Looking forward to a great Term 3 at KMHS!

WELCOME ABOARD! KMHS proudly welcomes Nicole and Ethan, our incoming School Captains for 2020 - 2021.

Kariong Mountains High School Newsletter - Term 3 - Week 2 - 2020 2

Welcome back to Term 3,after a memorable Term 2 in which the move from lockdown to return to school saw students and staff rise to the challenge of adapting to the new reality brought on by COVID-19.

I believe that these difficult times have reinforced that our staff can and do rise to the challenge of optimising learning and wellbeing for students; that we can implement hygiene practices, which not only minimise risk of COVID, but also have reduced the seasonal colds and flus that occur during autumn and winter; that we have a range of communication strategies, which have been used effectively to provide information and enhance positivity and, finally, that we are lucky to live in this part of NSW, in a country that continues to take into consideration the health of its citizens in its decision making.

Keep Informed and Provide Up to Date DetailsAs we see from the news, the situation in any area can change from one day to the next. Schools have risk plans in place and are quickly responsive to DoE and Health directives. Please monitor your emails and Facebook regularly for news alerts.

It is therefore vital that we have your up to date details and that you (or an emergency contact) are contactable, if required. If your situation changes please let the office staff know ASAP.

Year 12 NewsAs at this point in time, we are on track with HSC Trials, major projects and performances. This means that students, who continue to work steadily and complete work to the best of their ability, will be eligible for an HSC.

NESA has partnered with ReachOut to support students, who might be experiencing stress and encourage students to follow and use #stayhealthyHSC for regular health and wellbeing updates. Of course, all students at our school are encouraged to speak with their teachers, Ms Peters and/or the school counsellor if they need any support. The HSC exam timetable is now available and can be viewed at: EDUCATION NSW: HSC Timetable - PDF format

Students considering a university option are strongly encouraged to complete the relevant early entrance schemes, as these have opened up as a very viable option for entry, in place of an ATAR, for many courses.

Three major points to communicate are:

1. Interruption to the HSC/Trials – if the school has to shut down, or a student has to isolate, then these conditions will be considered as an illness/misadventure and those procedures will be applied to ensure that no student/cohort is disadvantaged. All exams will take place following AHPPC guidelines.

2. Year 12 Graduation – we are currently still planning this for the end of Term 3, but with a best and worst case scenario built into the planning. Currently, any event will have to be recorded/livestreamed as no visitors are allowed on site for events such as this. Whatever the current conditions, we will ensure that Year 12 have a ‘graduation experience’ to mark their end of formal schooling.

3. Year 12 Formal – this is currently sitting as planned, but, again, best and worst case scenarios are being explored.

From Our Principal

What you need to knowNESA and schools are following the advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, which is also supported by NSW Health.

Your school has the authority to determine the number, type and weighting of formal school-based assessment tasks.

The written exams start on Tuesday 20 October, and the timetable is now available.

You’ll get your results on Friday 18 December, by SMS, email and online.

An overview of specific changes to the 2020 HSC is on the other side of this leaflet. If you’re impacted by any of the changes, talk to your teacher or visit the NESA website for more information, including about how your final mark will be calculated.

The NESA COVID-19 Response Committee

(with representatives from

government, Catholic and

independent schools) is carefully considering

and making any changes

needed to ensure a fair and safe 2020 HSC.

Kariong Mountains High School Newsletter - Term 3 - Week 2 - 2020 3

Welcome back to all students. I hope all of our families had a happy and safe break. I would like to refer back to my last article in regard to returning to ‘normailty.’ Our expectations of uniform, punctuality and attendance remain.

Subject SelectionYear 10 students had their subject selection interviews and are to be commended for their thoughtfulness in decision making. Subject lines will be developed in the near future and students will have some more decisions to make. Unlike some schools, we have our students dictate the curriculum rather than have a curriculum dictated to them.

I wish all students to have a great Term 3 where our values of Unity, Knowledge and Respect are on display in all classes.

From Our Deputy PrincipalNSW Curriculum Review

NSW Curriculum Review graphic illustrating goals

The reforms, announced by the government at the end of last term (https://education.nsw.gov.au/news/latest-news/biggest-education-shake-up-in-30-years), will start rolling out in 2021. All Kindergarten to Year 12 students will learn the new curriculum by 2024.

The changes are in the ‘Response to the NSW Curriculum Review’ by Professor Geoff Masters and will ensure every student is prepared and ready for their future. (Click the link above to view PDF on the school website)

The reforms are based on:• decluttering the curriculum by reducing

unnecessary subjects

• a ‘back to basics approach’ that will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science

• Year 11 and Year 12 prequalification for university and TAFE courses.

The report can be viewed here: https://nswcurriculumreview.nesa.nsw.edu.au/home/homePageContent/view

Many of the findings are in line with the decisions that we have been making with respect to our future focused learning and project based learning models. Mr Burns has taken on a leadership role in the implementation and planning for Stage 4, 2021.
