Welcome to Schott’s world of music! I am pleased to present you with just a few of the latest items from the different areas of our extensive publishing programme.
A new publication, ‘Vuelvo al sur’ published by Boosey & Hawkes, proves that tango is still alive. It includes 10 great pieces by the grand-master of Tango himself, Astor Piazzolla, arranged for accordion. Boosey & Hawkes also offers exciting new publications for choirs, for example, ‘Te Deum’ by Karl Jenkins, which recently received its first performance.
And following the success of ‘Concerto Classics’ for Trumpet, Boosey and Hawkes havenow brought out an additional three books to add to the series: for violin, flute and forclarinet. The ‘Concerto Classics’ series gives intermediate students the opportunity toexplore some of the most important and influential concertos in their instrument’s repertoire.
From our Schott London publishing programme, building on the success of our ExploringJazz series, I am proud to present two further books in the series: Exploring Jazz for flute, saxophone and for trumpet. Furthermore, accordion players will be pleased to hear thatwe have made available a selection of eastern European folk tunes as part of the SchottWorld Music series.
And finally, for lovers of Russian music, our publishing partner Balaieff has more romanticmusic in store for you from the ‘Belle Epoque Russe’ series. The instrumentation, for violaor cello and piano, is refreshingly original - I hope you enjoy it.
With very best wishes from Schott Music publishers,Yours sincerely,
Dr. Peter Hanser-StreckerPublisher

Musical Jokes28 Easy Piano Pieces for Children
The third volume in the ‘PianoPictures’ series is entirely dedica-ted to the question of whetherthere really are jokes and fun inmusic and if so, what it actually isthat we laugh about? Sometimesit is the title of the piece thatmakes us laugh, as in ‘Two FunnyAunties Argued’ (Khatchaturian).Or the fun is hidden in the move-ments of the music: the suddenalternations between ‘funny’ and‘sad’ of ‘clowns’ (Heller andKabalevski), acrobatic jumps in‘Musette’ or interesting move-ments like the glissando beinglikened to the buttering of a pieceof bread (Mozart). And evenmusic-making itself can be fun,e.g. the jump-like crossing of thehands in ‘Flohwalzer’ or playing atbreakneck speed.

Classics meet Jazz 214 famous classical pieces, original + jazzy arrangement
14 famous themes from musichistory, from Bach to Offenbach, each with its own jazzy interpreta-tion – just as in Vol. 1. This editionshows that ‘classical music’ andjazz are not that distant from oneanother after all. Just imagineGrieg’s Piano Concerto played ona bandoneon – and you have gotthe perfect tango! Brahms’Hungarian Dance No. 1 is alsoideal as a salsa (‘Hungarian SalsaNo.1’). Schubert’s trout suffers aterrible fate, here it may continueto live in a lively ragtime (‘FishRag’). With Mozart, the night ismerry and friendly. But ‘A BlackNight Music’ shows its dark side.
The accompanying CD providesexamples and suggestions as tohow all of these pieces can beinterpreted.

Ravel, Maurice
Menuet sur lenom d’HaydnEdited from the sources byJochen ReutterWith a preface by Theo HirsbrunnerFingerings and Notes onInterpretation by Peter Roggenkamp
Maurice Ravel wrote his ‘Menuetsur le nom d’Haydn’ in September1909 to commemorate theViennese classicist who died 100years before on 31 May 1809.The piece was published for thefirst time in connection with an‘Hommage à Joseph Haydn’ in theRevue musicale to which severalcontemporaries of Ravel contribu-ted as well. The original edition, still in use today, was publishedshortly after. A comparison withthe composer’s autograph, cur-rently in France and privatelyowned, clearly shows the errorsand shortcomings of the two firsteditions so that Ravel’s musicalintentions can now be publishedin full measure for the first time inthe present new critical edition.

DoumkaScène rustique russe, Op. 59(1886)
Edited by Thomas Kohlhase
Tchaikovsky composed the Russianrural scene ‘Doumka’ in lateFebruary 1886. In Tchaikovsky’sOp. 59, the elegiac andante canta-bile forms the framework of thefast middle section in which briefformulaic thoughts, newly variedand increasing in virtuosic intensi-ty, display fireworks of pianisticbrilliance.
Being his only ‘Morceau deConcert’, this piece occupies aspecial place among the pianoworks of Tchaikovsky. As a pianistwho rarely gave concerts andoccasionally complained about thelack of interest from the keyboardtitans of his time (Franz Liszt,Hans von Bülow and the brothersAnton and Nikolaj Rubinstein) inhis music. Tchaikovsky certainlyregarded the piece as a chance tomake his music known outside ofRussia. So the French subtitle ofthe piece may rather be under-stood as a concession to theFrench audience.

Silvestrov, Valentin
BagatellesOp. 1 – 5 (2005–2006)
In this edition, Silvestrov hascompiled for the first time fivecycles from a multitude of‘Bagatelles’, his favourite genre inrecent years – and even recordedthem on CD (EDM).
What mainly interests him in thebagatelles is the melody, thoughnot as something complete butrather as an answer to ‘momenta-rily’ flashing intonations, calls, motifs which the composer can nolonger get out of his ear. Theshort form makes it possible tocapture the ‘moment’ or ‘momentmusical’ as such and ‘bring it to ahalt’ (Verweile doch! Du bist soschön!... according to Goethe).
Thus, the harmless miniatures arenot just mere nothings (fr. baga-telle = trivial matters, trifles),they become – as Silvestrov saidhalf in jest – ‘sublime trivia inwhich there is nothing except …music.’ (Tatjana Frumkis)

Cadenzasto the Piano Concertos (1923)No. 1 C major, No. 2 B major, No. 3 C minor, No. 4 G major
Erwin Schulhoff composed hiscadenzas for Ludwig van Beet -hoven’s Piano Concertos No. 1-4(no independent cadenza is inten-ded for Piano Concerto No. 5) inBerlin in 1923. That means theywere written at the same time ashis Concerto for piano and smallorchestra Op. 43, which combinesimpressionism and jazz and canbe regarded as the first ‘jazz’piano concerto in music history. The present cadenzas, however,do not show any influences of jazzbut follow entirely the classicalpiano concerto tradition in a waywhich is virtuosic, and yet compa-ratively easy to play.

Selected PianoWorksEdited by Maria Zeidler-Kröll
Martinu’s music shows manyinfluences and styles: the folkmusic of his Bohemian-Moravianhome country, (neo-) Impressionistimpressions of his French fellowcomposers Debussy and Ravel, modern influences of Stravinsky, the Group de Six but also of jazzmusic. His style is characterisedby elaborate rhythms, pushingmelodies as well as harmonieswhich mainly remain in the tonalspace and are enriched with tonalsharpening and polytonality.
The compiled pieces, composedbetween 1913 and 1936, give anoverview of the stylistic variety ofMartinu’s tonal language, forminga multi-faceted overall picture. The pieces are not arranged inchronological order but in order ofincreasing difficulty.

Monogramme14 mood pieces (1998–2003)
Edited by Reinhold Dusella
Between 1995 and 2003 the com-poser York Höller from Colognecreated 14 highly demandingpiano pieces which are not onlytone pictures, but also composi-tional reflections on people closeto him. They are ‘monograms’because Höller often chooses thetone letters of the dedicatees as abasis of his tonal form. Thus, thoughts of the composersKarlheinz Stock hausen, HansWerner Henze and Pierre Boulezfor example become a formallypowerful, sometimes pensive dia-logue by means of internal con-nections, and the last movement‘Scanning’ with its combination ofall these thoughts becomes a realfinale.

In 1953, the year of the worldpremiere, the press summed upthe gist of the organ piece by thethen not-yet 30-year-old compo-ser as follows: ‘Monumentallypowerful, atonal chord patterns inthe introduction, a linearly lyricalarioso and an extraordinarilywitty fugue, presented with abso-lute virtuosity, make this musicalwork of a modern young compo-ser accessible to the listeners in aconvincing and impressive way –even on this small organ.’

Bach, Johann Sebastian
Sonaten undPartitenfor Violin soloEdited from the sources, Notes onInterpretation by Dagmar Glüxam
Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas forViolin Solo are among the mostfamous masterpieces of theirkind. Unlike the closely relatedSuites for Violoncello Solo, theviolin solos have survived in anautograph manuscript of the com-poser on the basis of which alonea largely reliable musical text isavailable. However, this manus-cript is a copy of previous draftcopies or even further fair copiesof the composer. Wiener UrtextEdition uses an early copyist’scopy from Köthen as a secondarysource which has not been valuedvery highly as a source until now.Despite its closeness to the extantautograph, one cannot rule outthe possibility that this copy mightbe traced back to another originalmanuscript by Bach. In the Notesof Interpretation, Dagmar Glüxamexplains the relationship betweenthe musical-rhetorical contents ofBach’s musical text and their ade-quate performance.

From Ayrshirefor violin and orchestra (2007)
Composed at the request ofNicola Benedetti, the work’s titleplays on the common link of bothMacMillan and Benedetti’sAyrshire backgrounds. In the firstof the two short movements thefolksong ‘Ca’ the Yowes’, thoughhardly present, hovers like a sub-liminal message, melodically andharmonically. The violin line is lyri-cal and melancholy with delicatesustained sounds in the accompa-niment. After the reflective firstmovement the second movementprovides a brief but wild contrast, being fast, and based on Celticreel forms. Recorded onUniversal/DG (476 3159) byNicola Benedetti and the Academyof St Martin-in-the-Fields, conduc-ted by James MacMillan.

for violin and timpanis
Written by Christian Tetzlaff, oneof the most interesting and mostversatile violinists of his genera-tion, this cadenza for Beethoven’sViolin Concerto for violin and tim-panis is published for the firsttime.
There are no cadenzas for thisfamous violin concerto by thecomposer himself. Beethoven onlywrote cadenzas for the laterpiano concerto version. As a spe-cial feature, he uses the timpanitogether with the solo instrument. This is an obvious thing to do asthey open the work with the sim-ple four-note motif and dominatethe entire first movement. Tetzlaffhas clearly been succesful withhis adaption of these cadenzasfrom the piano version to the violin concerto.

Gariboldi, Giuseppe
20 Petites Etudesfor flute, Op. 132Edited by Stefan Albrecht
The ‘Petites Etudes’ are of similarmelodic charm to Gariboldi’s ‘Etudes mignonnes’. With a littlemore virtuoso with regard to thefingering technique and articula-tion, they could be seen as a con-tinuation of his ‘mignonnes’.
In this volume, the use of dyna-mics and the articulation descri-bed in great detail are essentialto the interpretation of the étu-des. Performed accurately, theyfreshen the sound and sharpenthe listener’s perception especial-ly through the constantly varyingexecution of similar motifs. Ifpractised accordingly, the ‘PetitesEtudes’ can improve technicalskills considerably.

The Undine Sonata for flute andpiano is one of the few works bythe composer Carl Reinecke whichis regularly performed even today, and is at the same time one of thefew Romantic repertoire piecesfor transverse flute. Although notobviously programme music atfirst glance, and sometimes evenquestioned as such by contempo-raries, the work nevertheless fallsback on the Undine subject whichwas a popular opera theme in the19th century. The Wiener UrtextEdition now presents a new publi-cation of the work which closelyfollows the text of the original edi-tion (unfortunately, manuscriptsources are not extant). Thenotes on interpretation follow thetracks of the extra-musical pro-gramme, aiming to bring the workand its interpretative understan-ding into close connection withthe Undine subject.

Turlough O’Carolan (1670–1738)is regarded as one of the lastgreat harp-players of Ireland andseems to be surrounded by analmost mystical aura. Numerousanecdotes exist which testify to astrong personality and a tremen-dous musical talent as well asenormous self-confidence. Unlikeany other, he knew how to combi-ne old Irish music with ItalianBaroque music, creating nume-rous compositions about 200 ofwhich have survived. 16 of themhave been chosen and arrangedby Patrick Pföß for the delightfulinstrumentation of two flutes andalto flute. In case there is no altoflute available, a separate violon-cello part is available instead.

Ysaÿe, Eugene
Trio ‘Le Londres’for 2 violins and violaEdited by Nandor Szederkenyi
The Belgian composer, conductorand violinist Eugène Ysaÿe (1858–1931) studied with Wieniawsky inBrussels and took numerous tripsas a soloist, particularly to theUSA where he worked as a con-ductor in Cincinnati among others. He was among the great virtuososof his time. Many great composersdedicated their works to him, suchas César Franck who was a closefriend of his, Debussy, Saint-Saëns,Elgar, and Fauré. His compositio-nal œuvre comprises mainly sona-tas and concertos for violin, butalso numerous small-scale works.
His trio ‘Le Londres’ was original-ly conceived as a sonata for 2 vio-lins for his pupil Queen Elisabethof Belgium. As it was technicallytoo demanding, Ysaÿe rearrangedit for 2 violins and viola. For thisnew edition, Nandor Szederkenyireconstructed the work, part ofwhich had been destroyed in afire in 1927, on the basis of amanuscript copy.

The VivaldiCollection8 Timeless Pieces Arranged forString Quartet
Edited by Barrie Carson Turner
Vivaldi was a prolific composer, very much a string composer, butalso responsible for a wide varie-ty of other work. This selectionincludes extracts from ‘TheSeasons’ – arguably the compos-er’s most well-known work, aswell as other less well-knownvocal and instrumental music. Thetwo extracts from the concertofor two mandolins and the concer-to for two trumpets remind usthat the composer did not restricthimself only to concertos forstring instruments.

Volkonsky, André
Piano Quintetfor string quartet and piano, Op. 5(1955)
Prince André Volkonsky (1933–2008) was a rather charismaticfigure in the Russian post-warmusic scene. His role as a ‘pio-neer’ in the field of twelve-notemusic in Russia cannot be over -emphased. His talent was disco-vered by the great pianist MariaYudina who insistently promotedVolkonsky’s music again andagain in the 1950s. The pianoquintet is one of the first worksYudina got to know and came toappreciate. Although being anearly work by Volkonsky and ontop of that a ‘traditional’ one, thequintet was performed quite oftenand successfully in the 1950s withthe collaboration of Maria Yudina.

Beethoven, Ludwig van
15 BagatellesArrangements for wind quintet by Peter Stamm
In terms of music history, thewind quintet genre is caught bet-ween two schools: 18th-centurycomposers preferred the sextetor octet instrumentation with twoequal instruments each for theirwind divertimentos and serena-des, whereas the Romantic com-posers preferred the warm soundof the string instruments – whichonly left a short period of transi-tion for the mixed wind quintet. There was hardly any great clas-sical music written for this tonallycharming genre. The presentarrangement of several selectedbagatelles by Beethoven shallhelp to fill this gap in the classicalrepertoire. Besides, it is preciselythe genre of the small intimatebagatelle which Beethoven culti-vated his whole life that is able tocreate its own new charm as windchamber music.

Starting point for Schweitzer’scomposition is a sensational epi-sode in the Kalevala, the Finnishnational epic, which tells howJoukahainen challenges the old, wise singer Vainamoinen to acompetition, during whichVainamoinen sings him up to hisneck into the swamp.
The piece challenges both theperformers and the listeners tolet themselves in for unusualsounds and complicated rhythms, with the performers being able totry out various modern playingtechniques. Schweitzer usescolourful and sophisticatedsounds, building more and moretension which concludes with anunexpectedly climactic tutti.

‘Postlude’ was one of 10 birthdaycandles written for Mobius’ 10th

At just 3 minutes inlength and with a lento tempomarking, ‘Postlude’ could be pro-grammed perfectly as an intelli-gent alternative to the stereotypi-cally flashy encore or even as anunusual concert opener. Themusic begins with some beautifulchoral-like chords from the stringquartet before a number of virtuo-sic flashes are injected by a fluteline which gains prominencethroughout the work.

This homage of Tchaikovsky to thegreat admired example of Mozartand a challenge to the solo cellist:‘Rokoko-Variationen’, the themeof which closely follows the styleof 18th-century music, demands amaximum of performing and tech-nical brilliance from the solo cel-list. The variations are musicallyconnected by orchestral ritornel-los which, with regard to musicand substance, almost form asecond sequence of variations.

Ich bin so alleinfor mixed choir (SSAAATTBBB) a cappella
Edited by Clytus Gottwald
Lately, the ‘choir pope’ ClytusGottwald has increasingly arran-ged late Romantic repertoire pie-ces for a cappella choir. He said:‘The idea to make music fromaround the turn of the 19th to the20th century accessible to choirs intranscriptions emerged from theunderstanding that choral a cap-pella music had been underdeve-loped at that time.’ In order torealise this idea, Gottwald focus-sed on pieces from Wagner,Mahler via Ravel, Debussy toMessiaen and Holliger. Thisarrangement is based on an origi-nal piano song by Paul Hindemithon a poem by Else Lasker-Schüler,and its soft and expressive soundmakes it particularly suitable for achoral setting.

Bach, Johann Sebastian
Violin Concertos,Concert for two ViolinsA minor, E major, D minor
Edited by Richard Clarke
To this day, Bach’s violin concer-tos are among the most popularrepertoire pieces of many violi-nists who have to meet greattechnical demands in theseworks. Created during Bach’stime in Köthen, in which the com-poser presented works of revolu-tionary novelty and originality, theviolin concertos testify to Bach’srich instrumental imagination.Whereas his examples still follo-wed a rather rigid structure in theouter movements, Bach managedto achieve a closer connectionand integration of the formal sec-tions by treating the roles of thesoloist and the orchestra in a dif-ferentiated and varying way.

Brahms, Johannes
Symphony No. 1C minorOp. 68 (1876)
No work other than his first sym-phony occupied Brahms for such along time. That was, on the onehand, due to the composer’s meti-culous and extremely self-criticalworking method and, on the otherhand, to the fact that the overw-helming example of Beethovendeterred him. 14 years passeduntil the serious and complexwork was completed. But it wasworth the effort: none of his otherworks contain such a multitude ofmusical ideas, and, after obsta-cles had been overcome, hisSymphony No. 2 was written in asingle summer holiday – whichmay have contributed to the desi-gnation ‘Pastorale’.

Brahms, Johannes
AcademicOuverture, Tragic Ouverture,Haydn VariationsOp. 80, 81, 56a
It is uncertain whether the choraletheme of ‘Haydn Variations’ isactually by Haydn. It is certain, however, that the Variations arecharacteristic of Brahms’ matureorchestral style and his strictsense of form.
With ‘Academic Ouverture’, thecomposer expressed his thanks tothe University of Breslau forgiving him an honorary doctorate.Although the ‘brooding’ ‘TragicOuverture’ which had originallybeen intended for this purposeseemed no longer appropriate toBrahms for that occasion, it hasalways been a resounding suc-cess since its world premiere.

Variations on aRokoko Theme for cello and orchestra, Op. 33
Verison of the Cellist Wilhellm Fitzenhagen
Edited by Thomas Kohlhase
An homage of Tchaikovsky to thegreat admired example of Mozartand a challenge to the solo cellist:‘Rokoko-Variationen’, the themeof which follows the style of 18th-century music closely, demands amaximum of performing and tech-nical brilliance from the solo cel-list. The variations are musicallyconnected by orchestral ritornel-los which, with regard to musicand substance, almost form asecond sequence of variations.

PétrouchkaOriginal version 1911
The two versions of Stravinsky’sPétrouchka constitute separateand parallel incarnations of one ofthe cardinal masterworks of 20th-century music. Arguably the 1911original version is the work of agreater showman: it remains asupreme work of the theatre, while the 1947 score is essentiallyaimed at concert performance.
This corrected edition allowsinformed comparison for the firsttime. The original engraving hasbeen checked against the manus-cript, modern orthography hasbeen applied to the Russian stagedirections, and complete Englishand German reference transla-tions of the stage directions areprovided.
