did an experiment that we did in Science. I put ink on pieces of paper towel, then wet it and watched the colours spread. Lots of different colours came out of the black because black is actually made up of lots of different colours. By Maxi N (3C)

Jocelyn F (3S) decided to perfect a design at home that kept the egg from sustaining any damage. We tested it by dropping it off the balcony of J Block. Jocelyn worked out a design that successfully used air resistance and cushioning to slow the egg’s descent and support it when it hit the ground. Her next challenge is to tweak the design to make it sustainable. Well done, Jocelyn!

National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. The 2019 NRW theme is 'Grounded in Truth. Walk Together with Courage.'https://www.reconci l iat ion.org.au/nat ional-reconciliation-week/page/2/Our students produced some wonderful artworks in alignment with this theme.

National Reconciliation Week 2019

Last term, Year 3 were involved in a challenge to create a structure that would keep an egg from being damaged once dropped from a height. We had some amazing creations across the grade. All classes had the extra challenge of making their creation as sustainable as possible.

Netball Reports Week 6 2019B TeamEnergy danced across the B Team, their faces showing a known look of determination. They wanted a win. On Friday, we played a fabulous team, Artarmon. Special mention to Laci W. (6P), who hurt her wrist but continued to push on though. We excelled with our sense of space, and everyone was there ready for a pass. The support grew stronger and stronger, the cheers grew louder and louder as we neared the end. The buzzer went to end the game. Everyone’s faces glowed with pride; we had won 13-9. The player of the match goes to Chloe W. (6P), who was fired up on the court and caught many intercepts. We had an amazing game and can’t wait to play next week.Written by Georgina M. (6M)

C Team“The game will begin in one minute.”I looked at the faces around me. They all looked like they were thinking the same thing, ‘It’s time for a win’. On Friday, Neutral Bay C Team played Artarmon. Our playing reached an all time high with a 2-0 win for us. Special mention for Rose B-P. (5N) for breaking the ice with her two fabulous goals. Everyone flew around the court, passing and defending amazingly. But the player of the match goes to Anna W. (5T) for her stunning game, connecting the court and assisting our shooters and defenders. It was a great game and I am sure there will be many more to come.Written by Sophie F. (6M)

D1 TeamWhen centre stepped into the circle, we knew today’s game against Lane Cove West would be fun and exciting, and we were right. Throughout the game, we played well, particularly passing the ball to the other players. After 40 minutes, the score was 12-0 their way. I think our downfall was that we clumped up and did not stick to our players. I have decided to give player of the match to Shinna T. (6P) because she was always there to pass to. Overall the D1s did really well and we should be very proud of ourselves.Written by Penny L. (6M)

D2 TeamWe arrived at the court, raring to go. Lane Cove arrived shortly after, looking strong and determined. Game on! We started with ball and after a few rebounds, we scored. Yes! Next, it was Lane Cove’s turn with the ball. Soon we intercepted, and it was another goal for us. This repeated, and we had an amazing shot by Ruby O (6S). It was then half time and we were winning 5-0. Lane Cove looked ready and filled with tenacity. We tried hard to defend, but Lane Cove ended up scoring twice. But then the siren went. We had won 5-2 and we were proud of ourselves. Special mention to Elise B (6F) who got pushed over and Audrey T. (6M) for amazing defence. My player of the match has to go to Ruby O (6S) for her amazing shot and for being resilient.

Written by Jodhi H. (6K)

E TeamThe siren rang. It was time to begin. Lane Cove West started with the ball, but we gained possession and scored. The game went on and at half time we were tied, 2-2. In the second half, we tried our best to defeat Lane Cove West, but came out with a tie of 3 all. Our team was happy with the score. Player of the match goes to Chanel W. (6S) for being a great sport and for her incredible intercepting. We can improve on not stepping and passing faster.Written by Emma F. (6S)

Boys TeamOn Friday, the Boys Team had a low scoring game against Willoughby. In the first half, we shot one goal and they scored two. We were determined to make a comeback. In the second half, we had to accept the numerous decisions against us. Willoughby ended up winning 3-2. We need to work on sticking to our players. Oliver M. (5A) was player of the match for making some great passes and scoring a goal despite being off for a half.Written by Daniel B. (6S)

Due to the cooler weather, The Juicie Fairies have decided that they will stop selling Juices and will have Koala Popcorn available to Kindyland (weather dependant and sufficient Kindy Volunteers). If your child would like to purchase popcorn, please send along one dollar to school on Wednesdays.

Due to the Government Health Regulations, the Canteen will also cease selling the Piranha Snaps ($1.50) over the counter. These will be replaced with Sour Cream and Chive Grain Waves ($1).

We remind PSSA senior students that it is important NO hot food is ordered. Sushi and sandwiches (not toasties) are always the best option. Please also indicate PSSA on Flexischools so we have your child’s lunch ready prior to the normal collection time.

The Canteen Team

Canteen NewsThank you to all our KSV volunteers last week, you did an amazing job filling the roster. This week we have 2C, followed by 2H next week. 2C - we desperately need your help this Thursday and Friday, so if you can sign up on these days that would be wonderful (especially the 9am-11am slots). Remember, you will receive a free lunch, a warm cup of tea or coffee and hopefully see your child at service.
