The Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra has been featured quite a lot this past month in My Town Magazine.com.au for both the Soirée evening performance and MBSO’s involvement with JAFA’s production of Oliver! Below are some quotes from the magazine.

A Soirèe of Musical Indulgence

“It’s a night when we indulge ourselves and play what we want.” Ros Booth said as she took the stand as MC to the annual Soirèe of the MBSO.

But rather than a selection of rehashed pop songs from the current musical trendsetters, the programme covered by the 80-strong extremely young performers, included most of the classical composers, and just a sprinkling of Sonheim, and Lloyd Weber hits. And even Bernstein’s Maria from West Side Story – was played on a French Horn.

President Eve Brown said that although they perform with professional musicians in various musical genres, including classical opera, musical theatre, concert bank, jazz and contemporary music, the Soireè is intended to not only have fun, but to extend the members’ repertoire and performance experience.

Oliver!

Following JAFA’s fine tradition of presenting great and affordable musical theatre for a local, appreciative audience, Oliver! will be staged on the last two weekends in June. Adapted from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist… book, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, this is JAFA’s eighth full scale musical since their inaugural 2002 production of Godspell. Other previous shows have included Jesus Christ Superstar, Beauty and the Beast, My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music. As in previous JAFA productions, the musical accompaniment for Oliver! will be provided by The Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra, under the professional direction of conductor Bronwyn Gibbs.

The role of Oliver will be played by 10 year old Jackson Hughesman. A student at St Patrick’s College, Jackson has

trained at Fame Musical Theatre, Brisbane Junior Theatre and Performance Power. He’s previously appeared in Shrek, Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Sound of Music. Jackson says: “ I have loved theatre since the day I could walk. As a toddler I always had a microphone in my hand. I started acting at the age of 3 and haven’t stopped. I am honoured to be playing the part of Oliver. My dream in the future is to have my name in lights on New York’s Broadway.” Jackson is ably supported in his role by The Artful Dodger and a talented, enthusiastic group of singing and dancing work house children.

Music teacher and conductor of The Australian Girls’ choir, Lara Boyle takes the role of Nancy. Lara has also starred in many JAFA productions such as The Sound of Music and Beauty and The Beast. The heavy role of Bill Sikes is menacingly played by Tom van Kaliken, with JAFA founding member Phil Halpin playing the pivotal role of Fagin.

Oliver! is directed by Michael Pitman. While this is Michael’s first foray into directing a musical for JAFA, he’s a thirty-six year veteran of musical theatre. Michael brings a wealth of experience, having appeared in on-stage roles for JAFA in five previous productions. The musical directors are Jenni Lake and Lara Boyle.

Edvard Grieg composed the incidental music for the original 1876 stage production of Peer Gynt, at the invitation of the play’s author, Henrik Ibsen. The complete score plays for about ninety minutes, but the music became so popular that Grieg fashioned two fifteen-minute orchestral suites from it, and these suites are now far more frequently performed than either the complete score or Ibsen’s own play. The Peer Gynt Suites became, along with his Piano Concerto in A Minor, Grieg’s most often-performed works.

What is a Motive?A MOTIVE is the smallest unit of musical form. It can be as short as two notes (as in the ‘cuckoo’ as used by composers) and is rarely more than six notes. A motive usually has a clear, rhythmic pattern as well as a clear melodic outline. In some cases it is a harmonic pattern of two or three distinctive chord sounds.

A motive is a musical seed from which a long composition might grow. The four tones that form the motive at the beginning of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony are used as the basis for the whole first movement of the work: G, G, G, E.

Wagner's operas are built from a number of motives, each one representing an idea, a person, or an action.

A motive might be a short, rhythmic pattern as in Mozart's

Symphony no 40 in G Minor, which through repetition on different pitches becomes part of a long melodic line. Handel's Saraband in D Minor repeats a two measure pattern on rising pitches, as though the composer were piling brick upon brick to

make a building. Chopin's Prelude in C Minor uses a one measure rhythmic motive throughout, achieving variety and expressiveness by means of constantly changing chromatic harmony. Many popular songs, such a George Gershwin's I Got Rhythm and Vincent Youman's Tea for Two are based on short rhythmic motives which are repeated on various melodic pitches.

A motive has little or no meaning by itself. Only after development into a melody can it be appreciated.

Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture was composed in 1844 and first

performed at the Salle Herz concert hall in Paris in 1844.

A stand-alone overture intended for concert performance, the piece is made up of material and themes

from Berlioz's opera Benvenuto Cellini – an opera which wasn’t

received well – and includes some music from the opera's carnival

scene (hence the overture's title).

It is scored for large orchestra, is in the key of A major, and features a prominent and famous solo for

the cor anglais.

So, you are planning to attend a presentation of The Messiah at the end of the year, but will wait till about October before you decide which of the many performances to attend. No doubt you will stand with everyone else at the Hallelujah chorus. That's because King George rose to his feet in excitement at that point in the London premiere with the audience following his lead. Right? Well, don't bother.

There is no evidence that King George even attended that premiere. In fact, the papers of the day usually made a strong mention of the King attending ANY musical performance or public event, and they are mute about such a happening at that performance. For those who are of the opinion that Australia should be a Republic, their choice is sometimes to remain seated as an anti-royalist statement.

A married couple were planning an evening out. The cat was put outside early so as not to delay getting in the taxi. However, when it arrived and they opened the door to leave, it streaked back inside. The husband went looking for it while the wife went down to hold the taxi. As she

didn't want anyone knowing the house was empty, she said her

husband was making a last check on his mother’s wellbeing. After a time the husband came out and climbed into the car. "I had a heck of a time to find her" he said. "The silly old fool had hidden under the bed. I had to prod her with an umbrella to make her come out."

ALEXANDER BORODIN "As a composer seeking to remain

anonymous, I am shy of confessing my musical activity...

For others it is their chief business, the occupation and aim of life. For

me it is a relaxation, a pastime which distracts me from my

principal business, my professorship. I love my profession

and my science. I love the Academy and my pupils, male and female, because to direct the work

of young people, one must be close to them."

Born in 1762, six years after Mozart, Salieri became extremely well known and admired as he lived his adventurous life. He presented his music much more regularly than his older compatriot and was held in higher regard. He was commissioned to write the opera that opened La Scala in 1778 and traveled abroad frequently, where he achieved great success across the continent.

By the time of his death at age 75, his star had waned and it was not until Milos Forman's film Amadeus that he came to public attention again.

Salieri was born in the Veneto region of Italy and began to study music at a young age. Unfortunately he was orphaned but a wealthy nobleman took him to Venice at age fifteen f or further study. Here he met the Viennese composer Florian Gassman who was so impressed with his skill that he brought the lad back to Vienna where he virtually adopted Salieri, giving him a complete education. The most notable of his supporters was Emperor Josef 11 with whom he played as a group member.

When Gassman (his sponsor) was unable to to fulfill a commission, Salieri did so in his place. When Gassman died in 1774, Salieri took over and became the director of the Italian opera company in Vienna. By 1881 he was very well established and it is then a little-known musician, W. A Mozart

arrived on the scene.

A continuing series of successes followed,

with Salieri gaining more prominence till he was appointed Imperial Kapellmeister. He

held this position till he retired in 1824.

Following the death of Emperor Josef in 1790, Salieri began composing again but he was unhappy with the music being presented on stage and abandoned stage compositions completely in 1805.

He continued teaching and Beethoven, Liszt. Meyerbeer and Schubert all studied under him.

He directed the guns in Beethoven's Wellington’s Victory and other large works. He also began editing and revising his own works with commentaries on them.

Salieri’s health declined. His wife and son had died and his two remaining daughters cared for him. Before Mozart's death, the rivalry between the two men seemed to benefit both. At a performance of The Magic Flute where Salieri was the guest of Mozart, he called out loud ‘bravos’ many times during the performance. It seems they had friendship and no idea of the stories that would be told about them in l ater years.
