Dear Parishioners,Jesus gave a clear mission to his disciples, “Go. Preach the Gospel to all the nations.”

Since the beginning that has remained the mission of the Church and increasingly seenas the responsibility of every member. At the Second Vatican Council that mission wasarticulated in a beautiful document titled Ad Gentes.

I want to use this mission as a reflection for this year’s season of Lent. In Ad Genteswe read a concise description of our lives, “The Christian faith is, above all, conversionto Jesus Christ, full and sincere adherence to his person and the decision to walk in hisfootsteps.” As we consider our practices for Lent we should be clear about an overallgoal. We should ask, “How will this Lent help me permanently in my life of faith.” Thisidea of conversion should be at the heart of our spiritual lives and provide clear focusfor Lent. Ad Gentes goes on to say, “This demands a personal commitment to think likeHim, to judge like Him and to live as He lived.”

We live in a world that is filled with difficult decisions, moral dilemmas and manycompeting voices. No matter how difficult the problem or how contemporary, the lifeand voice of Jesus offers light and understanding. The message of the Gospel offershope and perspective and has been entrusted to the Church with the apostles.

In recent weeks we have spoken at Mass of opportunities to continue your formationin the faith. As part of living a Genuine Catholic Life we have spoken of the need forongoing education. For this season of Lent I ask you to offer special consideration toyour education in faith. Please do not consider your faith education to be an exercise ofthe past.

Many of us learned a solid foundation in what we believe. We were taught doctrinesand prayers by good parents and teachers. But, as most of us were learning we wereunaware of the greatest challenges of life and faith. As children we learn enthusiasticallyin a protected environment. As we grow older we face many hard truths and experiencepain. Unfortunately this leaves some people disillusioned with faith, feeling abandonedby the God they were taught to trust and follow.

While the challenges of adult life are real, it is in the face of those challenges thatthe message of the Gospel has the greatest meaning. Christ came as a savior because wehave need of saving. Christ is called the light because darkness threatens us. Christ wasborn for us precisely to share our lives. Conversion to Christ means recognizing hispresence in real life, not just in some imagined future.

The strength that comes from faith is something that grows with us. Education infaith means learning this person of Christ as an adult and not clinging to distant memoriesof childhood. “To think like Him, to judge like Him and to live as He lived” takesongoing effort. It means allowing a new perspective and looking at our lives through adifferent lens.

This Lent consider some ways you might gain this new perspective. Maybe you canparticipate in a formal study that is going on with a small group. Maybe you can taketime for to hear the CDs now available. Maybe you can read a book that helps youunderstand the faith more fully. Without a doubt Christ is calling you to an active partin the mission of the Church. Taking up your part starts with your own growth. Learningto think and judge and live like Jesus is possible. Let these forty days mold your heart asa follower and a teacher of Christ.

Giving Up Or Taking Up For LentBy Rev. Fr. Dhanraj Narla.

One of the purposes of Lent is to strengthen and deepen our relationship with Godand Christ, and to prepare for His death and resurrection. This can be accomplished bygiving up something that separates us from God or take on a practice that will get youcloser to God. As I visited one of the Drug Rehab centers the Servite Nuns(Nurses &Doctors) were asking the patients to take on something so that they can give up theirdrugs and alcohol. They had them drink natural fruit juices, milk etc. They also encouragedthem to spend time in prayer, gardening, reading good books, and visiting the orphan girlswho earned their living by their hard work.

Give up complaining.......................................focus on gratitude.

Give up pessimism...................................... become an optimist.

Give up harsh judgments........................... think kindly thoughts.

Give up worry ....................................... trust Divine Providence.

Give up discouragement .......................................be full of hope.

Give up bitterness......................................... turn to forgiveness.

Give up hatred ................................................... show goodness.

Give up negativism.....................................................be positive.

Give up anger .....................................................be more patient.

Give up pettiness............................................... become mature.

Give up gloom............................... enjoy the beauty around you.

Give up jealousy.......................................... ...... pray for humility.

Give up gossiping others’ weaknesses.........share their talents.

Give up sin .............................................................. turn to virtue.

Give up selfishness…………………………….. be more generous.

Give up pleasures……………learn to follow the way of the Cross.

Thus Jesus gave up His life for us at Calvary to give us Eternal life.

This Lenten season of grace is inviting us to take up prayer, penance, sharing ourtime & talents, meditating on the stations of the cross, visiting the sick, reading the HolyBible, loving others as ourselves, feeding the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, etc., thus Lent is inviting us to take up many things rather than giving up one thing so thatwe may grow in God’s love and holiness of grace. We are called to be transformed throughspiritual intimacy and it is made possible by the fullness of grace and truth that camethrough Jesus Christ. May God Bless You!

This Lent instead of a traditional Parish Mission, we will be participating in a 40Hour Devotion on March 13 and 14. It will be a special time of continuous prayer beforethe Blessed Sacrament. Each hour a minimum of two people will need to be present topray before the Sacrament; there is certainly room for more. Different groups and organi-zations at the parish have been assigned specific hours but others are invited to attend atthat time. During those hours, prayer for those organizations and groups will be offered. We will also pray for the parishioners and the parish as a whole. During the school day theschool children will also participate. Msgr. Jim Mancini will speak on Prayer and Recon-ciliation at 6pm March 13th; following his talk the Sacrament of Reconciliation will beoffered to those present. We hope you will make this a part of your Lenten journey andcome and spend time with our Lord. Please call the church office to sign up.

Holy Souls Parish Adopts A Seminarian,MARIO JACOBO

In January, Fr. Erik introduced Seminarian Mario Jacoboto our parish. He had been studying for the Archdiocese of At-lanta, but recently transfered to the Diocese of Little Rock - so,Holy Souls is now his home parish!

Mario was born in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. He came tothe United States as a child in search of a better opportunity. Hewas enrolled in the public school system and after completing hishigh school education, he started working at the young age of 18.

As with any man or woman, it was time to start to discern the direction his lifewould take. He prayed about how he could best serve God, whether as a married man, asingle man or in religious life. Mario was very active in his parish community of St.Clemens Church in Calhoun, Georgia, where he served as a youth minister, parish councilmember and eucharistic minister.

Mario said, “While working with the youth in the parish, God planted in my heartthe seed for my vocation, to serve him and his Church in religious life. God’s plan for merequired that I leave everything behind: family, friends and work. Leaving everythingbehind was a very difficult and scary thing to think about, but I had to learn to trust inhis love and care for me. After some time of prayer and discernment, along with theadvice of my pastor and spiritual director, I decided to leave everything behind.”

In August 2008, he entered the seminary and was sent to St. Joseph Abbey andSeminary College in St. Benedict, Louisiana, for seminary studies in philosophy. Studyingat St. Joseph Seminary College was no easy task. Being that English is not his firstlanguage, he had a difficult time meeting the requirements that were demanded of himin his classes. He took a year to concentrate on studying English.

After that year, Mario returned to St. Joseph Seminary College to continue hiseducation in philosophy. During his four years there, he not only had the opportunity tolearn but also to build community. He actively participated in the community as arepresentative of his class to Piccadilly’s (the seminary food program), as a member ofthe Religious Activity Committee, and now as chairman of the Liturgy Committee forthe 2011-12 school year. He is scheduled to be ordained a priest in 2016.

Please keep our Seminarian, Mario, in your prayers. If you would like to send him acard, his address is: Mario Jacobo, St. Joseph Seminary, 75375 River Road, St. Benedict,LA 70457.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS BY THE NUMBERSJust as you would plan and budget for repairs and maintenance for your home, so

too does the Buildings and Grounds Committee here at Holy Souls. In 2007, thecommittee assisted in the STEP Capital Campaign by designating those projects thatwere essential in funding to keep our church home in good condition and to provide forthe expansion of our church family. The projects that were paid for from the campaigninclude: replacing the flat portion of the church roof, repairs to the steeple, refurbishingof the school office to ensure a secure school, installation of a key card access systemfor the school and the Allen Center, purchase and removal of buildings on two adjacentproperties to make room for future expansion and finally, the remodeling of the BenedictHouse to provide meeting space for our growing youth and adult programs and therenovations of the school playground for a safe & clean environment for our students.Money was also set aside to establish a fund to help meet ongoing maintenance costs.

The STEP Capital Campaign is now complete! Our current objective is to assessand identify the next series of projects that must be performed in order to keep ourchurch home safe and in top condition. In order to not deplete our general maintenancefund, the Parish Maintenance Fund was developed to cover the expenses of largerBuildings and Grounds projects. In looking for a guide as to how much, we as a church, should place aside for a Parish Maintenance Fund, The Department of Higher Educationfor Universities was referenced. They recommend placing $2.50 per square foot ofbuilding space per year into a designated maintenance fund. Our Parish has a little over85,000 square feet which calculates to over $200,000 per year to set aside for a maintenancefund. This figure may seem a little to steep for our Parish to fund, but if you look at thenumbers below you will see that total is not too far off. The Buildings and Groundscommittee has developed an extensive assessment of our campus and from thatassessment a Top Ten Projects List for completion in the next 5 years is outlined below.

Joist supporting the walkway between the churchand Parish Hall are in advanced state of corro-sion. Temporary supports have been installed untilthe repair work can be done in June.

I am happy to report that the 26th Annual Shrimp and Oyster Dinner was the bestever. I want to personally thank our many members and volunteers who assisted inputting on this enormous event. I also want to thank our many patrons and guests whomake the dinner so special year after year. A total of 700 dinners were served. To putthis into perspective, these meals required the boiling of 11,200 shrimp, 6,000 oystersbreaded and fried, and 800 half shell oysters shucked not to mention many crates of slaw.

Lent begins on February 22nd and that means Lenten fish fries. Bring the wholefamily out for these very reasonable and fun dinners. This year’s fish fries will be heldon February 24th, March 2nd, and March 16th.

By Carolee Riley, Altar Society President

It’s hard to believe spring is only a few weeks away. Spring continues to be myfavorite season for a number of reasons—it symbolizes rebirth and growth. It’s a timefor new beginnings and new opportunities. Spring can also be a good time to replenishour seeds of faith. God said, “Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” (2 Corinthians 9:6)

I would like to invite all women of the parish, 21 and older, to replenish your seedsof faith by participating in the Holy Souls Altar Society. While working together to carefor the physical church building, the Parish Hall and the needs of our priests, we meetmonthly to share meals, discuss current events as they relate to our church, listen andreflect on the word of God and strengthen our fellowship with one another.

The Altar Society also offers many opportunities to serve our parish. On March 13,members of the Altar Society will participate in the 40 Hours Devotion from 9-10 a.m.in the church. Participating in this devotion will be a wonderful opportunity to deepenour faith. All women and men are invited to spend this hour with us in prayer as part ofour parish mission.

As you are probably aware, we just wrapped up our annual Mardi Gras Dinner andFundraiser last month. Many thanks to the numerous parishioners and friends whovolunteered their time, talents and services to make this a successful fundraiser for ourparish. I’d also like to thank the many businesses and individuals who graciously donateditems and services, and those who attended the event as well. We appreciate yoursupport.

Beginning in March, we will change our Altar Society meeting time from 7 p.m. to 6p.m., to accommodate schedules and increase membership and participation. Our nextAltar Society meeting will be on March 13. I truly hope you’ll consider replenishingyour seeds of faith with us.

O Jesus, I pray for Yourfaithful and ferventpriests; for Yourunfaithful and tepidpriests; for Your priestslaboring at home orabroad in distant missionfields; for Your temptedpriests; for Your lonelyand desolate priests; forYour young priests; forYour dying priests; forthe souls of Your priestsin purgatory.

By Fred Graham, Organist and Music Director

The Resurrection Chorale was one of the great surprises when I came to Our Ladyof the Holy Souls almost five years ago. Each member of this group agrees to receive aphone call when there is a funeral at Holy Souls. Members then check their schedulesand come and sing if they are available. That’s it—no rehearsal and no extra timerequired.

This is a fantastic ministry of the church, as funerals are often attended by manypeople from outside Holy Souls (both Catholics and non-Catholics). I cannot tell youhow many times these people come to talk to me after funerals to tell me how wonderfuland supportive it is to have a choir at a funeral. I believe it is a real expression of God’slove present in our community. Diane Hoelzeman, a long-time member of the groupwrites:

I’ve been in the Resurrection Chorale since its inception. Retirement providesme with the gift of time to be available for funerals that most of those in theParish Choir don’t have. I enjoy singing and this ministry is a “fit” for me.

The real gift of being a part of the Resurrection Chorale is the knowledge thatwe are providing comfort and consolation to grieving families and loved ones of theParish through our music.

— Diane Hoelzeman

By Denise Morbit, Director of Youth MinistryOur meeting place displacement

has come to a beautiful end, andCYM is grateful to be in the newlyrenovated Benedict House. It’sexciting to see how proud the kidsare of their new space. Please cometo our parish Benedict House openhouse taking place Sunday, March11th following the 8 and 10 a.m.Masses. It’s been a parish goal forover five years, and you will be verypleased with what you see!

At last writing, the CYM waspreparing to go to Indianapolis forthe National CatholicYouth Conference. In midNovember we were partof a 4 bus Diocese ofLittle Rock caravan to theevent and joined over23,000 other youth for afantastic and faith filledweekend. Our kidsattended massive praiseand worship sessions heldin Colts’ Stadium, went toworkshops and speakers, saw a little of the city, and met new friends from all over thecountry. The weekend ended with a beautiful Mass. Just the procession of Bishops, priests and seminarians lasted 10 minutes. I wish everyone could experience NCYC.

Christmas Caroling has grown to two nights – one for the junior high and one for thehigh school. The weather cooperated, and we maneuvered the parish neighborhood togo to about 16 houses. Some of the choir youth help lead the singing. It’s a greattradition the CYM has continued over the past 6 years.

Another Advent tradition CYM has adopted is our parish gift baskets to ourhomebound members. We shop and assemble the baskets with goodies and then pairup youth to deliver them. It’s been a good way for the youth to connect with the oldermembers and for the older parishioners to see the youth doing good things.

On a social note, we continue thejunior high dances which I think thesenior high kids have just as much funhosting. We had a Holidays Dance inNovember and our first Glow Dance inJanuary! The idea was suggested by thejunior high leadership team members, andit got a “shining review.” Our St.Patrick’s Day Dance are right around thecorner. We continue to invite otherCatholic junior high schools, and it’s a

good way for them to socialize with their future high school classmates. To mark the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, Holy Souls youth joined other Diocesan

parish youth in attending the annual Extravaganza. For the first year it was held downtownat the Convention Center, and we slept at a downtown hotel instead of at UALR’s StudentUnion. Having a bed was so muchnicer than the gym f loor! TheSaturday evening in January beganwith praise and worship, speakersincluding Marianne Linane with theRespect Life office, Bishop Taylor, and a guest speaker. Her talk involvedher experience of living in a coma dueto a stroke and almost being takenoff life supports. Our Diocese youthministry office has provided a widerange of life issues and questionablecircumstances our world seems totolerate such as pregnancy andabortion due to rape, pulling the plugwhen the life seems to be worthless, etc. It’s been very positive for ourkids to hear about and from peoplewho rally around and passionatelysupport human life in all stages. TheMarch for Life was a great success, and Channel 4 News interviewed ourown Jacob Hopkins at the Capitol. March for Life

We recently collected $1156 at our 6th annual Souper Bowl of Caring. The entirecollection was donated to Our House to help fight hunger in our community. The SeniorHigh youth have plans for a Day of Service in conjunction with the annual Box-In(February 25). The kids will also be “panhandling” after the morning Masses on February26 to donate to a local charity. There’s been overwhelming interest and response toattending the Heifer Global Village overnight experience, so we are going as a groupMarch 31-April 1.

The Junior High CYM has met afew times with significant turnout. Our first meeting in the BenedictHouse hosted over 60 youth, and itwas glorious chaos! The Junior Highhas also begun to have lunch timeScripture studies once every twoweeks. I am pleased at the greatresponse, even on beautiful days whenthey could enjoy recess in the sunshine. It’s awesome they choose to spend itlearning about Christ and their faith.

Once again, we hope you willattend the open house of therenovated Benedict House, Sunday,March 11 following the 8 and 10 a.m.Masses. You will feel even moreblessed to be part of such a wonderfuland generous parish family.

“Recipesfromthe Soul”COOKBOOK

by Regina Binz

I am very proud to announce that we now have quadruple the storage space in theParish Hall, which made it possible to purchase four new sewing machines. We nowhave a total of six machines! I plan to lead sewing workshops in the future to allow somefolks to get some “hands-on” experience using a sewing machine, whereas otherwisethey might not ever try. Let me know if this sounds like something you would like toparticipate in, either as a student or as an instructor.

As I have watched the seed of the Holy Sews Ministry sprout and blossom, I haverelied on God to honor those who help fulfill its mission. I often refer to the prayer of St.Teresa of Avila: Christ has no hands but yours… No hands, no feet on earth but yours.Yours are the eyes through which He looks—compassion on this world. Yours are thefeet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which He blesses all theworld. Yours are the hands; yours are the feet; yours are the eyes… YOU ARE HIS BODY.

I have decided that there are a lot of people who deserve earthly recognition for theirwork with Holy Sews. This means we need to maintain a list of the active volunteers, and keep track of the number of completed items turned in by each person. To ensurethat everyone is recognized, we have created a special volunteer nondisclosure agreement.I am respectfully asking those of you who serve as God’s hands on Earth to sign thisagreement. I’d like to call it “Our Book of Secrets.” (I mean really, what if Oprah looksat this book someday? I’d want her to see your name in it!) I’m going to put the documentin the front of a special book, and then everyone who participates can write their namesin the pages that follow. For those of you who volunteer your time, but don’t usuallycome to the work days, we definitely want to make arrangements for you to sign. It willbe kept in the church office for you to sign at your leisure, or you may contact me forspecial arrangements.

Holy Sews Ministry

In addition to helpingtrack each volunteer, theparameters set forth in theagreement protect theintegrity of the ministry.

Another importantreason to keep track ofour volunteers: InDecember of each year,Holy Sews holds ananniversary celebrationand infant memorial forthe families of the sweet babies that we dress. This is a time where we invite all bereavedfamilies to come light a candle in memory of their angel. Every year, this celebrationgrows, and 2012 will be no different. This year, we will begin a new tradition of honoringthose who have helped, and those who have gone above and beyond. We currently serve 31 hospitals, and since December of 2008, we have made about934 layettes. We have 132 contacts on our email list and 189 facebook group members.

In addition, I am working with individuals in Canada, Texas, Iowa and Virginia toform their own Holy Sews chapters. Part of this process has necessitated a few things. For example, we now have custom designed fabric for our tunics. The patterns and logoare registered trademarks of the Holy Sews Ministry of Our Lady of the Holy SoulsCatholic Church. They cannot be reproduced or distributed without our permission.

Thank you so much to everyone in the Holy Souls family for supporting andparticipating in this ministry. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free tocontact me at [email protected].

FACTS ABOUT DONATING BLOOD• Blood donation takes about an hour and includes a mini-physical

with a blood pressure screening and an iron check

• There is no substitute for human blood and the one and only sourceis volunteer donations. Your blood is needed to save lives.

• Donating blood rarely hurts. Usually, all you feel is a brief string inyour arm - a small discomfort in exchange for saving a life.
