Wellbeing WeekIn Week 5 of every term NBPS hosts a Wellbeing Week for staff and students This term our Wellbeing Week theme is interwoven with our PBL system Wellbeing is the state of being comfortable healthy and happy When students follow the Bay Way they make sure that our school environment is a comfortable and happy place for everyone When they focus on their wellbeing at home and at school they can improve their mental and physical health This week an activity matrix has been sent home with students in lieu of homework The matrix includes suggestions of activities to do that focus on wellbeing as students aim to be responsible respectful and do their best

Clean Up Australia Day - 1 March 2020To support the Clean Up Australia Day Campaign our school will be participating in our own Clean Up activities on Friday 28th February We will be cleaning up our school and surrounding areas If you wish please send in a paper bag to school with your child to collect rubbish in We look forward to a great day Many thanks for your assistance

SRC News

We hope everyone had a safe and happy holidays and welcome to the new year In the past three weeks the SRC has been meeting to discuss various matters regarding our school country and planet Each SRC member has been allocated a class within the school seeking their advice and feedback Our first major job this year was numbering all the 3-6 students for the swimming carnival Some of our current ideas are relaunching waste free Wednesday and supporting the bushfire relief and farmers in need throughout Australia Keep your eyes open for our next update

Too sick for school

Bronchitis Symptoms are coughing a runny nose sore throat and mild fever The cough is often dry at first becoming moist after a couple of days There may be a slight wheeze and shortness of breath A higher fever (typically above 39ordmC) may indicate pneumonia

until they are feeling better Antibiotics may be needed

Chickenpox (Varicella)

Slight fever runny nose and a rash that begins as raised pink spots that blister and scab for 5 days from the onset of the

rash and the blisters have dried

Conjunctivitis The eye feels lsquoscratchyrsquo is red and may water Lids may stick together on waking while there is discharge from

the eye unless a doctor has diagnosed a non-infectious cause

Diarrhoea (no organism identified)

Two or more consecutive bowel motions that are looser and more frequent than normal and possibly stomach cramps for at least 24 hours after

diarrhoea stops

Fever A temperature of 385degC or more in older infants and children until temperature is normal

Gastroenteritis A combination of frequent loose or watery stools (diarrhoea) vomiting fever stomach cramps headaches for at least 24 hours after

diarrhoea andor vomiting stops

German measles (Rubella)

Often mild or no symptoms mild fever runny nose swollen nodes pink blotchy rash that lasts a short time for at least 4 days after the

rash appears

Glandular Fever (Mononucleosis EBV infection)

Symptoms include fever headache sore throat tiredness swollen nodes unless theyrsquore feeling unwell

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

Generally a mild illness caused by a virus perhaps with a fever blisters around the mouth on the hands and feet and perhaps the nappy area in babies

until all blisters have dried

Hayfever (Allergic rhinitis) caused by allergy to pollen (from grasses flowers and trees) dust mites animal fur or hair mould spores cigarette smoke

Sneezing a blocked or runny nose (rhinitis) itchy eyes nose and throat headaches unless they feel unwell or

are taking a medication which makes them sleepy

Head lice or nits (Pediculosis)

Itchy scalp white specks stuck near the base of the hairs lice may be found on the scalp while continuing to treat head

Stage 1 News (Years 1 amp 2 )Stage News1A have kicked off Year 1 with lots of Maths learning activities Students practised measurement concepts by hefting classroom objects and comparing masses using scales and weights The class had a go at using a calculator code to count off the decade 1A also developed their understanding of place value in two-digit numbers They have become experts at bundling tens and ones to model and compare numbers

Kindy are having so much fun as we get use to participating in various Literacy activities throughout the week So far Kindy have learnt the sounds for the letters A M S and T and have had so much fun engaging in activities that support our learning of these sounds KJ loved painting patterned apples and drawing marvellous Monsters We have become very skilled at brainstorming words that start with our focus sound and have created our very own picture dictionary

Kindergarten have had another exciting week We are learning so much about lsquoThe Bay Wayrsquo and following the classschool rules Many children have received lsquoCaught you being good tokensrsquo and some students have even got a lsquoBayley stickerrsquo It was our first ever time to the Library We were SO thrilled to visit the main campus Library and choose some beautiful books to borrow

2R amp 2M have started off the year reigniting their brains with some hands on whole number games Included in the rotations were number chart puzzlesthat used 1 2 3 and 4-digit numbers as well as before and after concepts aided by the 120 chart mat We also used card decks to re-fresh our memory of place value in order to build the largest number possible using a place value chart Lots of clever minds were displayed and developed with these games

Stage 3 News (Years 5 amp 6)Stage News contYear Five are meeting their Kindergarten buddies for the first time this term 5D met with KM recently and started to get to know each other They had been looking forward to it since the beginning of this term and were brimming with excitement by the time we reached Kindyland Here are some artworks and reflections from 5D

ldquoI was really looking forward to it and I am really happy to have Eddie as my buddyrdquo said Lulu

ldquoI absolutely enjoyed meeting my buddy Millie we did a drawing and she was really artisticrdquo said Sayaka

ldquoThe buddies were small but they had big heartsrdquo said Amelie

ldquoMy buddy was really funny and kindrdquo said Orlando

ldquoOur buddy loves the colour pink and she is so cute and fun and one of the nicest kindyrsquos I have ever metrdquo Olivia and Ella said

ldquoI loved meeting my buddy especially when she showed me all of her artworksrdquo said Lucia

ldquoMy buddy has a really cute smile that is truly her ownrdquosaid Charlotte

ldquoMy buddy is quiet and I like being with himrdquo said Hugo

This term in 4K we have been focusing on the importance of feedback and a growth mindset to learn new things and move our learning forward We have learned how to give each other constructive peer feedback for a range of learning areas

bull Art Watching a video called lsquoAustinrsquos butterflyrsquo as a stimulus we realised the power that constructive helpful and kind feedback can have on improving an artwork We voted as a class and decided to draw rainbow lorikeets to link to our geography unit on Australia We were given an allocated time frame to draw a lorikeet and then after three drafts and two sets of constructive feedback from different peers we could see the incredible visible improvements that were achieved

bull Writing This term we have been refining our skills whilst writing informative texts We have been focusing on our use of descriptive language and time connectives After each session we provide feedback to each other against a set success criteria so we can identify what we did well and what we need to do to achieve a higher level next time This instant feedback allowed us to each produce well-published texts that we are all proud of and stuck up on our class lsquoWow Wallrsquo for others to read

Finally we have focused on the importance of having a growth mindset to improve our learning in class Each of us had to name a goal for the year and brainstorm strategies we could use in an instance where we were stuck or having difficulties understanding By using phrases such as lsquolearning torsquo or lsquoyetrsquo rather than lsquocanrsquotrsquo we strive to continually improve in class and track our progress on a lsquobump it uprsquo wall for literacy and numeracy

Do you have anything you would like to donate

Perhaps you have a business or know someone who would like to donate to the raffle

The raffle tickets are printed with the item and the donorrsquos business name Raffle tickets are distributed to all families at Neutral Bay Public School to sell (over 700 families in Neutral Bay and surrounding areas)

This is a great way to market and acknowledge your contribution

Some examples of previous raffle items are restaurant or spa experience vouchers gifts holiday accommodation and gym membership

Neutral Bay Public School offers three bands from Year 3 - Junior Senior and Concert Band Each of them are conducted by a professional bandmaster

There are also two string orchestras (NBPS Orchestra and Senior Chamber) which are open to children K-6

Both of these programs are co-ordinated by parent volunteers

Stage 3 News (Years 5 amp 6)Stage News contYear Five are meeting their Kindergarten buddies for the first time this term 5D met with KM recently and started to get to know each other They had been looking forward to it since the beginning of this term and were brimming with excitement by the time we reached Kindyland Here are some artworks and reflections from 5D

ldquoI was really looking forward to it and I am really happy to have Eddie as my buddyrdquo said Lulu

ldquoI absolutely enjoyed meeting my buddy Millie we did a drawing and she was really artisticrdquo said Sayaka

ldquoThe buddies were small but they had big heartsrdquo said Amelie

ldquoMy buddy was really funny and kindrdquo said Orlando

ldquoOur buddy loves the colour pink and she is so cute and fun and one of the nicest kindyrsquos I have ever metrdquo Olivia and Ella said

Stage 2 News (Years 3 amp 4)

This term in 4K we have been focusing on the importance of feedback and a growth mindset to learn new things and move our learning forward We have learned how to give each other constructive peer feedback for a range of learning areas

bull Art Watching a video called lsquoAustinrsquos butterflyrsquo as a stimulus we realised the power that constructive helpful and kind feedback can have on improving an artwork We voted as a class and decided to draw rainbow lorikeets to link to our geography unit on Australia We were given an allocated time frame to draw a lorikeet and then after three drafts and two sets of constructive feedback from different peers we could see the incredible visible improvements that were achieved

bull Writing This term we have been refining our skills whilst writing informative texts We have been focusing on our use of descriptive language and time connectives After each session we provide feedback to each other against a set success criteria so we can identify what we did well and what we need to do to achieve a higher level next time This instant feedback allowed us to each produce well-published texts that we are all proud of and stuck up on our class lsquoWow Wallrsquo for others to read

For those students participating in PSSA it is essential that PSSA is selected in Flexischools We need to prepare these orders at a different time than usual so if PSSA is not selected the lunch orders will not be ready in time For all PSSA students hot food and frozen items are not available Sandwiches (not toasties) and sushi is best
