New Nations Formed after WWI
Why did Russia lose land as well?
• Treaty of Brest-Litovsk– Signed between Germany and Russia when Russia
left WWI early– Gave up territorial claims to Germany, which were
then created into new states: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania
* Creation of an independent Poland
- Germany returns Alsace-Loraine to France
- Had previously gained this territory in the Franco-Prussian War
The Mandate System
• Central Powers forced to give up their colonial holdings
• Ottoman Empire only retains Turkey, carved up and lost land in Southwest Asia– Created mandates rather than independent
nations– Britain: Palestine and Iraq– France: Syria and Lebanon
