Georgia Laminating Plant Works Together and Stays Safe!

June is National Safety Month, and the Georgia laminating plant employees have always been an example of

what safety looks like in the mill. On June 16, 2016, all of the employees from the Georgia laminating plant

and the General Manager of Engineered Wood Product Operations, Derek Ratchford, enjoyed a safety award

lunch. The employees received a Canfor jacket and polo for their zero incident safety record for 2015. There

were also 10 employees that received a Selco Geneve watch with the Anthony Forest logo during this

celebration for 15 years of service.

In addition to the National Safety Council safety topics being communicated to employees in June, the

Georgia laminating plant holds a safety slogan contest each year. Each employee has the opportunity to

submit safety slogans, and then they are voted on by all hourly employees and narrowed down to the top

three. A final vote for the winning slogan by employees determines the winner. This year’s winner was

Jeanette Williams, finger jointer lumber feeder, and she received $100 in gift cards. The banner displaying her

winning slogan will be hung on the wall at the breakroom until next year.

Confined Space Rescue Simulation

According to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), about 90 deaths involving confined spaces occur every year. Unfortunately, two-thirds of those deaths are workers killed while trying to rescue someone else from a confined space. Some of the dangers that confined spaces pose include lack of oxygen, poisonous gases, liquids and solids suddenly filling the confined space or releasing gases into it when disturbed, fire and explosions, residues left behind that can give off fumes, hot working conditions, falling objects, poor visibility, and substances entering through piping such as gases, hot substances, or water. Every second counts when an employee becomes incapacitated in a confined space. Knowing the proper procedures and the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required to enter confined spaces could save lives. On Thursday, March 31, 2016, Georgia laminating plant employees conducted a confined space rescue simulation with representatives from the Washington Fire Department on site to consult and observe. The simulation involved an employee entering the dry kiln boiler fire box. Procedure requires that before any employee can enter a confined space, Wilkes County EMS and the Washington Fire Department must be notified and a permit completed. For the simulation, the employee put on the required white poly disposable jumpsuit, goggles, gloves and other applicable safety equipment and entering the confined space. He then laid down to mimic distress. The attendant, who also had the proper PPE to enter the confined space, then radioed for assistance for a fallen employee. Someone was directed to call 911 for help. Once the employees trained in emergency medical aid came to the area, the atmospheric checks were verified as clear for entry and the attendant was able to enter the confined space to rescue the fallen employee. The attendant crawled into the space and maneuvered the fallen employee toward the firebox door, head first. Several employees then pulled the fallen employee to safety and assisted the attendant employee out of the space. The fire department had all the necessary equipment staged and ready to offer treatment at the site. Washington Fire Department Fire Chief, CJ Gilland, explained that in a real-life situation, his group will take over the rescue after (1) our employees have pulled the fallen employee out; (2) our attendant/rescue employee has become incapacitated; (3) or when the confined space has become

hazardous for our attendant or trained employees to enter to attempt a rescue. If it becomes necessary for the fire department to take over, they will evaluate the atmosphere and physical aspects of the confined space prior to entry, then proceed with appropriate procedures to rescue the fallen employee. Wilkes County EMS will be standing by to assist in the rescue. It is imperative that we keep employees safe while working in and around confined spaces. This requires adequate training, proper PPE and practice entering, exiting and performing rescue simulations. Congratulations to Georgia laminating plant on conducting a successful rescue simulation. Keep up the good work!

Canfor's Travis McDonald, Director of Strategic Capital, adds the "Arkansas Razorback" logo to the gang optimizer cover for good karma. Needless to say, everyone in the sawmill loved it. It made for some good fun during the project, and to top it off, Travis is a University of Arkansas alumnus. The karma worked for the optimizer, and the new profiler for the gang worked like a charm.

Baby, It’s Hot Outside!

We have finally made it to summer! As every parent knows, it is the favorite time of year for all of our children. It is also the time of year when there is a higher rate of heat related illnesses reported. Heat related illnesses occur when the body temperature rises to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. This can lead to delirium, organ damage and even death. There are several heat related illnesses that include heatstroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps. A heatstroke is the most severe heat related illness. This occurs when the body’s ability to sweat fails and the body temperature rises quickly. Your brain and organs are basically cooked. It is often fatal. Symptoms for heatstroke are extremely hot skin, an altered mental state that ranges from slight confusion to a coma and seizures. Treatments for someone experiencing a heatstroke would be to move the person to the shade and put them in a half sitting position, call 911 immediately, spray them with water and fan them or apply ice to their neck, armpits and groin. DO NOT give the person aspirin or acetaminophen or anything to drink. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses excessive amounts of salt and water. Those most prone to heat exhaustion are elderly people, people with high blood pressure, and people working or exercising in a hot environment. Symptoms for heat exhaustion are very similar to the flu. A person would experience severe thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting and possibly diarrhea. The person experiencing heat exhaustion should immediately move to a shaded area or an air conditioned area, drink water or a cool beverage and cool their skin with wet towels or take a cool shower. If the symptoms do not improve within 60 minutes, seek medical attention. Excessive sweating reduces salt levels in the body. This can cause muscle spasms which would be considered heat cramps. Heat cramps are usually in the legs or abdominal muscles and occurs after a physical activity. Treatments for heat cramps include moving the person to the shade, drinking cool water or a sports drink, and stretching the affected muscles. The person should not return to work for a few hours after experiencing heat cramps. If the person has any heart problems, or if the cramps do not get better within an hour, they should seek medical attention. The best way to avoid any heat related illnesses is to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, wear loose, lightweight clothing and a hat, replace salt with fruit juice or sports drinks, always wear sunscreen when outside in the sun and pace yourself when you are exercising your body.
