Johnson provided the keynote address at the 1964 dedication. The keynote at the June 14, 2014 commencement celebration – which took place at Angel Stadium of Anaheim – was provided by President Barack Obama.

WELCOME TO UCIFifty years ago, in October 1965, when the University of California, Irvine, opened its doors and held its first classes, our founders had the ambitious goal that one day this would be a world-class university. Today, that vision is realized in myriad faculty, student, and alumni achievements that are illuminating new possibilities in our state and around the globe.

UC Irvine is consistently among the world’s best universities, with national rankings and achievements in the sciences, arts, humanities, medicine, and management. Three UC Irvine professors have won Nobel Prizes for their contributions to the advancement of human knowledge. Our alumni have won Pulitzer Prizes and Olympic medals, and are leaders in business, the arts, science, and education. In all walks of life, graduates from UCI make a difference.

Our campus has all the advantages of a large, dynamic research university, with many opportunities for students to be involved in undergraduate research. By the time they are seniors, 91 percent of UCI students have participated in faculty research. And with the circular layout of our campus surrounding beautiful Aldrich Park, our tight-knit community thrives with the friendly feel of a small college. Our academics and community combine to create an exceptional undergraduate experience. UC Irvine draws students looking for world-class faculty, cutting-edge academic programs, award-winning housing and facilities, a vibrant campus life, and the opportunity to live and study among the best and brightest minds in academia.

UCI is the ideal place to study the past, enjoy the present, and shape our future. I invite you to explore all we have to offer and to challenge yourself to shine brighter.

Sincerely,

Howard GillmanChancellorwww.admissions.uci.edu

4. Submit your official transcripts and test scores. Official final high school and/or college transcripts, as well as all official final test scores such as SAT, ACT, SAT Subject, AP, IB must be sent to the UCI Admissions Office. Official college transcripts for any courses taken during summer 2016 must be sent to the UCI Admissions Office and received by September 15, 2016. International students are encouraged to request official transcripts early because it may take some time for schools outside of the U.S. to send your official transcripts to UCI. Failure to provide official transcripts may jeopardize your enrollment. (Note: students who did not attend four years at a high school in which the language of instruction is English must submit official test scores for an exam that clears the English Language Proficiency requirement by July 15, 2016. See www.admissions.uci.edu/prospective_international/language_proficiency.html for means to clear this requirement).

5. Take placement test(s).Many important courses require placement test results in order for freshmen, and in some cases transfer students, to register. In particular, writing courses often require a test result for registration. Placement testing is offered between June and September and is coordinated with Orientation dates. Visit the Academic Testing Center website at www.testingcenter.uci.edu to obtain information about tests, testing dates, and a guide to which placement tests you may need.

6a. FRESHMEN Attend Student-Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) or International Student Orientation (ISO).

New student orientation is mandatory for all freshmen. Please note that if you are an international student, you may choose from two orientation programs.

The Student-Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) is a two-day-one-night orientation for new first year domestic and international students offered multiple times between mid-July and mid-August. Academic advising, course enrollment, campus tours, social activities, and meeting current and new UCI students are included in the SPOP experience. SPOP also includes an optional parent/guardian component for an additional fee. A Spanish language parent program will be offered at least once during the summer.

For international students who are unable to attend SPOP, we offer the International Student Orientation (ISO); a three-day-two-night program that offers many of the same elements as SPOP, but is tailored to the unique needs of

Page 9: NEW STUDENTS WELCOME GUIDE - UCI Admissions › pdf › new_student_welcome_guide · strength that comes from leadership and character excellence — the traits of UCI Anteaters

7

international students who have little or no experience in the United States. ISO is offered once in September.

While ISO is an option, international freshmen who atended high school in the U.S. are strongly encouraged to attend SPOP if they are available.

In order to enroll in courses for fall quarter, you will need to register for orientation. If you are unable to travel to Irvine during the summer to attend an orientation program, you must request an Orientation Exception. The Orientation Exception Request Form will be available online when your orientation reservation window opens. The date and time of your reservation window will be sent to you via email in early May.

Please visit the orientation website at www.students.uci.edu/orientation for more information.

6b. TRANSFER STUDENTS Meet with your Academic Advisor and attend Transfer Success or the Transfer Student-Parent Orientation Program (TSPOP).

Meeting with your academic advisor is required to enroll in courses. Please contact your advisor to schedule an appointment. Visit www.admissions.uci.edu/counseling.

Transfer Success is a one-day orientation program specifically designed for new students transferring to the university. The program will be offered twice in July; attendance is optional, however we hope you will join us! Our goal is for your transfer experience at UCI to be positive and enriching, academically and socially.

At Transfer Success you will be able to meet in an informal setting with other new transfer students and also interact with currently enrolled UCI students.

Page 10: NEW STUDENTS WELCOME GUIDE - UCI Admissions › pdf › new_student_welcome_guide · strength that comes from leadership and character excellence — the traits of UCI Anteaters

8

TSPOP is a new two-day-one-night program for transfer students interested in a more comprehensive introduction to the university. TSPOP includes all the elements of Transfer Success plus a wide range of informational workshops and opportunities to make friends with new and continuing UCI students. TSPOP is also optional and will take place once during the summer.

Transfer Success and TSPOP do not include academic advising. All transfer students are required to make an appointment for academic advising with the school of their major. Appointments will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration for Transfer Success and TSPOP will begin in early July. Watch your email for information on the date and time reservations will open. To register for Transfer Success or TSPOP and to obtain program details visit www.students.uci.edu/orientation.

7. Pay fees.Check your ZOT account online to see your registration fees and other charges, as well as any financial aid, waivers or payments credited to your account at https://zotaccount.uci.edu. Be sure to pay the amount due by the fee deadline to avoid late charges and dropped courses.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE ALSO ADVISED TO DO THE FOLLOWING:8. Mail your Confidential Financial Statement (CFS) with signatures and dates, and financial documents. The freshman deadline to mail the CFS is May 1, 2016; the transfer deadline to mail the CFS is June 1, 2016. The CFS and financial documents postmarked after the deadline will result in the delay of processing the I-20. If you do not need to apply for the I-20, proceed to step 10.

You will need an F-1 student visa to study in the U.S. if you do not have a visa status that allows you to attend school in the U.S. The I-20 will allow you to apply for the F-1 student visa. If you are already in the U.S. with F-1 student visa status, you must request an I-20.

Go to your MyAdmission account on the Admissions website at www.admissions.uci.edu to access the CFS. Follow the instructions, print the entire CFS, obtain required signatures with dates, and mail the signed CFS and any financial documents, including current bank letter/proof of funding to:
