NEWSLETTER 2013 Since taking office in May 2012 my time as Mayor has passed so quickly I can hardly believe my year is coming to an end. It has been an extremely enjoyable time and it has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve the people of Llwchwr. There have been so many highlights during the year it is very difficult to pinpoint any one in particular. They have all been special. It has been a delight to visit all four Primary Schools and present the children with Diamond Jubilee coins and also pens to the pupils moving on to secondary education. I have enjoyed their assemblies, shows and pantomimes. During the past year I have visited The Guides, The Brownies, The Scouts and The Cubs in the area and I was always made welcome and the young people always asked educated questions. One of my first engagements as Mayor was opening the Diamond Jubilee Fun Day at Parc Williams. The sun was shining and the park was full of families having a wonderful day out. I can only congratulate the committee of “Friends of Parc Williams” on their organisational skills. One young group in the area “The Young Fire–fighters” went all out to show me their skills. I was more than impressed with the work that is being achieved by these young people. After their demonstration they “grilled” myself and the Clerk with questions on how the Town Council is run. I hope we were successful in answering all their questions. I have also had the pleasure to present cheques to a number of organisations i.e. Scouts, Guides, Loughor Old Age Pensioners Association, Loughor Town Trust, Tre Uchaf Primary School PTA, Young Fire-fighters, The Welsh Woodcrafts Association, Macmillan Cancer Support, 360 (Llwchwr) Squadron ATC and Age Concern Llwchwr. Christmas was a busy time for myself and Austin. The first engagement was the annual Lantern Parade. There was a wonderful turn out once again and I enjoyed my ride in the open top car and visiting Father Christmas. We attended Carol Services at Moriah Chapel, Jireh, St. Michaels and St. Catherine’s Churches. The Christmas Lights Competition was once again very successful and the four worthy winners received their cheques. “Thanks for the mince pies and mulled wine”. One annual engagement that really sticks in my mind is “Remembrance Sunday”. I attended the service in St. David’s Church. And i was overwhelmed with the number of children in the congregation. The church was filled to capacity. After the service we marched to the Monument where wreaths were laid in remembrance to the fallen in past and present wars. The people of Loughor did themselves proud. They came out in their hundreds. I felt so proud to be representing them on that special day. My charity this year is “Diabetes” Singleton Hospital Dept. Being a diabetic myself it hasbeen a pleasure to raise money for this cause. Without the medication and care I receive I am sure I would not be able to lead the full and active life that I do. I thank youall, for your friendship, kindness and the support that you have given me over the past year. It has been a privilege to be our Mayor. Every Summer for the last few years the Councilhas sponsored a Hanging Basket Scheme in theTown Council’s area. This has seen hangingbaskets fitted to lamp posts throughout the areaand barrier troughs on railings at various roadjunctions. Last year with the bad weather we didnot have as good a display as in previous years. However the Council is hoping that the comingSummer will be different and that the scheme haswhich has proved very popular will provide asplendid display of colour. The Council has notextended the Scheme for the coming year but isworking to provide a good community facilitywithin an existing budget. It is good to know thatthe Scheme has been so well received by thecommunity and that it has provided a colourfulspectacle for the summer.

In the winter, the Council, in the run up toChristmas, runs a competition for the best

decorated house. This applies to externaldecorations rather than internal ones. These aredecorations which are shared with thecommunity and brighten up the Festive Season. The prize is £25.00 and there is a prize for LowerLoughor, Upper Loughor, Kingsbridge and GardenVillage.

Also at Christmas there is the Lantern Paradewhich is a joint event with Gorseinon TownCouncil. This is another popular event which iswell supported by the community particularly bythe primary school children and always ends witha spectacular Fireworks Display. This year was noexception with more people than ever turning outfor the parade and the fireworks. Fortunately theheavy rain held off until the fireworks werecoming to an end and so did not dampen thingstoo much, though it did pour down afterwards
