South Canton Scholars Charter Academy  Superb 7 th Grade Sharks Weekly Newsletter for October 29 th - November 2 nd   November Field Trip/Spirit Day- Nov. 2 nd  Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences- November 14 th and 15 th  ½ Day of School- Friday Nov. 16 th  No School- November 21 st -25 th  Report cards- Friday Nov. 30 th  Our second annual mixer will be held on December 14 from 5:00-7:00pm. If you are interested in chaperoning or planning this mixer please contact Ms. Textor. Mrs. Morgan will be our head/go to mixer parent this year. Planning will begin soon so p lease let us know ASAP  November Conferences Fall conferences will take place on the evenings of November 14 th and 15 th . Each family will be given a 10 minute time slot  to discuss NWEA scores, goals, classroom academies, and behavior in class. Signups are in the office. November:  Gratitude This month we are focusing on Gratitude for this month’s moral focus. We have talked to the students about things that they are grateful for and how to appreciate what we have in our lives, not to take items or people for granite. Students are making a gratitude jar over the course of the month to list things they appreciate in life and are happy for. This past week students have continued working on their narrative fictional writing piece. The classes have been vigorously working on their first rough draft. Once drafts are complete students will be conferencing with the teacher to determine what changes need to be made to create a successful paper. Students may b e at different stages until the final copy is turned in. In book clubs, students read chapter one and two in ‘The Hunger Games’. While reading students were taking notes on key plots, characters and settings of the story. Groups also answered questions about each chapter and looked up their Hunger Games vocabulary words to determine which definition was used in the book specifically. The classes shared their “Utopian World” towards the end of the week. Next week students will be quizzed on the first two chapters and continue reading with chapters three and four. I Can…  Read 7 th grade text fluently with correct dialogue and intonation.  Generate the first rough draft to my narrative fiction story.  Create my own Utopian society and relate it to Suzanne Collins wit hin ‘The Hunger Games’.  Comprise a story and incorporate vocabulary words that I have used over the course of the school year thus Science/Soci al Studies with Ms. Walkuski Science: This week in science, students had a quiz on the second law of thermodynami cs and heat transfer. Next week we will begin studying the periodic table and the arrangement of the elements. Social Studies: This week in social studies students took a test on Ancient A frica. The test included their government, culture and religio n. Next week we will begin a new unit and travel into Egypt. I can…  I can analyze factors and people causing the rise of African Civilizations . Moral Focus Wisdom Respect  Gratitude Self-Control  Perseverance Courage Encouragement Compassion  Integrity  Math with Mr. Vantiem This past week we have been working on least common Equivalent fractions and decimals and comparing integers in course 2 of Holt mathematics. We just had our unit 2 test and are getting ready to move into unit 3 where we will be applying rational numbers. In course 3 we have been focusing exponents and properties of exponents, we will have a small quiz on t his Thursday. In both math classes we are working on solving more word problems. Coming Soon. . . Mixer Time!!! Students that are planning on attending the mixer can begin turning in their money next week. Cost is $5.00 ahead of time. This includes entrance, one slice of pizza and a pop. Should you pay the day of cost will be $7.00. We encourage students to pay as soon as they can so that we have a continuing list of those attending. There will be an opportunity for students to be a “guest DJ” and information will come out soon for your students! Get excited!!! Change in Middle School Conferences!!!! Due to your students seeing different teachers for all subject areas this year you have the opportunity to choose what teacher you would like to see. It does NOT have to be your child’s homeroom teacher. However, you may only sign up with one teacher you cannot make three different conferences because that would take away from others. Please remember that conferences are only 10 minutes to accommodate the teachers seeing more than their homeroom class. You can sign up for these at the office. Conference sheets are coming home with your student today. Please make sure that you return them as soon as possible so that we can prepare for your conference. Thank you.
