"No person shall be allowed to ride on material hoistsexcept for the purposes of inspection and maintenance." -OSHA 1926.552(b)(1)(i).

"Personnel hoists used in bridge tower construction shallbe approved by a registered professional engineer anderected under the supervision of a qualified engineercompetent in this field." - OSHA 1926.552(c)(17)(i).

"Crawler Locomotive and Truck Cranes; No hoisting,lowering, swinging or traveling shall be done whileanyone is on the load or hook assembly." - OSHA191O.180(h)(3)(v).

Construction worksite regulation stipulates: "The use of acrane or derrick to hoist employees on a personnelplatform is prohibited. Except when the erection, use, anddismantling, of conventional means of reaching theworksite, such as a personnel hoist, ladder, stairway, aeriallift, elevating work platform or scaffold, would be morehazardous or is notpossible because of structural design orworksite conditions." - OSHA 1926.550(g)(2).

"If a particular standard is specifically applicable to acondition, practice, means, method, operation, or process,it shall prevail over any different general standard ..."OSHA 191O.5(c)(1).

The following safety standards provide additionalrecommendations for material and personnel handlingsystems:

"Safety Requirements for Workman's Hoists" - ANSIAIO.4.

"Safety requirements for material hoists - no snatchblocks or hood type sheaves shall be used on any hoisttower." - ANSI AIO.5-14.5.9.

"Safety requirements for rope-guided and nonguidedworker's hoists." - ANSI AIO.22.

"Safety requirements for work platforms suspended fromcranes or derricks." - ANSI AIO.28.

"Safety Requirements for Powered Platforms for BuildingMaintenance." - ANSI A120.1.

Employee training should include information given inOSHA training literature, lift system manufacturer'sliterature and this document.

"The employer shall instruct each employee in therecognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and theregulations applicable to his work environment to controlor eliminate any hazards or other exposure to injury" -OSHA 1926.21 (b)(2).

Understand all governing laws and safety standards beforeuse of Man Handler snatch blocks in lift systems.

The following are some regulations governing material andpersonnel handling systems.

"Safety Requirements for Scaffolding" - OSHA 1910.28.

"When hoisting machines are used on two-pointsuspension scaffolds, such machines shall be of a designtested and approved by a nationally recognized testinglaboratory..." - OSHA 91O.28(g)(3).

. Always know applied lift system load ...Avoid improperMan Handler snatch block selection.

Lift system load (LSL) applied to the snatch block fittingis based upon line pull (LP) and load factor (LF) for agiven lift angle (LA).

Maximum LSL applied to snatch block fitting must beknown for proper snatch block selection.

LSL is calculated by the following formula:

LSL=(LP) (LF) LA. See illustrationand table in FigureNo.1. LSL must be calculated for each snatch block in thelift system.

Snatch block WLL with appropriate design factor shall beequal to or greater than the corresponding maximum LSL.

Man Handler snatch blocks have a product identifiergiving WLL, design factor, wire rope range, and importantuser warnings. The information is required forconfmnation of proper application prior to use.

· Never overload a Man Handler snatch block ...Understand Working Load Limits.

Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum working load "to be applied to a Man Handler snatch block for the givenapplication. WLL applies to in-line loading and does notinclude torsional, binding, shock or side load effects.

The following are some regulations and standardsgoverning lift system design factors.

"Scaffolds shall not be loaded in excess of the workingload for which they are intended." - OSHA 191O.28(a)(7).

"Scaffolds and their components shall be capable ofsupporting without failure at least four times the maximumintended load." - OSHA 191O.28(a)4.

"Each suspension rope, including hardware, used onadjustable suspension scaffolds shall be capable ofsupporting, without failure, at least six times the maximumintended load applied or transmitted to that rope with thescaffold operating at either the rated load of the hoist, ortwo (minimum) times the stall load of the hoist, whicheveris greater." - OSHA 1926.451(a)(4).

"Factor of safety for driving-machines and sheaves." -ANSI A1O.4-22.9.

"When sheaves are used to provide additional loadcarrying capacity, the suspension system shall be designed

to support four times the rated load of the hoist multiplied ~by the number of active ropes." - ANSI 10.8-6.2.2. I I"Personnel rating - the design factor shall not be less than12.0" - API 2C - 6.5.6.3.

Standard Gunnebo Johnson WLL's are based on a 4 designfactor for material handling and a 12 design factor forhandling personnel. Lift dynamics, duty cycle and liftsystem type may require an increased design factor, hencea reduced WLL. Inattention to required design factor canresult in Man Handler snatch block overload. · Never use a Man Handler snatch block withoutcomplying with fall arrest system regulations ...Avoiddeath or injury.

"Boatswains chair ... The workman shall be protected bya safety life line belt attached to a lifeline. The lifeline shallbe securely attached to substantial members of a structure(not scaffold), or to securely rigged lines, which will safelysuspend the worker in case of a fall." - OSHA1910.280)(4).

"This subpart sets forth requirements and criteria for fallprotection in construction workplaces ..." - OSHA1926.500(a)(I).

"This section sets forth requirements for employersto provide fall protection systems.. ." - OSHA1926.501(a)(I).

"Fall protection systems required by this part shallcomply with the applicable provisions ..." - OSHA1926.502(a)(I).

"Fall protection. Provisions shall be made for anchorageof the tail line or lanyard from each occupants safety beltor harness." - ASME A120.1-3.7.5.10

"Fall-protection equipment and emergency-descentdevices shall not be used as a primary support toaccomplish work." - ANSI 10.8-6.1.9.

"Full body harness shall be used and the lanyard shall besecured to the suspended platform or above the crane hookor ball." - ANSI A 10.28-10.2

Man Handler snatch blocks shall not be used in personnellift systems unless complying with applicable federal orlocal system and fall arrest regulations.

. Never rig a Man Handler snatch block improperly ...Avoid dropped loads and snatch block damage.

Man Handler snatch block pin keepers must be properlyinstalled before use.

Man Handler snatch block must be rigged to insurenecessary freedom for in-line loading alignment.

Man Handler snatch block equipped with tether line optionmust be rigged with no more than a maximum of six (6)inches of tether line slack. Excessive slack underemergency conditions may result in injury or death to liftedpersonnel. See Figure No.2.

. Never use a worn-out or damaged Man Handler snatchblock ...Avoid malfunction or failure.

OSHA regulations, ASME and ANSI standards previouslyreferenced give appropriate lift system inspectionrequirements.

A thorough periodic inspection of the Man Handler snatchblock shall be made on the basis of (A) frequency of use; (B)severity of service conditions; (C) nature of lifts being made;and (D) experience gained on the service life of Man Handlersnatch blocks used in similar circumstances. Such

inspections shall in no event be at intervals greater than onceevery 12 months.

Man Handler snatch block components with wear greaterthan 10 percent of the original dimension for any cross-section shall be removed from service.

Man Handler snatch block side plates, latch pin, sheave,center pin, yoke, keepers, swivel "T" or attachment that isbroken,cracked,bent, stretched,twistedor severelycorrodedshall be removed from service and shall not be repaired.

Bearing replacement is indicated when sheave wobble orpoor-rotationis observed.

Corrugatedsheave groove reduces wire rope life and shouldbe replaced to maximizewire rope performance.

· Never use a Man Handler snatch block in extremetemperatures ...Avoid functional or structural failure.

Man Handler Snatch Blocks shall be permanently removedfrom service if heated above 300°F.

Man Handler Snatch Blocks shall not be used while heatedabove 200°F or cooled below -40°F.

Man Handler Snatch Blocks Working Load Limit (WLL)on product identifier is valid between temperatures of200°F and -4 oF.

Man Handler Snatch Blocks WLL shall be reduced by 50%when cooled below -4 oF.

· Never use a Man Handler snatch block in alkaline oracidic conditions ...Avoid structural failure.

Gunnebo Johnson Man Handler Snatch Blocks shall notbe used in alkaline or acidic conditions. Resulting metalembrittlement and accelerated corrosion can cause suddenfailure. Hot dip galvanizing and electro-plating of ManHandler components shall be done only by GunneboJohnson.

Limited Warranty

Notice to Customer:

Please read carefully. These terms and conditions containdisclaimers of warranties and strict limitation of liabilityand remedies.

Manufacturer warrants to the original wholesale orO.E.M. purchaser and/or to the original retailpurchaser only that the goods, equipment ormerchandise described herein will be free from defectsin material and workmanship for a period of twelve(12) months from date of manufacturer's shipment.Effective with shipments after 1/1/1994 all standardJ-Blocks have a (3) year warranty against defects inmaterial and workmanship. Should the goods, equipmentor merchandise prove defective within such (thirty six (36)months J-Blocks) twelve (12) month period GunneboJohnson Corporation will, at its option, repair or replacethe same when returned to its plant, charges prepaid,provided that Gunnebo Johnson Corporation is givenwritten notice of such claimed defect promptly and issubmitted, freight prepaid, within such twelve (12) monthperiod for examination. Repair and/or replacement at theoption of Gunnebo Johnson Corporation shall be the soleand exclusive remedy of the buyer for breach of the aboveexpress warranty.

Except as expressly set forth herein, Gunnebo JohnsonCorporation makes no warranty either express orimplied, that the goods, equipment or merchandiseshall be merchantable or fit for any particularpurpose or use, nor does it make any other warranty,express, implied or statutory. Gunnebo JohnsonCorporation shall have no liability for incidental,consequential, special, general or other damages arisingfrom the use of its product including, but not limited to,failure of the goods, equipment, or merchandise toperform any general or particular function or purposewhether such damage or failure is due to mistake ordeficiency in any design, formula, plan specifications,advertising material, printed instructions, defectivematerials, defective or improper assembly or otherwise,the sole liability of Gunnebo Johnson Corporation beingto repair or replace, at its option, defects in material orworkmanship as stated in the preceding paragraph.

Gunnebo Johnson Corporation shall not have anyresponsibility or liability for damage in shipment, duringassembly, installation, erection, or that arising fromaccidents, abuse or improper operation of the goods,equipment or merchandise.

These terms and conditions shall supersede and, in case ofconflict, shall have control over any other terms orprovisions in any oral or written purchase order to otherdocument pertaining to the goods, equipment ormerchandise described herein, including any negotiationsbetween parties or as suggested by any product catalog or

Engineering, product safety, inspection andmaintenance information is included in this documentand is available upon request free of charge. We agree, inperforming the work required by any purchase order, notto discriminate against any worker because of race, creed,color, sex or national origin.

In the event of stoppage or partial stoppage of ourplants or shipments of the items ordered by thecustomer due to causes beyond our control (such as, butnot limited to: strikes, differences with workmen, fires,floods, accidents, scarcity of labor, materials, power, fuel,or transportation difficulties, war - whether in this countryor abroad, government regulations, orders orproclamations, laws, acts of public enemies, mobs orrioters, (or acts of God) deliveries hereunder may besuspended or partially suspended, during the continuanceof such interruptions.

By acceptance of our sales order acknowledgementcopy you accept all the terms and provisions heretoforeset forth and agree that the delivery of the merchandisedescribed in said order shall be subject to no other termsand conditions whatsoever unless additional terms aremade the subject of negotiation and are covered byseparate written acceptance by us.
