I’m writing this on June 19, and am reminded that it was on June 19, 2000, that I took a flight with two other passengers and our pilot, Don Bowers, out of Talkeetna, Alaska. Mt. My Years With General Motors

By all reports, Immediate Past President George Lilly did a bang-up job of honoring the outstanding seniors from Grosse Pointe South and North High Schools on May 28. Thanks, George.

In July, we will hear from Frederick Pearson on Middle East Developments, who should have plenty to talk about. I am certain it will be in a more serious vein than my brother Rich’s report on life in Saudi Arabia. Then it will be Jay Ganatra speaking on My Years with General Motors around the World, which should be of interest to our many members retired from the auto industry. (It was interesting to me to learn that Ed White had managed the GM plant on the eastern outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, a few years before I volunteered at a university there for a semester and rode past the plant several times a week.)

with him. He was an excellent pilot, but things can go wrong. Google for Don Bowers Iditarod, and you will find numerous websites about Don.

Now, to bring things full circle I need to tell you that in March of 2000 I took a trip to London for a week, and when we were a short way out on the return, a passenger near me had a hush-hush conversation with the flight attendant. Soon after, they began distributing complimentary drinks, and then came an announcement that a non-critical piece had fallen off one of the engines at takeoff and the cockpit had determined it would be prudent to have it replaced. They jettisoned the fuel while making a big U-turn and went back for repair. Needless to say, I wondered what

would happen on my third flight of 2000, to Nairobi.George Arsenault and his Nominating Committee

have drawn up an excellent slate of nominees for the Board for the year beginning in October. The election meeting will take place near the end of the membership meeting on July 9.

I’m happy to report that three months after my head shave for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, my fauxhawk is finally beginning to lie down. My final amount raised was $2,302, by far my best in the four years I’ve participated. Thanks again to my many supporters in SMC.

Investment Seminar - May 15, 2013 Speaker: Jay BlackburnIntroduction by: /Dan BeckReported by: Dan Beck

Current Investment Markets There are many positive reasons and opportunities to invest today. Avoid listening to every newscast. Be happier by avoiding

pessimistic comments regarding the market. Some consumer sentiments are down from listening to a mantra that stocks will be better next year. Inflation is contained. It is below 2%, which our economy can handle. Stocks are not expensive; look at their price earnings ratio. Global growth should pick up and turn positive. Housing is going above the asking price. Inventory is low with pricing improving the past 13 months. Earnings are up following corporate performance. An old saying is “don’t fight the Fed. Invest in the market”. Interest rates

going up but Fed will keep them low over next two to three years. Natural gas prices are forced lower and lower in the USA due to fracking competition. Fifty percent Honeywell and G.E. earnings

are earned outside of the USA as companies look for opportunities.

Q. Technology sector opportunities?A. Key is profit. Margins are huge and while some prices have dropped down don’t think it's ending soon.

Q. Apple hit $700, went below $400 and is now $456?A. Think $450 is expensive. BroadCom will do well as will Qualcom.

Q. Gold.A. “Is a greater fool investment”, last 10 years was great but has no earnings, no income, stay away from it.

Q. Silver?A. Has more support and larger functional base. Price base better than gold but still volatile.

Q. Housing i.e. Pulte Homes.A. Analysts feel such stocks are high.

Q. Is European situation negative?A. Enough positive events will occur over next several years to “right the ship”, especially in France, Germany and England.

Q. Natural gas?A. Is close to a low and will go up. Be cautious, if you own a lot, don’t sell.

Q. Japan?A. Japanese equities will improve. Central Bank taking long-term positive steps.

Q. Should high yield issues be avoided? I’ve a tendency to acquire.A. If you experience two price drops it’s a sign of fundamental problems. High yields not supported by cash flow are to be avoided.

Yield above 8% is a warning sign.

Q. Obamacare effect?A. Obamacare does nothing about most important aspect of health care. We don’t know what it costs.

Q. P&G? What’s wrong?A. Nothing wrong. It is a buy recommendation. Probably in the $23 range.

Jay is a very competent representative of his profession. We look forward to his return.

Reading List

In an essay in the 1850’s, Alex Dumas challenged readers to find a source for his COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Reiss, a journalist, selects Alex Dumas’s own father, General Dumas. In biography form, stories we knew little of are told. First is presented a portrayal of life on the French sugar plantations of Saint-Domingue. Antoine Pailleterie, Alex’s father, flees from his brother’s sugar plantation to reappear after some thirty years with a son Thomas Alexander by a mulatto woman. With the brothers dead, Antoine claims the family estate in France. He buys back his son and the two dissipate the estate.

Then the son chooses to enlist under the name of Alex Dumas. A person of good size and great agility, he distinguishes himself in his first campaign. He gives his booty to the Revolution. Serving thereafter with the Free Legion “American” Blacks, he rises quickly out of the ranks and is entitled to marry the promised Marie-Louise who quickly bore him a son, Alex Dumas, the writer.

Reiss takes us through all that going on in Paris from 1789. As the Revolution combusts, the Royal family perishes in a futile escape move. The Directory in the mid 1790s begins schools without distinction of color and in 1796 appoints Napoleon Bonaparte

chief-general of the army. He in time ends all help for blacks. Dumas resist orders in little ways as he see Napoleon becoming a potentate as he liberates Italy In route home from Egypt, Gen Dumas is mysteriously imprisoned in Naples for some two years. The two year stay ruins his health. All this time and in recovery he hears not a word from Napoleon. Requests for a command in the French army are unanswered. There are no benefits for previous service despite Marie-Louise’s approach to everyone of consequence in her husband’s career. Napoleon refuses to speak of him. Gen. Dumas in his letters and in talking to his son vividly describes his every adventure and misfortune. Tom Reiss notes that Edmund Dantes in the COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is in similar circumstances too many times for it to be coincidental. All agreed, the book was a great selection for the Readers.

The July reading is REMARKABLE CREATURES by Tracy Chevalier. The Meeting will be held July 16th at Jack Cabau’s home at 830 Fairford in Grosse Pointe Shores from 5:00 until 6:30pm. RSVP (313) 881-1467. There is no August Meeting. The September Reading is the FIRST TYCOON by T.J. Stiles. Location to be announced.
