The New Sun Times

From the Desk of Director Kathy Hull:

“Get Into the Act” Older Americans Month 2015

Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. The Senior Center is the focal point for these activities in New Fairfield. Stop by to see how you can “Get Into the Act”. Don’t miss the next great Friends of the Senior Center events: Painting under the Stars in May and the Annual Tag, Bake, and Plant Sale in June. (details on page 2.)

Ready for shooting Pool? These fellas meet Tuesdays at 3:00 and play on the newly re-furbished table paid for by the New Fairfield Community Thrift Shop. Join them! Ann Mannino and her

daughter, Janice, at the Mother Daughter Tea. See more great Mother Daugh-ter photos by Megan Brooks on our web site.

“Don’t Hang Up” with Billy Michael (ctr.) was a truly entertaining event. On the left are singers Rita Mulvey and Donna Bowe. Chris makes a call on the right.

Good info found by our seniors …

Add Years to Your Life with Hand Weights

A UCLA study reveals an easy way to add to your longevity. Just do 10 bicep curls twice a week, while holding light hand weights. Adding muscle reduces your risk of heart disease by strengthening the heart, Type 2 diabe-tes by improving insulin sensitivity, and your rate of recovery by ensuring your body has plenty of protein to use

while recuperating. (Woman’s World magazine 3/23/15)

Thanks to Betty Kawulicz for submitting this and reminding everyone that our Weight Taining and Sittercise classes include 10 bicep curls as a part of an even more complete workout.

And life to your years...

Our friend Dr. Rolf Martin began the Blueberry Study at the New Fairfield Senior Center in 2002.and it con-tinued from there

Conclusion as reported to the American Aging Association in April 13, 2015: Daily consumption of wild blueber-ries is compatible with and may help support year-to-year memory improvements lasting approximately 10 years.
