EXECUTIVE REPORT

The year 7 Project students recently had a field excursion to Lismore Square. I was

delighted to receive a phone call from a member of the public stating how immacu-

late our students looked in uniform and how positively they represented the

school.

Our talented athletes continue to shine at the all schools Nationals with Georgia

Brown playing hard in the NSW under 16 Hockey team, Tylah Crabtree swimming

back with a bag of medals from Melbourne and Bailey Crabtree pacing it out at the

Cross Country.

Four year 7 students accompanied by Mr Zsigmond and Mrs Pruess had a great

time last week visiting our partner primary schools and working with year 6 stu-

dents. We look forward to meeting with our new year 7 students at transition days

later in the year.

Year 12 students are undertaking their trial examinations this week. It can be a

difficult experience for families to support their children through the schooling

journey and students are not generally forthcoming about what they need from

parents. A rare opportunity for parents to attend a free session with Professor Adri-

an Piccoli on engagement and student learning is being held at RRHC on 18 Sep-

tember from 5.30-7pm. Having heard the former Minister for Education and now

Director of the Gonski Institute speak, I strongly encourage all parents to attend the

session (flyer is on the next page). Adrian has recently written a parent-friendly

book titled ‘12 Ways your child can get the best out of school’. A flyer for the event

is attached. If you want your child to flourish and do well, I look forward to seeing

you there!

Parent and Community Engagement for Student Learning

Parents, carers and other family members have a significant influence on a student's success at school. The more parents and carers engage in learning, the greater the chance that their children are engaged, motivated and confident learners. This late-afternoon session is designed to be attended by parents/carers and communi-ty members. Professor Adrian Piccoli, the Director of the Gonski Institute for Education will be leading this session and will talk on the topic: Too much parental involvement with schools or not enough? How the pressures

of the 21st century are changing the roles of parents.

This session will be followed by a Q & A with Professor Piccoli.

When: Wednesday 18 September 2019 5:30pm - 7:00pm

TREE PLANTING

Lismore High sits in the middle of an urban green corridor – a place for koalas, birds and other creatures to enjoy refuge in

trees and shrubbery.

Students from Years Eight, Nine, Eleven and Twelve are working to rebuild a slope on the school ground with native flora

from the local and nearby areas. Trees planted as part of the project include the local brown kurrajong, various callistemon

and lemon-scented tea trees.

Blake Hamilton, in Year Eleven, is keen to see the trees grow over the coming years. He recognises the value of rebuilding

the natural environment and its urgency in this day and age.

“It’s enjoyable having nature surround you, and other students who share the same sense of responsibility,” he says.

Over the coming years, the trees – currently knee-high – will grow to a few metres high, and accommodate furry and feath-

ery residents on the school grounds. This initiative is ground-breaking for local schools, and participating students hope the

rest of the community will follow suit.

Until these trees grow fully, students will closely supervise them to ensure their health and growth. “It’s a big responsibility

because these are the next generation of trees in the area for the next generation of people,” Hamilton says.

The responsibility of protecting the environment also links with the local indigenous heritage. The students want to ensure

the rehabilitation and protection of Bundjalung land brings further acknowledgement of the cultural importance that

comes with restoring the environment.

YEAR 8 COOKING

Year 8 cooked a two course meal: penne boscaiola and fruit pastries. Students did very well with their time management skills to get this made in a short time frame. Well done.

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY

Year 12 students are completing a unit on coffee making this term. They have opened a coffee shop on Friday mornings

where teachers can buy a coffee and food item for $2. This week they served the coffee with a double chocolate and

craisin cookie. 17 teachers ordered coffee which kept the Year 12 students very busy. Next week they will be making gluten

free orange syrup cake to serve with coffee.

YEAR 7 HOME ECONOMICS

A new class of Year 7 students started food preparation this term. Their

first lesson was to prepare, cook and serve pancakes with yoghurt and

fruit. They did a great job, especially with the presentation of their food.

YEAR 7 SEWING

Students in Year 7 work on a rotational basis through Technology Mandatory subjects. This term one of the Year 7 classes

completed their first sewing unit. Most of these students have never used a sewing machine before. They completed a

bunting, with a design of their choice. Some of the designs are captured in these photos.

GIRLS LEADERSHIP CAMP 2019

In Week 2, 31 girls from Years 8-11 spent three action packed days at the Gold Coast Recreation Centre at Tallebudgera for the annual Girls Leadership Camp. From the smiles and tears that were witnessed by teachers Mrs Pruess and Ms Myles it was evident that the camp not only enabled the girls to step outside their comfort zones but also allowed for lots of fun.

The girls rotated in two groups through various organised activities including rock climbing, the giant swing, high ropes, stand-up paddle boarding, archery and beach games. There was plenty of time for leisure activities such as swimming in the heated pool, a movie and court games under lights.

The girls didn’t go hungry because on top of their three meals each day they were given morning and afternoon tea and supper. They were also accommodated in a recently renovated section of the camp so had great facilities to use. The weather was perfect which made all the activities very enjoyable.

The camp was well organised and engaging and helped the girls build friendships and teamwork skills. If asked, all the girls would agree that the experience was challenging, exciting, relaxing and fun.

YEAR 9 CERAMIC POTS

Year 9 Visual Arts have recently completed a ceramics unit titled Shapes from the Sea. After drawing pictures of plants and

animals from the marine environment they developed a design based on one or more of their drawings. The design was

transferred to a lino square and carved out. This was them pressed into clay slabs which were moulded over various ob-

jects. Each student made a simple drape pot from one clay slab, then planned their own design for a larger pot made from

two or more clay slabs. The pots were completed using a variety of glaze colours with amazing results.

BENTLEY ART PRIZE 2019

Visual Arts students Isabel Kemp, Trisha Kemp, Daisy Thompson, Alexander Wardrop, Satria Grobert and Savan-nah Partridge recently entered the Bentley Art Prize that was held last weekend at the Bentley Hall. This local art competition becomes more popular every year and attracts many entries from the local community as well as several from across Australia.

Isabel Kemp had outstanding success winning two prizes. She came second in the High School Art Prize (Class A Years7-9) with a coloured pencil portrait of her father. She also won second prize in the Drawing Prize which this year had a theme of The Life and Times of Col Sullivan. Col was a Richmond Valley Councillor for many years and Rich-mond Valley Mayor for 12 years before passing away last year. Isabel’s pencil portrait of Col was outstanding and considering this was an open prize, Isabel should be very proud of her achievement.

Savannah Partridge was awarded a Highly Commended in the Amateur Painting Prize with monochromatic portrait. This was also an open section so Savannah’s achievement is outstanding.

The standard of work by the other students who entered was excellent and they were unlucky not to also win a prize. Roslyn Myles Visual Arts Teacher

RIVERS QLD ART GALLERY OF MODERN ART EXCURSION

At the end of Term 2 Visual Arts students from The Rivers College participated in an excursion to the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art to visit the Margaret Olley and Ben Quilty exhibitions. Students were able to see a comprehen-sive exhibition of Margaret Olley’s work including drawing and paintings from her early days as a student, her architectural studies, her nudes, still lifes and self- por-traits

One section of the exhibition was devoted to portraits of Margaret Olley by other artists, including the two portraits of her, one by William Dobell and one by Ben Quilty, that have won the Archibald Prize 63 years apart.

Margaret Olley was also a generous bene-factor, donating artworks and money to purchase artworks for public galleries throughout her life. Olley donated one mil-lion dollars towards the purchase of a Cezanne landscape, which ultimately cost $16,000,000 and this was also included in the exhibition.

Lismore High Campus students represent-ed their school in an outstanding manner, dressed in full school uniform and con-ducting themselves with excellent manners throughout the day. This excursion is an example of the extra opportunities availa-ble to Lismore High Campus students through our inclusion in The Rivers College.

CAREER NEWS

Year 12

The trial HSC exams are set down for weeks 4 and 5 of this term, 12 – 23 August. Students need to prepare them-selves for these exams as it will be an excellent snapshot of how they are tracking with their studies. It will also allow them to see what extra work they may need to complete. It is also a great opportunity to experience an examination situation and how to deal with the experience prior to their Higher School Certificate examinations starting in October.

Students should also be starting to think about applying for university via UAC or QTAC (and other states if necessary!) as well as looking at Early Entry Schemes and Scholarships at specific universities. Whilst closing dates are weeks away students and parents should be aware that this time will go quickly. Please talk to your Year 12 student about applying for university, if that is what they are choosing to do.

Those students interested in pursuing a TAFE course should check out the TAFE courses available at www.tafensw.edu.au. All the information you need about what courses are available, campus locations, commence-ment dates and costs will be available at this site. The al-ternative is to visit the student hub at the Lismore campus of TAFE, Conway street Lismore and speak with staff.

Early Entry/Scholarships

Year 12 students need to be aware of closing dates for ear-ly entry and scholarships available at Universities around the country.

Many universities offer early entry based on various crite-ria including trial exam marks, interview, essays, Principals (school) recommendation or a combination of all of these. Specific information is available from the career office or can be accessed from University websites.

Scholarships are many and varied and will be based on var-ious criteria including academic performance, geographic location, course applied for, educational disadvantage and other criteria as decided by the institution or organisation offering scholarships. Students need to access the infor-

mation and application details as soon as possible, check application closing dates and apply!

Help is available from the Career Office if needed, come in and book a time!!

Year 10 Future Options Day

On Tuesday 30 July, 47 year 10, 11 and 12 students attend-ed the Future Options Day at Trinity Catholic College. This day is organised by the Summerland Career Advisers Net-work and is designed to provide access for local high school students to various exhibitors.

This year 11 universities, TAFE, NSW Police Service, the Defence Force, numerous private institutions and job net-work providers were in attendance. The students from LHC had to visit the various exhibitors and ask questions, collect relevant information and generally look at the types of courses and careers that are available to them.

The students found the day to be a great source of infor-mation and has sparked many of them to make further en-quiries or to do a little more research into certain career/course areas.

A big thank you to Ms Miller for accompanying the stu-dents to the event.

Southern Cross University Head Start program 2020

Southern Cross University Head-Start provides an oppor-tunity for Year 11 and 12 students to gain direct entry and advanced standing into a variety of courses offered at Southern Cross University. Free from university fees, the program offers students the chance to gain a taste of uni-versity life, stimulate their interest in academic pursuits and enhance their educational performance and long-term aspirations. The program has been designed for students who have the academic capability to succeed at university. Applicants will be selected on merit, based on their aca-demic performance, a personal statement and the recom-mendation of the Principal.

Applications for the 2020 Head-Start intake are now open. Please see all the details via the following web link: www.scu.edu.au/headstart

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR AUGUST: THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY SLEEP FOR STUDENTS

Sleep is crucial not just for physical and mental well-being, but for the consolidation of learning, and to ensure you perform in all your endeavours in peak condition. The absolute last resort should be to sacrifice sleep time in order to get things done.

How much sleep is right for you? This is tricky as everyone is different. Some lucky people need only 6 hours a night, most people need about 8 hours and some people need 10 hours!

Two ways to tell if you are getting enough sleep:

How quickly do you fall asleep at night? If you fall asleep instantly that can be a sign you are not getting enough sleep, it should take 10-15 minutes to fall asleep.

How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? If you feel tired and sluggish then that can also be a sign that you need to get to bed earlier.

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF YOUR SLEEP:

Avoid caffeine (cola drinks, coffee, energy drinks, chocolate) after dinner or even better, no later than 4pm.

Organise as much as you can at night to minimise what you have to do in the morning (e.g. organise your clothes for the next day, pack your bag).

Try and have a half hour to an hour before you go to bed without computers, TV, phone or any electronic devices or homework or chatting to friends. If you can’t do that, at least put the devices on night mode or turn the brightness down.

Set up a relaxing ‘wind-down’ routine for before you go to bed. Do this same routine every night (e.g. warm shower, reading, listening to quiet music) so your brain associates these activities with bed time and sleep.

A drop in body temperature near bedtime triggers the sense that is time to go to sleep. So after a warm bath or hot shower, cool yourself down. It is also better at night to be cool rather than overheated.

Keep your room as dark and as quiet as possible at night.

When you lie in bed, start at your feet and mentally imagine relaxing each muscle as you slowly work your way up the body. Most people do not make it up to their head before they fall asleep!

In the morning open the curtains wide or go out into the sun and get lots of light to help wake your brain. Being ex-posed to lots of natural light during the day will also help the body produce the melatonin at the right time for a good sleep cycle.

A healthy breakfast will help to kick-start your body clock for the day.
