PALMA NOVA ANGLICAN CHURCH WHERE ARE WE?

Palma Nova Anglican Church is based at the Upper Room Christian Fellowship premises

at 8, Calle Paris, Palma Nova. Next To O’Neill

  • 5

It is the newest of the four Anglican Church communities on Mallorca and is there for

    anyone who wishes to attend.

We hold regular services of Sung Holy Communion on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each

month beginning at 11.30am and usually followed by a cup of coffee in O’Neil’s Bar next

    door afterwards.

The service includes hymns, prayers, a short sermon, and the chance to receive

communion as together we worship almighty God.

At the Palma Nova Anglican Church we are also happy to carry out baptisms or wedding

blessings although given the space these would be for small numbers of guests.

Thanks to the good folk at The Upper Room, who allow us to use their premises in this

    way.

PALMA WEDDING BLESSINGS AND RENEWAL OF VOWS

  • 7

It would be difficult to imagine a more lovely island on which to get married or to renew

existing wedding vows, perhaps on a special wedding anniversary.

Our church in Palma is available to all, regardless of nationality or faith, and our excellent

relationships with the island’s Roman Catholic Priests mean that we can often arrange for

marriages and wedding blessings to take place in other locations on the island.

Wedding Blessings and Renewal of Vows are a significant part of our income (often Gift-

Aided). Over the last few years this has been falling due to the activities on the Island of

very competitive “Celebrants” and in 2020 due to Coronavirus we are having to defer

    ceremonies until next year.

    24,903 26,542 18,537 19,028 10,338

It is important that You (being the successful applicant) will have a flexible modern

approach to Wedding Blessings and Renewal of Vows.

    BAPTISMS

We have several Baptisms during the year,

The baptism of both adults and children normally takes place during our main Sunday

morning Service. This is so that the newly baptised person can be seen to be joining the

family of the church and be welcomed into its membership. Baptisms are normally carried

out at the person´s own local church. If the person is a visitor or tourist to Mallorca we

strongly recommend that the person contacts their local church in the first instance.

Confirmations by Bishop David 28th October 2018

We have Confirmation Services every couple of years covering a wide range of ages.

PALMA FUNERALS AND INTERNMENT OF ASHES

Inevitably we have our quota of funerals within the resident community and, sadly,

sometimes from amongst visitors on holiday.

In Mallorca funerals tend to take place within only a couple of days of the death.

Therefore, we often have Memorial services several weeks after the death to allow for a

    wider attendance.

    GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE

A quiet area beside the Anglican Church in Palma is set aside for the interment of

cremated remains and memorials. Space is becoming limited.

    OUR HISTORY

The architect who designed our church was Sr. Carlos Sobron. When he presented his

plans, the Church Committee spontaneously rose and applauded him, because the plans

were just what they had hoped for. To their amazement and delight, Sr Sobron told them

he would not charge for the plans as he never expected to be asked to design a church

    again.

The lovely wall behind the altar was built by a local Mallorcan stonemason, Miguel, from

    nearby Genova.

He told us that he built it with love and care because he felt it might serve as his memorial.

He also said that he had placed the darker stones in a meaningful way.

Miguel stood at its consecration with tears in his eyes.

A few days later he died, taking the solution to the mystery of the dark stones with him….

Not everything in our church is new. The communion or sanctuary rails, the pulpit and

pews of northern pine all came from the old church (a former soda water factory) in El

Terreno. The altar had been intended by the architect to be constructed in beautiful wood

to contrast with the stone of the walls but eventually it was decided to have a traditional

    stone altar.

The Triptych is traditional in style and contrasts pleasantly with the very simple and

modern interior of our church. It shows ‘Our Lady of Peace’ with an ‘aureole’ of the heads

of nine children, representing all the ethnic groups of mankind. On either side of this

central painting are our saints of title: St Philip and St James. The triptych was painted by

the Croatian-born Peruvian artist Kristian Krekovic and was commissioned and donated to

our church in 1973 by a faithful member and sidesman of our congregation, the late Mr

    Eric Beeby.

From 1960 on, Kristian Krekovic resided in Pama where he died in 1985. Palma has a

museum named after him devoted predominantly to his art.

    CHURCH HOUSE

This three bedroomed house is built alongside the Church on three floors (plus a roof-top

terrace) and has a separate entrance from the Church.

The House was extensively renovated and rewired eight years ago. Because of problems

with the very old oil-fired central heating system, which heats the Church more than

adequately but suffers from old iron pipes in the house, two years ago, we converted the

House system to electrical combined Cooling and Heating units.

You (being the successful applicant) will enjoy full free use of the House together with

electricity, landline and mobile ‘phone plus the one year old church Hyundai.

    PASTORAL PARTNERS

We have a Pastoral Partners Group which meets 5 times per year for training and support,

comprising several trained Pastoral Partners run by Revs Viv and Ron Larkin.

    GRUB AND GOSPEL

Pre-Covid-19, an occasional Bible Study Group which met after the service for lunch

together and discussion about the Gospel Reading. When meeting restrictions are lifted it

is planned for this group to meet regularly on the first Sunday of each month.

    PALMA GROUPS

We have a hall called the Coleman Hall for community use according to the mission of the

Anglican Church. It has a stage at one end, a kitchen for providing refreshments, various

cupboards and two toilets. It is situated under the church and can be entered via the Lift or steps at one end to the outside front of the church or steps at the other end to the outside

    rear of the church.

It can accommodate about eighty people and is capable of raising several thousand euros

    per year in donations.

It is important that You (being the successful applicant) will have a flexible modern

approach to Fund-Raising Activities both in the Church and in The Coleman Hall.

    SUNDAY CLUB

We have a thriving Sunday Club led by our Safeguarding Officer Linda Cade supported by

two other Teachers and other helpers as required by regulations.

They meet most Sunday mornings except during the Summer Holidays.

They go down to the Coleman Hall during the Gradual Hymn and return in time to join in

    Communion.

CASH RESERVES AND A FORECAST FOR THE REST OF 2020

At the end of April 2020 we had nearly 10,000 euros in our Spanish Bank and nearly

    £32,000 in our UK bank.

Doing a forecast for the rest of this year is very difficult and not very helpful because it

will not be representative of the next 5 years. We do not know how many people will

return to Church when we reopen. And we do not know when or if we will resume using

locums. Basically, for the rest of 2020 we will simply go from day to day using our above

cash reserves and monthly pledged giving of circa 1,000 euros per month. We shall have

to pay the Diocese Common Fund of 8,142 euros starting in June.

    FIVE YEAR FORECAST

How much can we afford for Ministry?

Starting with the 2019 Audited Accounts dated 16 March 2020 (see above)

    INCOME 75,000

    EXPENDITURE 114,500

  • 17

    PLUS

Extra Payment for Common Fund 2,000

Extra Charity payments to meet 3,000 target 2,300

    LESS

Cash Reserves of 35,000 over 5 yrs (7,000)

    Cost of Chaplain (52,200)

    New Car (13,500)

    Subtotal (68,400)

    NET EXPENDITURE (46,100)

    AVAILABLE FOR MINISTRY 28,900

    Potential for further Improvements:

    Stop Charity Payments 3,000

    Volountary Cleaning 2,600

    Volountary Administration 8,000

28,900 would probably enable us to sustain a stipend of (say) 23,000 euros per year

without any pension contributions but plus social security of (say) 6,000 euros per year

this would probably not be sufficient for a full-time chaplain. This might be sufficient for

only a half time Ministry which might not be very attractive to potential incumbents.
