Congratulations on being admitted to Indiana University, a university

rich in tradition, academic excellence, opportunities, and resources.

The Office of First Year Experience Programs is pleased to welcome

you to the IU family. Please read this booklet carefully and share it

with your parents and family members. We’ve included important

orientation information especially for them on Page 6. We look forward

to meeting you at New Student Orientation.

New Student rientation

Thechallengesandopportunitiesthatlieaheadareenormous—intellectually,emotionally,academically,andsocially.NewStudentOrientationisIU’stwo-daysummerprogramthatisrequiredforallstudents,easesyour

transitiontocollegelifeandenhancesyourcollegeexperiences,givingyouanindispensableheadstartonyourIUjourney.

NewStudentOrientationtakesplacefrommid-JunethroughlateJuly.Whenyoumakeyouronlinereservation,youwillbeabletoselectdatesthatwillbeavailablebasedonyourintendedmajor.Duringyourtwodaysoncampus,weassemblemanyofthepeople,services,andresourcesthatwillhelpyousucceedoverthenextfouryears.Fromthemomentyousetfootonthisbeautifulcampus,youcanbegintodiscoverthemanyopportunitiesavailableatIU.Thereissomuchmorethanjustsigningupforclasses—you’llbeonyourwaytobecominganIUHoosier.

New Student Orientation features both academic and social components, including:• ConnectingwithIUpeopleandresources,learningwhatIU

expectsfromstudents,andfindingthesupportyou’llneed.• Academicadvising,first-semesterscheduleplanning,and

courseregistration.

StartinginlateMarch,we’llbesendinginvitationstoNewStudentOrientation.Admittedstudentswhohavepaidthe$100enrollmentdeposit(dueMay1)willreceivethisinvitationinthemail;itincludesreservationinformationforNewStudentOrientation.Besuretopayyourenrollmentdepositatintenttoenroll.indiana.edu.

Explore Your Financial Aid Options

Theonlywaytoknowifyouqualifyforaidistoapply,andtheapplicationprocessisfreeandonlineatwww.fafsa.ed.gov.TheFAFSA(FreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid)maybefiledanytimeafterJanuary1forthe2011-2012schoolyear.You’llwanttofilebyMarch10toensureyou’reconsideredforthemaximumamountoffinancialaidavailable.Ifyouhavequestionsaboutfinancialaid,findcontactinformationfortheOfficeofStudentFinancialAssistanceatwww.indiana.edu/~sfa.

New Student Orientation is required for all new students. You must attend New Student

Orientation before you can register for classes.4

New Student Orientation Option In The Fall

StudentswhoareabsolutelyunabletoattendNewStudentOrientationthissummerwillattendinAugust,justpriortofallsemester.Remember,whileyouwillbeabletocreateacompleteclassscheduleinthefall,manysectionsandsomecoursesmayfillduringthesummerprogram.Yourattendanceinthesummerprogramisstronglyencouraged.

anexemptiontothecampushousingrequirement,youcanrequestacopyoftheschedulebyemailingfye@indiana.eduinAugust.TheschedulewillalsobeonlineinearlyAugustat fye.indiana.edu.

Before Fall SemesterIUBeginningsWhynotstartyourcollegeexperienceinauniqueway?IUBeginningsadventuresconnectyoutoIUstudents,IUculture,andtheBloomingtoncommunitythroughoutdooradventures(suchaskayakingorcamping),communityserviceprojects,ortripstoseegreatplaysandmusicals.Joinothersinthisexcitingopportunity.IUBeginningstakesplaceAugust19-24,anddetailsregardingeachtrip,suchasitineraries,canbefoundatfye.indiana.edu/iubeginnings.

collegeexperience,weoffersessionsdesignedespeciallyforparentsthatinformyouaboutIU’sresources,programs,andsupportservices.During NewStudentOrientation,youwillattendsomesessionswithyourstudent,andyou’llattendsomesessionsjustwithotherparentsofnewstudents.

Weunderstandthat“family”doesnotmeanonly“parents.”Guardians,spouses,andothersignificantsupportersarealwayswelcometoattendNewStudentOrientationwiththeirstudents.However,pleasenotethatNewStudentOrientationisnotdesignedtoaccommodateyoungchildren.

AlthoughIndianaUniversitycommunicatesprimarilywithyourstudent,wetaketherelationshipbetweentheuniversity,parents,andstudentsseriously.ItwillbehelpfultoknowwhatyourstudentwillbereceivingandwhatheorsheneedstodobeforeNewStudentOrientationandthestartofclasses.Pleasereviewthe“CountdowntoIU”checklistonthebackcovertoensurenothingisoverlooked.

Parent Information Pleaseresistthetemptationtomaketheonlinereservationforyourstudent.Becauseyourstudentwillneedtosetuppasswordsandcarefullyreadthrougheachstep,it’simportantthatheorshecompletesthisprocess.Whilesigningup,yourstudentwillhavetheopportunitytoprovideuswithyouremailaddresssothatwecansendyouacopyoftheconfirmationemail.Encourageyourstudenttodothissowemaykeepintouchwithyoutoo.

Finally,besuretomarkyourcalendarfortheWelcomeWeekFreshmanInductionCeremonyinAugust.Youareencouragedtojoinyourstudentforthiscelebrationandthepicnicthatfollows!
