KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 36 - 2017 Thursday 16 th November, 2017 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Thank you to everyone who attended the Year 3-6 concert, Pass the Remoteat the Kurunjang Secondary school gymnasium, last Thursday night. The gym was filled to capacity and families were rewarded to the organization, planning and choreography of each of the classes in years 3-6. Our KPS superheros commentated from the ‘couch’ introducing the items from each class which was also punctuated with live advertisements. We hope that you and the family enjoyed all the performances. I saw many photos and filming for your children’s respective performance. Thank you to all of the Year 3-6 students for their efforts and pursuit of excellence as well as respect for their peer performances. Yesterday the Foundation students attended their very first school excursion to the farm. We were feeling particularly lucky with the weather - although it was warm, there was cloud cover and little wind, no rain, which made for a more comfortable day. The children were so excited about the animals they had tended and the activities of making and eating butter, not to mention the picking up of the cow pats (with gloves!!). Many dropped off to sleep on the bus ride home and I expect slept well last night. I am sure the Year 1/2s will have as wonderful an excursion to Werribee Zoo next week. Hopefully they will see the 4 new lion cubs to the zoo - 2 girls and 2 boys. Next year all Victorian schools have received a small amount of money to assist with a swimming event/program for each school. Across the state, the funding has been allocated, according to the enrolment in one year level; however schools may decide what they think will best suit the schools needs, eg a school may run a one day of water safety for the whole school, a program for just one year level e.g. Foundation; a year 5/6 lifesaving program or a program for only non-swimmers. The funding will assist with the instruction. I will provide more details in 2018. If you access the school grounds from the front of the school (Mowbray Cres), you will have noticed that during last weekend, a number of trees and bushes were removed from the front fence line. A number of gums, including the beautiful gum between the 3/4 playground and the west rotunda have been felled. Our trees are regularly inspected by an arborist and we are alerted to those that pose a risk. The Buildings and Grounds subcommittee and school council authorize the removal of the trees and it was also decided to clean up and replant the fence line. The staff and some of the parents had a chuckle that they were looking at the carpark on Monday morning, wondering what was different. On Saturday we get to showcase our KPS superheros at the Djerriwarrh festival parade commencing at 11.00am down High Street Melton. The participating students are meeting at 10.15am, however if your child/ren are not participating we hope you will find a great vantage point along High or Mackenzie Streets to cheer the students and staff along. ~ Learning Together FORWARD PLANNING Saturday 18 th November Djerriwarrh Festival Parade Tuesday 21 st November Year 1/2 Werribee Zoo Excursion Friday 24 th November School Mini Fete Monday 27 th November Foundation 2018 Transition Day ~ Very Hungry Day Monday 27 th November Wednesday 29 th November Teeth on Wheels Tuesday 28 th November Foundation Year 2 ~ Athletics Sports Thursday 7 th December Foundation 2018 Transition Day ~ Specialist Sessions Tuesday 12 th December Foundation 2018 Transition Day ~ Classroom Orientation Year 6 7 Orientation Day Year 6 Graduation Dinner Wednesday 20 th December Step-Up-Day Friday 22 nd December LAST DAY TERM 4 ~ 12.30pm DISMISSAL Tuesday 30 th January 2018 First day Term 1 ~ Years 1-6 Monday 5 th February Foundations students commence full time Monday 26 th February Curriculum Day ~ Students not required at school STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS Student of the week awards are made each week and announced in the newsletter on a Thursday. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Thank you to everyone who attended the Year 3-6 concert, ‘Pass the Remote’ at the Kurunjang Secondary school gymnasium, last Thursday night. The gym was filled to capacity and families were rewarded to the organization, planning and choreography of each of the classes in years 3-6. FUN IN FOUNDATION

LUNCH ORDER DAY

Foundation students have recently participated in a “Lunch Order Day” as part of their learning about counting and money. Our menu consisted of items costing $1 and $2 and everyone was given a budget of $10. Students spent the week working

out which items they wanted and how many of each they could afford. This lead to lots of counting and recounting. Some of us used 10, 20 and 50 cent coins to skip count. The experience was a perfect example of open-ended, authentic and memorable learning.

ATHLETIC

HOUSE SPORTS

On Tuesday the 28th of November, the Foundation – Year 2 students will all be

required to make sure they have a school hat and water bottle to bring along to their Modified Athletics activities. It would be highly recommend that you put sunscreen on your child/ren for the day as they will be out from 9am-1pm.

Parents/guardians are welcome to come along and watch their child/ren participate in the different activities set up for the day.

Parents/guardians please remember that if you are taking photos on the day which have other children in them that they are not to be uploaded to any social media.

It would be appreciated if children could wear at least one item of clothing in the colour of their house to add to the atmosphere of the Athletics Sports.
