Adult obesity in Surrey Heath This is the estimated percentage of the population aged 16 and over considered obese. Individuals are regarded as obese if they have a body mass index of 30 or more. The data is based on modelled estimates using individual-level data from the Health Survey for England. This is based on data for 2006-2008.

There is an association between all cause mortality and obesity. Obesity decreases life expectancy by up to nine years. Obesity causes insulin insensitivity, which is an important causal factor in diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke. Obesity is associated with the development of hormone sensitive cancers, and the increase mechanical load increases liability to osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea. Obesity carries psychosocial penalties. There are many routes by which obesity is a detriment to wellbeing.

In Surrey Heath it is estimated that 22.2% of adults are obese. Within Surrey Heath, Mytchett and Deepcut has the highest level of adult obesity with 24.6% considered obese. St Pauls has the lowest proportion of adults considered obese, at 17.9%.

Child development and educational attainment This is the percentage of children with a good level of development at the age of 5. A good level of development is defined as achieving 78 points across all thirteen Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP) scales, including a minimum number in particular areas of learning and development. This is expressed as a percentage of pupils at the end of the academic year in which they turn 5, by pupil residency. The highest priority in the Marmot Review was the aim to give every child the best start in life as this is crucial to reducing health inequalities across the life course. As the foundations for human development are laid in early childhood the review proposed an indicator of readiness for school to capture early year’s development. The source data for this indicator was produced at Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) level for the Public Health England Local Health profiles. Low level counts have been suppressed and therefore local figures will not sum up to the national figures.

Within Surrey Heath the percentage of children with a good level of development at the age of 5 is 80.2%. This compares with 66.4% for the South East, and 63.5% for England. Within Surrey Heath, St Pauls has the highest percentage of children with a good level of development at the age of 5 at 85.5%, and Mytchett and Deepcut the lowest at 61.5%.

This is the number of pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* to C (including English and Maths) or equivalent, as a percentage of pupils at the end of key stage 4 in schools maintained by the local authority, at the end of the academic year reported. Educational attainment is influenced by both the quality of education children receive and their family's socioeconomic circumstances. Educational qualifications are a determinant of an individual's labour market position, which in turn influences income, housing and other material resources. These are related to health and health inequalities. The source data for this indicator was produced at Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) level for the Public Health England Local Health profiles. Low level counts have been suppressed and therefore local figures will not sum up to the national figures.

Within Surrey Heath the percentage of children with 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* to C (including English and Maths) is 63.3%. This compares with 60.2% for the South East, and 58.8% for England. Within Surrey Heath, Lightwater has the highest percentage of children with 5 or more GCSEs at 83.1%, and Old Dean the lowest at 42.9%.
