Welcome to Newport News, where great things are happening! First off, we have not one, but TWO golden anniversaries to celebrate in 2016... Newport News Park is celebrating its 50th birthday, as is the Virginia Living Museum!

Did you know that Newport News Park was developed in 1966 from a

watershed that was created around Lee Hall Reservoir to protect the cleanliness of the water? At 7,711 acres, Newport News Park is one of the largest city-run parks in the United States. Visit the park for some gifts of nature and other treasures you’d never expect to find in the third largest city in Virginia!

The Virginia Living Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a year of special

events and exhibits. Highlights include a display of larger-than-life animatronic bugs through mid-April, followed by a hugely popular dinosaur exhibit returning in the summer. In the fall, a permanent outdoor “Dinosaur Discovery Trail” will open.

Returning in mid-March for its second year is the Newport News One City Marathon. Runners will begin their journey in the stunning setting of Newport News Park. From

there the next 26.2 miles will include the very best Newport News has to offer, finishing (and fittingly so) at the Newport News Victory Arch.

Stay with us in Newport News and enjoy everything we have to offer. Let our knowledgeable travel counselors help you plan your stay in our hometown by calling 888-493-7386 or visit us online at www.newport-news.org

Insider Tips Meet the

Todd FamilyJason and Dianne Todd live in the “Warwick on the James” neighborhood of Newport News. Jason, president of Flat-Out Events, is an avid runner and lover of all sports. Dianne, a paralegal, is taking a break from the office to be a stay-at-home mom to their two sons, Sean and Joel. Passionate about nutrition and natural health, Dianne is enrolled in a health coaching certification program.

Outdoor fun:We love getting out in our neighborhood, which is family-friendly and has lots of old charm! We enjoy going on walks and having an occasional picnic at Lions Bridge. As a runner, Jason visits areas all over the city by foot, especially Hilton Village, Mariners’ Museum Park, City Center and Port Warwick. And, last but not least, sledding near Lions Bridge when it snows is a great time!

Rainy day fun:Keeping two young kids occupied is always important, so Patrick Henry Mall is a nice way to kill some time. Looking through the toy aisles at Toys “R” Us and Target is always on the top of our son’s list. We also enjoy children’s story time at Main Street Library and Barnes & Noble.

Eating out:Nawab Indian Cuisine is at the top of our list for its excellent lunch buffet. Indulge, a new French bakery in Hilton Village, is also delicious! Aroma’s coffee shop is a go-to for relaxing with a cup of coffee and catching up on some work. Finally, we are so excited about the new Tech Center! Thrilled to have one of our faves, P.F. Chang’s, in town.

Family fun:Every July 4th, we love to walk down to the Hilton Pier and join other neighborhood families to watch the fireworks. We’re also looking forward to seeing a play at the Peninsula Community Theatre. We enjoy summer concerts at City Center, Port Warwick and Mariners’ Museum Park. Dianne loves going to the local farmers’ markets at CNU and City Center in the spring and summer.

Special occasions:We like to dine at the quaint Circa 1918, which is right down the street from our home. Bonefish Grill is another nice restaurant for special occasions. Because Jason’s job takes up many weekends, a favorite post-event Monday tradition is breakfast at Cracker Barrel. For visiting friends and family:Usually it’s a nice meal at one of the restaurants we’ve mentioned. Lions Bridge and the view of the James River is a nice way to end our day.

Don’t miss:The One City Marathon, of course!

To relax:For Jason, it's hitting the streets for a run. He’s been really happy to see all of the new sidewalks going in around town. As a family, we enjoy long walks around our neighborhood and love seeing families out and about. We love to grab an ice cream treat at Maggie Moo’s and take a stroll around the City Center fountain.

Birthday party fun:Birthday parties at My Gym in Kiln Creek and Rebounderz are always a good time. We also like to meet up with our Hilton Presbyterian Preschool friends for parties in the neighborhood.

Favorite fests:Hollydazzle and the Newport News Greek Festival. When the boys were younger, Celebration in Lights was their favorite event.

Arts scene:Ferguson Center for the Arts and Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.

Favorite attractions:The Virginia Living Museum for its animals and its special traveling exhibits. We also enjoy The Mariners’ Museum and

Park/USS Monitor Center.

Retail therapy:Patrick Henry Mall and Jefferson Commons, and we can now add the Marketplace at Tech Center, which has stores that were commonly located in other cities.

Favorite historic sites:The Victory Arch in downtown Newport News and the Battle of Dam No.1 at Newport News Park.

Why Newport News:As far as school is concerned, the magnet program is awesome because once the child is selected, siblings are automatically accepted, and transportation is provided as needed. The best thing about living and working in Newport News is most everything we do is centrally located within the city limits.

Ed and George’s Recommendations:For seafood? Mike’s Place (now called Rick & Libby’s) for the best corn

muffins, fish, oysters, shrimp etc., and the burgers are great, too!

For steak?Steve’s Steakhouse. Their Greek salad and Delmonico steaks and fries are wonderful, and the prices are great, too!

For a holiday meal?Schlesinger’s Chophouse has great buffets during the holidays with a wide selection of choices.

For nighttime fun? Musicals, dance performances, shows, symphonies, etc., at the Ferguson Center for the Arts.

For shopping?TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, Stein Mart, the Jefferson Flea Market, and, of course, Walmart.

For sunsets?Huntington Park Beach and around Leeward Marina, where the sunsets are magnificent.

For lunch?Cheddar's! The onion rings are awesome, and they make the best Rum Runner. Also, Rocky Mount BBQ.

For fishing? James River where we catch croakers, spot, rock fish and an occasional flounder. James River Bridge Fishing Pier is great for visitors who don’t have access to a boat.

For visiting friends and family? Ferguson Center for the Arts, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, The Mariners’ Museum and Park/USS Monitor Center, the Virginia Living Museum, shopping at all the new stores, fishing in the James River, and eating crabs on the deck of the Crab Shack.

Museums? The Virginia War Museum and The Mariners’ Museum, which unveils our maritime history from the Battle of the Monitor & Merrimack to the history of Newport News Shipbuilding to a great collection of small craft from around the world!

Best time to visit?Spring, summer and fall – the weather is beautiful and the temperatures are mild … for fishing!

Why Newport News? Access to the water and fishing, the magnificent views of the James River and the Hampton Roads harbor, the history of our city and the shipyard, along with its convenient coastal location. It’s a beautiful city with so much to see and do!

Day One Start your day with our Art &

Sculpture Driving Tour, which showcases more than two dozen works of outdoor art throughout Newport News.

Take a tour of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, an affiliate of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Don’t forget to stop at the art center’s gift shop, called The Gallery Shop, which features unique gifts created by local and regional artists.

Grab lunch at TASTE, which features local artists’ works on its walls, many of which are for sale.

Visit the Falk Gallery of Art at Christopher Newport University, the main gallery on campus, which hosts six exhibitions a year.

Unleash your inner artist at Wine & Design, where all supplies are provided and you can bring your own favorite snacks and beverages.

Indulge in fine dining at Pearl 703, a farm-to-fork gem of a restaurant.

Day Two Create a beautiful masterpiece of

your own at the Starving Artist Studio in Port Warwick.

Marvel at the folk art paintings of life-size wall murals drawn on scrap material at the Anderson Johnson Gallery inside Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.

Treat yourself to lunch at nearby Fin Seafood Restaurant, where every entrée itself is a work of art.

Step back to the mid-Victorian period at Lee Hall Mansion, one of the last remaining 19th century Italianate structures on the Virginia Peninsula.

Enjoy an authentic Italian meal at Tuscany Ristorante Italiano.

Catch a touring Broadway show or a concert at Christopher Newport University’s spectacular Ferguson Center for the Arts, designed by the world-renowned architect, I.M. Pei (best known for creating the glass and steel pyramid for the Louvre).

Prior to the start of the show, wander through CNU’s Ferguson Hall Gallery, which showcases several annual exhibits of students’ artwork.

Day Three Travel through the Hampton Roads

Bridge-Tunnel to Norfolk to check out the Chrysler Museum of Art.

Cross the Elizabeth River to Portsmouth to see the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center.

Head down to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.

Enjoy an intimate dining experience at Terrapin Restaurant in Virginia Beach, recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award since 2008.

Return to Newport News to catch a show at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Historic Hilton Village.

Paint the Town – For art and culture lovers, Newport News is home to a number of galleries, live performance venues, historic homes with unique architecture, and award-winning restaurants. We invite you to sample our “Paint the Town” itinerary:

Nature Lovers – Whether you have children or not, you can be a kid again with plenty of options for outdoor fun in Newport News. Our city boasts more than 30 parks, some with historical significance, and all with the allure of nature.

Day One: Get up close and personal with Mother Nature Get your blood flowing and breathe

the fresh morning air with a walk on the Noland Trail in Mariners’ Museum Park. Choose a quick loop or do the entire 5-mile wooded, lakeside trail.

Just up the road is the wondrous Virginia Living Museum. This popular attraction, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary, features hundreds of animals native to Virginia.

While you’re there, you can go star-gazing even when the sun’s out at the Abbitt Planetarium.

Spend the afternoon walking, swimming, watching the action at the fishing pier, or just relaxing at Huntington Park Beach.

From there, stroll a short way and literally smell the roses at the city’s lovely Rose Garden.

Finish the day on the pier at Riverview Farm Park and watch the deep orange sun sink slowly into the sparkling James River.

Day Two: Get out and play in 30+ parks! Newport News Park, also

celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, provides a nature lover’s haven on the wooded shores of Lee Hall reservoir.

Be sure to explore the fascinating flora and fauna found at Newport News Park’s Discovery Center.

Ride your bike through Harwood's Mill Park for an exciting mountain bike trail.

Set your spirit free on the water! Rent a jon boat or paddle boat at Newport News Park – or bring your own canoe or kayak.

Test your skills at the ever-popular disc golf course at Newport News Park or go on an adventurous geo-caching excursion in the woods.

Grab some takeout and enjoy a picnic lunch with a view at any of our picturesque parks.

Work it off with rollerblading, cycling or jogging.

Be sure to treat your kids to the ultimate in playground enjoyment at Fort Fun in Huntington Park, along the James River. Other playgrounds abound in Deer Park, Stoney Run Park, and King-Lincoln Park to name just a few.

Getting Here

Our location in the heart of Coastal Virginia means we’re less than 400 miles from many major U.S. cities, including Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.

Amtrak offers daily direct service from Washington, D.C., while the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport currently includes regular flights on Delta and US Airways/American. More flights are available at both Norfolk International and Richmond International Airports.

Reaching Newport News is simple. Whether you take the scenic route, use the interstate highway network, reach us by plane or train, you’ll find us “right in the middle of everything.” Visit www.newport-news.org for an online interactive map or www.map.visitcoastalvirginia.com for a map of the region or request a larger version of this map by calling 888-493-7386.
