News from SBCE
CSI BEST STUDENT BRANCH
AWARD - 2013
The Computer Society of India has awarded the
CSI Student Branch of SBCE the Best Student Branch
at the National Level. Formed in 1965, the CSI has been
instrumental to guiding the Indian IT industry down the
right path since its formative years. Today, the CSI has
70 chapters all over India, 418 student branches, and
more than 90000 members including India’s most famous
IT industry leaders, brilliant scientists and dedicated
academicians. This award is being given taking into
consideration the different activities organized by the
Student Branch in the last academic year. It was
observed by the award committee that the seminars,
workshops, symposiums, National Conference and
different expert lectures organized by the SBCE Student
Branch has helped in making the students aware of the
recent trends in the IT field.The award was given at the
48th National Convention of CSI held at Vishakapattanam
on 13-15 December 2013.
Ms. Lakshmi S., A.P., Dept. of CS&E is the
Student Branch Co-ordinator of SBCE. She has
conducted more than 10 programmes at our college within
a short span of one year including national conference,
seminars, workshops and industrial visits.
The various activities includeNUVOLA -
Workshop on Cloud Computing, Workshop on
ANDROID, Training in C++ Programming Language,
TECHUNT 2013, ESDM Workshop, Seminar on
Mainframes and Remote Infrastructure Management.
Started in 2012, the CSI Student Branch of SBCE
is one of the largest student branches in Kerala with
more than 150 student memberships and 3 faculty
memberships.

GRADUATION DAY 2013
The Graduation Ceremony for the 2009-13
B.Tech Batch was conducted on 24 August 2013 with
the esteemed presence of Dr. Sreekrishnakumar,
Regional Director, AICTE - Thiruvananthapuram at the
Ashoka Auditorium, SBCE. Prof. K. Sasikumar
(Chairman, SBES), Prof. V Prasad ( Secretary, SBCE),
Mr. K.K. Sivadasan (Treasurer, SBCE), Dr. Somi
Sebastian ( Principal, SBCE) and Dr. E.K.Bhass ( Dean,
PG Studies and HoD, Dept. of CE) attended the function.
All the graduated students were felicitated with
certificates and memento.

Seminar on Research Methodology
The Post Graduate Inter-disciplinary Forum
(PGIF), Dept. of Civil Engineering and Dept. of
BT&BCE jointly organized a one-day seminar on
“Research Methodology” at SBCE, Pattoor, on 11
December 2013. Dr. E. Gopalakrisna Sarma, Principal,
Sree Buddha College of Engineering for Women,
Elavumthitta delivered a talk on “Research Process”.
He highlighted on the relevance of research and the
process involved.
Dr. B. Narayanan Nair, Visiting Professor,
SBCE, talked on “Solving a research problem”. He
discussed the utilization of scientific methodology to
solve research-oriented problems. Dr. Roshan Kumar,
Professor, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam
delivered a talk on “Ethics and Communication skill”.
He stressed on the importance and viability of research
ethics. Also he emphasised the role of communication
skill and research publications. The session gave energy
and motivation to students to continue education and
involve in research problems and to come up with new
innovative research ideas.
Engineering A Solution
The PGIF in association with the Dept. of Civil
Engineering organized a one-day seminar on “Engineering
a Solution”. Dr. B. Narayanan Nair, Visiting Professor,
SBCE, delivered a talk on “Product Development”. He
mentioned in detail about how a product can be designed
and developed. Mr. N. T. Nair, Chief Editor, Executive
Knowledge Lines, made a talk on “Frugal Engineering”.
The mantra of frugal engineering is do more with less.
It is the process of reducing the complexity and cost of

goods or services without sacrificing quality, and also
making it affordable to people at all levels. The afternoon
session was taken by both Mr. N. T. Nair and Dr. B.
Narayanan Nair on the topic technical writing and thesis
preparation respectively.
Inauguration of Seminar on Engineering a Solution
Vaastu SastraThe PGIF in association with Dept. of Civil
Engineering organized a talk on “Vaastu Sastra” by Mr.
A. B. Sivan, Chief Instructor, Vaastu Vidya Gurukulam,
Aranmula on 4 November 2013. Dr. E. K. Bhass,
Dean(PG) and HoD Dept. of Civil Engineering gave the
presidential address. In the talk, Mr. A. B. Sivan
mentioned that Vaastu is a pure science and a form of
ancient architecture. He related structures with
proportions of human body. Also he mentioned about
ancient sculptures and its existence today. Design of
house as per Vaastu is well explained. In the interactive
session he cleared many doubts and misinterpretations.
The feedback collected shows the session was highly
informative.

Session II consisted of an Invited Talk by Ms.
Dija S, Principal Engineer , RCCF (Resource Centre for
Cyber Forensics), C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram on the
topic “Cyber Forensics”. An Industrial Visit was also
organized to Keltron Controls, Aroor as part of the
Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM)
Workshop. The workshop and industrial visit was well
attended by 92 students that consisted of both PG and
UG students of the Department of CS&E and ECE.
They were accompanied by four faculty members from
Department of CS&E including the Student Branch
Coordinator of CSI Student Branch of SBCE.
ESDM Workshop
The Electronic System Design and
Manufacturing (ESDM) Workshop promoted by the
Department of Electronics and Information Technology
in association with the Computer Society of India was
organized in SBCE, Pattoor on the 5th October, 2013.
The morning session of the workshop witnessed two
invited talks by two eminent personalities. Session I
consisted of an Invited Talk by Dr. Gopalakrishna
Sarma.E, Formerly Manager (Operations & Design/
Engineering), M/s.K.S.E.D.C Ltd., Keltron on the topic
“Electronic System Design and Manufacturing”.
Android Awareness ProgrammeACM Student Branch of SBCE conducted an
Android awareness programme at VHSS, Elanthoor,
Pathanamthitta on 18th December, 2013. The event was
coordinated by Mr. Riji N Das (AP, Dept. of CS&E)
and Mr. Gopu Darsan, Aakash Project Coordinator, A.P.,
Dept.of CS&E. The event was conducted as a social
welfare and technical education promotion programme
TECHUNT 2013
The Computer Society of India Student Branch
of SBCE conducted the Stage I of TECHUNT 2013 -
India’s 1st Talent Hunt for Entrepreneurship jointly
organized by the Computer Society of India and Nurture
Talent Academy at SBCE on 16-17 August 2013. Stage
I consists of a two-day Mobile Applications Development
Workshop and the preliminary competition. About 105
participants from various colleges attended the Stage I
and were actively involved in the workshop. The
following three teams from the college were selected
for the Mentor Boot Camp which was conducted on
25th August 2013 at IIT Chennai Research Park:

Dr. Nagesh Prabhu inaugurating the NSPAB ‘13
.Hour of Code
9-15 December, 2013 was being celebrated as
Computer Science Education Week globally. The Hour
of Code is mainly aimed to promote computer education
globally among all people regardless of age, region,
profession etc. As part of this, the ACM Student
Chapter of SBCE conducted a one-hour promotional
class called “Hour of Code” for S1-CS&E students
based on lecture sessions on http://csedweek.org. The
event was conducted on 13 December 2013 from
3.30p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at CS&E seminar hall. PG
scholars had taken the session for the S1-CS students
and gave them an interactive session based on the online
tutorial provided in the website. The students were given
an overview of programming structures, ways of easier
programme creation, algorithms and android
programming.
NSPAB ‘13
A Two-day National Symposium on Prospects
and Advances in Biotechnology and Biochemical
Engineering (NSPAB’13) was jointly organized by
SBCE, Pattoor and the Council for Food Research &
Development, Government of Kerala, Konni, on 1-2
August , 2013. The symposium was cosponsored by
Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India and Kerala
State Council for Science, Technology and
Environment. The theme of the symposium was on the
application of biotechnology in food processing, quality
assurance and production of drugs and pharmaceuticals
and the various prospective career venues opening up.
Sri. Nagesh Prabhu, Joint Secretary, Dept. of Health
Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, New
Delhi inaugurated the symposium. Dr. Prakash Halami,
Principal Scientist CFTRI (CSIR Mysore) delivered the
technical talk.
Eminent speakers like Mr. N Anil Kumar
(MSSRF, Kalpetta), Dr. T.V Shankar (CIFT, Kochi),
Mr. T.S Ganesan (Medical Oncology Cancer Institute,
Chennai), Mr. Rajesh Nair (Ernst & Young), Ms. Priya
Rao (Pelican Biotech Pvt Ltd) also delivered talks
during the symposium. Representatives from various
biotechnology industries also spoke on the career
prospects in the field. Competitive research and
technical paper presentations for students from various
colleges were conducted and best papers were given
at the symposium
Online Session during Hour of Code
in association with Aakash Tab Centre of SBCE. A group
of UG and PG students visited the school and introduced
Aakash Tablet and demonstrated its usage to the school
students. They also provided an overview to android
programming to the students. The event was marked
with Christmas day celebrations of the school.
Final year B.Tech students demonstrated their project
which got awards at Techhunt conducted at IIT-Bombay
and got selection at TBI-Technopark.

MOMENT 2013
The technical activities of the Department of
Mechanical Engineering, ‘MOMENT 2013’ was
inaugurated on 6 September 2013 by Sri. Premadas T,
Additional General Manager, Mechanical Maintenance
Department, NTPC and followed by a technical talk on
“An Introduction to Thermal Power Plants”. The event
was presided over by Prof. A V Anil kumar, HoD, Dept.
of ME and was attended by Dr. Somi Sebastian, Principal,
SBCE, Prof V Prasad, Secretary, SBES, Sri. K.K.
Sivadasan, Treasurer, SBES, and Dr. E K Bhass, PG
Dean, HoD, Dept. of CE, Mr. Sumith. S, A.P., Dept. of
ME, was the staff coordinator of the activities. In the
afternoon session, the day witnessed a cultural
programme named ROCANA and this programme
showcased several skilled and elite performance by the
students of the department.
National Workshop on Bioprocess Plant
Design
An AICTE-sponsored National Workshop on
Bioprocess Plant Design was organized by the
Department of BT&BCE on 28-29 November, 2013.
Eminent speakers like Prof. T.R Sreekrishnan (IIT,
Delhi), Dr. Sathyanarayana N. Gummadi (IIT, Chennai),
Er. Francis Joseph (METS College, Mala) and Prof. N
Ramachandran (SBCE) delivered talks on various
aspects on bioprocess plant design. The participants of
the workshop also underwent an industrial tour to the
Milma dairy processing unit, Adoor. The deliberations
of the workshop benefited the students in understanding
plant design.

ISTE Workshop on Engineering
Mechanics
IIT Bombay Remote Centre of SBCE in
association with the Department of Mechanical
Engineering conducted a Two-week Workshop on
Engineering Mechanics from 26 November 2013 to 06
December 2013 . The workshop was well attended by
the members of faculty from Dept. of CE and Dept. of
ME from various engineeering colleges. Mr. Jobin Joy,
A.P., Dept. of ME was the workshop co-ordinator.

TACHYONS 2013Dr. M. Jayaraju (Director ANERT) inaugurated
the activities of Tachyons(Association of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering) of the the year 2013 on 10
October 2013.Sri. K.K. Sivadasan, Treasurer, SBES, Dr.
E.K. Bhas, P.G. Dean, Prof. Thomas Mathew, Head,
Dept. of HRM attended the function.The news letter of
EEE Department’IMPULSE’ was released by Dr.M
Jayaraju. Mr. Ganesh (2013 EEE Batch topper) was
awarded the ‘Chanakya’ award. The toppers of S3
and S5 were also felicitated teh function.

Mr. Manoj Narayanan, AP, BT&BCE, was
awarded PhD in Biotechnology by the University of
Kerala on 6 July 2013 for the thesis entitled
“Concentration, detection and molecular characterization
of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis B Virus
and Hepatitis C Virus isolated from water and
wastewater”.

Poster Presentations
Mr. Amjesh R, Lecturer, BT&BCE, presented
a poster on ‘Identification of novel telomeric G-
quadraplex targeting chemical scaffolds through
screening of active compounds from Annona muricata’
at the International symposium on computational biology
and bioinformatics, held at University of Kerala on 11-
12 December , 2013.

NSS CampSree Buddha College of Engineering National
Service Scheme Unit 217 organised a seven -day special
camp ‘HEPTA’ at Sree Buddha Central School on 17-
23 December 2013. The inaugural ceremony was
presided by our college Principal Dr. Somi Sebastian.
The camp was inaugurated by Sri.K.K. Sivadasan,
Treasurer of SBCE, by receiving the organ donation
consent form (under ‘Mrithasanjeevani’ project of Govt.
of Kerala) from Dr.Jency Blesson, Assistant Professor,
Dept. of Biotechnology. After the inaugural ceremony
the camp members were engaged in an Ice-breaking
session.
The first session of the camp started at 4 p.m.
with the class of Sri P.V Sumesh, Motor Vehicle
Inspector, Mavelikara. He had taken an awareness class
on the topic ‘ ROAD SAFETY’. He shared many
valuable informations about the consequences of careless
driving, causes of road accidents, penalties for the violation
of traffic rules etc.
ALTIUS (World Malayalee Council).The session was
named ‘Look Within’. Cultural activities were
conducted by Group 4. The activities of day 5 were
formally closed by Group 4.
The third day of the camp started at 9 a.m.
Dr.C.N. Somarajan, Head, Dept. of HRM, SBCE, talked
on the role of teachers in students’ life. At 10 a.m. Sri
Girish Vallam ,a personality development trainer , enthused
the students with various entertainment programmes. At
12 p.m., Mr. Vipin.K. Anand , Lecturer, Dept. of HRD
gave speech on interpersonal interaction.
After lunch break , Sri Sharaffudeen Ashraf,
Assistant Food Safety Commissioner of Alappuzha ,
delivered an awareness talk on food safety and
precautions of health care. During this session,he also
talked about contamination of food which caused
various deadly diseases. Students raised various doubts
on this topic. The next session started at 4 p.m. Sri.
Shajahan , Health Inspector of Bharanikavu talked about
current life-style diseases and about the demerits of
fast foods. Class ended at 6 p.m. Cultural activities were
also held by the volunteers.
The Fourth day of camp started at 9.30a.m.
Adv.Mujeeb Rahman, Mavelikara Bar Council ,took
class on various laws and judicial action. At 11.45 a.m.
there was a class for volunteers on the methods to take
survey on life-style diseases. During the survey students
focused on the Kerala Government’s organ donation
programme ‘MRITHASANJEEVANI’. The senior
volunteers gave survey instructions and split the students
into 10 groups.The students covered around 200 houses
on the adopted village.The volunteers gave the
informations about the topic and conveyed the
seriousness of the desease. With the survey the
volunteers also
The second day of the camp started with the
presentation of group activities of the first group. First
group’s camp newspaper was launched by the
programme officer Dr.Manoj Narayanan. Second day’s
morning session started with the talk on ‘Role of New
Generation in Agriculture’ by Mrs.Lekha Mohan,
Agricultural Officer, Mavelikkara. She presented vivid
ideas about the various avenues in agriculture. After
that she inaugurated the college vegetable garden by
planting a Neem sapling .It was followed by planting of
various types of vegetable plants by college faculties and
volunteers. After lunch break, an ‘AIDS Awareness’
class was taken by Sri. Thomas Wilson, HFPPT,
Thiruvananthapuram. The class focussed on the causes
of the disease, spreading, preventive methods, etc.After
the tea break, a meditation session was conducted by

collected organ donation consent letters from the public
and they conveys the importance of organ donation to
the common people.Nearly 50 people agreed to donate
their organs. Evening students share their survey
experience. At 9.00 p.m. NSS Technical Cell State
Coordinator Mr.Abdul Jabbar Ahammed visited our camp
and addressed the camp inmates.
On Day 5, medicinal plants were planted.As per
schedule, the volunteers visited Gandhibhavan at
Pathanapuram, which is a home for orphans and mentally
retarded people who have been abandoned by their
relatives. The camp members organized special
programmes and activities for the children, in which they
actively participated and thoroughly enjoyed.The camp
members donated books, pencils, colour pencils,pens,
stationery items sweets and snacks to the little angels.
The camp members also donated Rs.41500/- to the
Caretaker of Gandhibhavan. The camp members assured
that they will frequently visit Gandhibhavan and try to
provide maximum support to the inmates of
Gandhibhavan. By 4 p.m. in the evening, they returned
to the camp.
Day 6 started with the regular activities.After
that the volunteers removed plastic wastes from the
campus and declared the campus as ‘plastic free
campus’by pasting posters about the pollution caused

volunteers.Afternoon session started with class of
Sri.Mahesh Ananthakrishnan,famous short film
director,actor.He dealth with the topic the influence of
the cinema on society.
The last day of the camp started by the session
of Mr. Shankar Narayanan,writer,dramatist.He engaged
an activity-oriented session.After the class, the students
shared their camp experiences.Most of the volunteers
said that ‘their stage fear’ is no more.The Programme
Officer said that he was very happy about the volunteers.
After that the senior volunteers announced the best camp
group,best male and female volunteers. Ms. Athira
Subhash was selected as the best female volunteer and
Mr. Abhijith as the best male volunteer. The closing
ceremony was inaugurated by the Programme Officer
and the programmescame to an end at 2 p.m. with
feedback session and concluding remarks.

Inauguration of CSI Student Branch
The inaugural ceremony of Computer Society
of India (CSI) Student Branch in Sree Buddha College
of Engineering for Women was held on 5 August 2013.
Mr. Rajan T Joseph, Director CSI, was the chief guest
of the function and inaugurated the student branch by
lighting the lamp. He briefed about the importance of
CSI Student Branch and motivated the students to
actively organize and participate in CSI activities. Mr.
Kathiresan.Y, Senior Manager (Promotions), CSI gave
a brief talk on the benefits of being a CSI member, Ms.
Usha Gopalakrishnan, HoD, Dept. of CS&E welcomed
the gathering. The function was presided over by Prof.
K. Sasikumar, Chairman, SBES. In his presidential
address, he urged students to explore the world beyond
text books to gain more knowledgeDr. E.Gopalakrishna
Sarma, Principal, SBCEW offered felicitations.
The Student Branch Coordinator of SBCEW CSI
Student Chapter, Ms. Maya John, introduced the
members of Student Branch Committee. The CSI student
identity cards were distributed by the CSI Director. The
student convener of the CSI student chapter Ms. Nimmy
Ann Thomas proposed vote of thanks.

Inauguration of PEAQE
The Association of the Department of Electrical
and Electronics Engineering, Power Electrical Association
for Quality Engineers (PEAQE), was inaugurated on 01
February, 2014 by Mr. S.J. David, Additional General
Manager, NTPC, Kayamkulam and Technical Talks were
given by Mr.S J David. Mr.Rajith Kumar ( Deputy
General Manager, NTPC) & Mr.Asok Murugan (V-
Guard Industries, Kochi) for bridging the gap between
theacademics of the students and the industrial
environment.Energy saving posters were placed in
different locations of the college for generating
awareness on energy conservation.

The first Graduation Ceremony of SBCEW was
conducted on 03 June 2013. Dr. A V George (Former
Vice- Chancellor, MG University) was the Guest of
Honour. Prof. K. Sasikumar (Chairman, SBES), Prof.
V. Prasad (Vice Chairman, SBCEW), Dr. K. B. Manoj
(Secretary, SBCEW), Dr. E. Gopalakrishna Sarma
