The following list provides some ideas: • Growth Mindset: The belief that given me and effort we can always grow in our learning and understanding. If your child can’t understand something, then tell them “not yet” and encourage this mindset. • Know your Goals: What do I need to understand/ be able to do, to signal compleon of this learning? Students should be able to discuss the learning intenons and success criteria that support learning progress and have a clear understanding of marking criteria for assessment tasks. Take the me to talk these over with your child as they are an evidence based source of success. • Be Organised: Check that your child uses their diary effecvely, has a study/revision roune that reflects whether it is a busy me for assessments or me for more roune tasks. • Help make the Learning Relevant: Teachers and parents can both provide rich experiences, stories and help make connecons that provide students with a point to the learning. • Value Persistence: The more complex the learning, the more likely it is that the student won’t get it right first me. We need to reinforce that learning is a journey and not giving up or being put off by setbacks are the keys to success in future endeavours. Farewell to the wonderful Ms Werlemann. You have inspired so many students over the years, and will be very missed! Congratulaons to the KMHS debang team and their fantasc efforts in The Premier’s Debang Challenge in 2019! I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Werlemann on her successful promoon to the role of Curriculum Advisor at Tuggerah Office for a period of 3 years. From Our PrincipalWelcome back to Term 3As we start this new semester, it is timely to think about some of the characteristics of successful students and discussions that parents can have with their children. The following list provides some ideas:

• Growth Mindset: The belief that given time and effort we can always grow in our learning and understanding. If your child can’t understand something, then tell them “not yet” and encourage this mindset.

• Know your Goals: What do I need to understand/be able to do, to signal completion of this learning? Students should be able to discuss the learning intentions and success criteria that support learning progress and have a clear understanding of marking criteria for assessment tasks. Take the time to talk these over with your child as they are an evidence based source of success.

• Be Organised: Check that your child uses their diary effectively, has a study/revision routine that reflects whether it is a busy time for assessments or time for more routine tasks.

• Help make the Learning Relevant: Teachers and parents can both provide rich experiences, stories and help make connections that provide students with a point to the learning.

• Value Persistence: The more complex the learning, the more likely it is that the student won’t get it right first time. We need to reinforce that learning is a journey and not giving up or being put off by setbacks are the keys to success in future endeavours.

Farewell to the wonderful Ms Werlemann. You have inspired so many students over the years, and will be very missed!

Congratulations to the KMHS debating team and their fantastic efforts in The Premier’s Debating Challenge in 2019!

Let’s start the term off with reinforcing these strategies for successful learning and watch our students thrive.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Werlemann on her successful promotion to the role of Curriculum Advisor at Tuggerah Office for a period of 3 years. Whilst she will be very much missed, it is another example of the calibre of staff at this school. We welcome Ms Harrison to the role.

Kariong Mountains High School Newsletter - Term 3 - Week 2 - 2019 2

From Our Deputy PrincipalWelcome back to all students. Hoping a happy and safe break was had by all and their families. As we head into Semester 2, all students should take this opportunity to reflect on their Semester 1 reports. Junior students can examine their grades, outcomes

and comments for all subjects and then set some realistic goals for improvement.

Year 11 students are working toward their exams at the end of term and completing other assessment tasks to ensure they satisfactorily complete their Preliminary studies. For students with unresolved N-warnings, time is running out for these to be completed and, therefore, are in danger of being N-determined. The same applies for our Year 12 students who have their HSC exams at the start of next term.

School UniformWith the cooler weather upon us, it appears that some students have decided not to wear uniform. Black tops, white tops, grey tops, black track pants and grey track pants are not part of our uniform.

Our colour is navy blue

Students know when they get dressed of a morning whether they are in uniform or not, as such, it is their responsibility.

On the odd occasion that a student cannot be in uniform, they are to see me before 8:45am with a note from home and I will issue a uniform slip.

There are many reasons why school uniform is important, as explained in previous newsletters, but for me, most importantly, it helps build our school value of Unity.

The Secondary Schools Cadet ProgramThe NSW Rural Fire Service Secondary Schools Cadet Program is a great way for students to learn new skills, which will last them a lifetime. The program provides Year 9 and 10 students with an insight into fire safety and prevention, whilst developing practical life skills and a general appreciation of community service and volunteerism.

The aim of the program is to:

• Develop an interest in the NSW RFS and its traditions• Provide cadets with a knowledge of fire safety and

preparedness• Develop the qualities of leadership, self-discipline,

self-reliance, initiative and team work• Encourage cadets to continue service in the NSW RFS

or other community service organisations• Provide training that can contribute to NSW RFS

firefighter and other specialist training.

These skills can be used in later life, whether it’s for work or joining a volunteer rural fire brigade.

Several students from our school have participated in this program in the past and found it very worthwhile.

Any students in Years 9 or 10 who are interested can see Mr White for more information.

Kariong Mountains High School Newsletter - Term 3 - Week 2 - 2019 3

From Our Deputy Principal

Welcome to Term 3I hope that everyone had a lovely and restful break. The students have settled back into the school routine with ease, energy and a sense of calm. Looking forward to another busy and rewarding term ahead!

We are continuing to focus on uniform this term. Students must wear full school uniform every day and if for some reason this is not possible, a note from parents is required. Students can borrow jumpers and we can assist parents with second hand uniform items. It is important for all students and families to support our uniform policy because a uniform is noticed by all who see it and if we have students looking their best, it sends a strong message to future employers and the wider community in general.

Ivanna and Zoe are always in school uniform!

I would like to introduce Ms Harrison as Ms Werleman’s replacement in the CAPA faculty. She is warmly welcomed to the Year 7 family.

As we wish Ms Werlemann all the best on her journey, some of her junior students have shared their reflections below:

“I enjoyed Ms Werleman as a teacher because she had a good vibe and was really great at shading. If you were sad, she always made you feel good”Jacob Year 7

“I’m really sad Ms Werleman has left because she is a really good teacher. I hope she has fun”

Catherine Year 7

“Ms Werleman taught us the basics of art and the shading of a face. She was really good at art”

Interest GroupsInterest Groups have kicked off again for 2019. Our Year 7 & 8 students have a broad range of interests to choose from Chess with Ms Vine to Puppet Making with Ms Hickey to Podcasting for Beginners with Mr McGilvery. Mr Cartner’s interest group ‘So You Want to be a Children’s Entertainer’ will be putting on a small production for our partner primary schools.

Common Courtesy and Road RulesThe Kariong and the Mountains communities are a valuable part of our students’ world and we recognise that sometimes our students can be involved in inappropriate or disrespectful behaviour. In particular, walking to and from school and catching the school bus has sometimes been a source of unsafe behaviour. Please remind your child about following road rules and observing common courtesies when waiting for and riding on a bus.

Year 7 students are required to catch their bus from school and not along the Central Coast Hwy, when heading west.

Kariong Mountains High School Newsletter - Term 3 - Week 2 - 2019 5

SCIENCE WEEK 201950 years ago, a massive collaboration involving science, mathematics, engineering, the humanities and other areas saw humankind conquer the Moon. This event eclipsed the Mount Everest ascent in terms of what it meant for human endeavour and gave rise to the next generation of innovation and exploration.

Discovery and Science Beyond the Moon

To celebrate this event, Science Week 2019 has been assigned the theme ‘Destination Moon - More Missions, More Science.’

In the spirit of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), the Kariong Mountains Learning Community is hosting its 10th Annual Science Week celebrations at Kariong Mountains High School on Wednesday 14th August 2019. The day will culminate in a Science Expo evening featuring exhibits and activities, relevant to the lunar landing theme, from students in Years 6, 7, 8 and 9. It will also showcase the Young Scientist Award projects undertaken by students from both the high school and partner primary schools and feature an interactive Lunar Discovery room set up by the Year 10 Investigating Science class.

The expo will commence at 6pm and conclude at 7.30pm. Throughout the school day, Kariong Mountains High School will host over 200 Stage 3 primary school students, who will conduct experiments and be immersed in interactive STEAM activities from a range of KLAs. All the sessions will be conducted by our talented students in Years 9 and 10. The activities will include: robotics, rockets, pressure, meteorites, communication with light, mathematics of the very big and very small and a treasure hunt navigation activity. Everyone is welcome to join us for an evening of discovery as we celebrate 50 years of innovation, exploration and technology.

Please feel free to contact Jamie Cartner, Head Teacher Science, Kariong Mountains High School on 4340 0246 if you have any questions.

There are so many opportunities for students to engage in learning outside the classroom at our school, that it can detract from the quality of the experience due to overloading. Naturally, there are some subjects that generate more excursions than others and if your child, for example, signs on to study Marine Studies and/or Outdoor Recreation then there is an understanding that budgeting for excursions will be required.

Each year, we try and anticipate the number and timing of excursions, but unexpected events still arise. We are aware that parents would benefit from more warning and we are attempting to improve this aspect of our organisation.

Likewise, our full changeover to the Department’s financial software package has placed restrictions on us that, in the past, we could workaround. This is no longer the case. As well, we must ensure that an excursion is viable in respect to staff and cost commitments. It is for this reason that some excursions are, sadly, cancelled.

What parents need to know:

• Once an excursion has principal approval, then an emailed permission note will be sent to each parent

• Reminder emails will be sent to parents who have not committed to the excursion

• No money (or POP transaction) can be accepted after the cut-off date

• If the excursion does not get sufficient numbers by this time, then the excursion will be cancelled.

Please Note: If there are financial issues relating to attending the excursion, we may be able to negotiate a number of options, providing contact is made with the school as close to the excursion notification as possible.

Unfortunately, we usually cannot accommodate requests later than this.
