The landscape surrounding the Student Union will include a pleasant outdoor seating area for the dining center. On the north side of the center, there will be a new amphitheater of seat walls and grass terraces that lead down from the upper quad to the new park, with a new walkway and a handicap accessible path across the slope. Students will be able to enjoy lunch under the dogwood trees or fellowship at an afternoon concert.

Much of the new Student Union’s first floor will be dedicated to the new cafeteria which will feature a large, double-height dining hall that overlooks views of a campus park. Students will also be able to enjoy a more private meal in the large or small private dining rooms for special events.

The 400-seat cafeteria will be the primary dining location, providing healthy and versatile meal options. Upstairs will also include alternative options with high-quality fast food and beverages from a fully functioning Starbucks, Chick-fil-A Express, and a traditional grill.

Downstairs is where the campus store and post office will be located, as well as a lounge area around the central staircase. The new bookstore will face the football field, which will be a convenient destination on game days for parents and visitors looking to purchase the latest MU gear.

“The Berns” is the main upstairs portion of the Student Union. With the renovation plan, it will continue to be the go-to place for many student activities and after-hours student programming. The Student Union is a centralized location with resources and meeting space for clubs and organizations. It also houses the Student Affairs suite, which includes many important student service departments. For entertainment and relaxation, some of the features in Berns will include functional and attractive lounges; and a state-of-the-art, multipurpose programming room. The Student Involvement Center and the Center for Student Success will also be located here.

Centrally located between the main academic quadrangle and the back part of campus the Student Union is a hinge point that most students pass through several times a day. Along the western edge of the upper level, there will be a shady arcade structure and a new fountain with gently moving water running parallel to the upper seating area.
