BOUSE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETING

Tuesday Jan 13, 6pmBouse Booster Club

Come on down – everyone’s welcome!Catch up on what’s going on in Bouse!

ROADS END TO ROADS END - A World Odyssey – The Epic Voyage of the Sand Ship Discovery - 1966 CJ-5 Jeep

A bridge builder and a secretary respectively, Loren and Patty (Mercier) Upton have lived their dream; drive ONE American Made vehicle, a 1966 CJ-5 Jeep, around the world on a north/south course, all on land; Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Punta Arenas, Chile. This included the FIRST ALL LAND crossing by motor vehicle of the notorious Darien Gap that lies between Panama and Colombia. The Darien Gap crossing was 741 days, 125 miles of no roads; only dense jungles, tortuous rivers, rugged mountains and vast swamps that earned the Upton’s an entry the 1992 Guinness Book of Records. After shipping to South Africa, the Atlantic Ocean being the only legitimate water barrier, the expedition continued north from Cape Agulhas, South Africa to Gamvik, Norway. This portion of the expedition included 4000 miles of four-wheeling in Africa, a life-threatening break-down in the Sahara Desert, a heart-breaking set back in Israel and an eye-opening journey through the old Soviet Union. The entire overland journey was over 56,000 miles, thirty-four years and it has provided a lifetime of memories. The Sand Ship Discovery now resides in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame located in Terrible’s Hotel and Casino in Jean, Nevada.

For the full story with more photos, please find a link to our website, Outback of Beyond Adventures at: http://www.outbackofbeyond.com

Editor’s Note: Loren and Pat are here in Bouse for the winter, and are presenting a slide show and stories of their adventures on this lifetime dream at the Bouse La Paz Community Building on Jan 15 from 1-2:30. Admission is FREE, light refreshments will be served. What a story!

Bouse MuseumMuseum is now open!Each Thurs/Sat 10-2

Merry Christmas and Happy New YearThe Christmas Parade and Block party was a great

success. We had over 60 visitors tour the museum during the event.

A Huge Thank You to the volunteers that helped light up the museum and grounds. Special thanks to Susan Nault for all the painting she has done to spruce up the outside. And we can’t forget Rae Tway and her paint crew for the painting on the bathrooms and laundry room.

John Vannoy brought by a side by side group for a private tour after completing a 6 day PEACE TRAIL ride. We are still offering private tours if they can be reserved ahead of time.

Check out the new information plaques just completed on the Museum Grounds, already drawing attention to the outdoor exhibits.

Hope to see you in January. Please remember to drop by and sign up for our Camp Bouse Tour in February. Charlie n Dorothy.

Meet Robyn and Mike, Bouse RV New OwnersThe Vanosdalls are no strangers to the hospitality

business. They’ve operated Royalty Excursions, a motor coach company in Fort Collins, CO for over 20 years, providing all-inclusive trips around the US for seniors during the summers. They got the itch to spend their winters in Arizona, stopped by Bouse on their trip to look at a couple of RV Parks and never made it on to Yuma. We’re glad they’re here.

They’ve jumped right in and are making improvements on the park, plans include solar lighting, landscaping improvements, and more spaces.

The park now offers 68 spaces (nightly, weekly, and annual.) A clubhouse, laundry room, RO water, and lots of activities. They welcome outsiders to many of their events which include holiday potlucks, disco party, hobo stew, Mardi Gras, luau . . . but you’ve got to sign up in advance for planning purposes. Their Saturday night campfires begin at dark, and are open to drop-ins. . .but bring your own chair and beverage.

They’re just getting their feet on the ground and while I was there Sherri, from Emmett, ID, dropped by the office. They had just checked in the day before and said, “This is the friendliest people we’ve ever found at a park!” Robyn says their manager, Dan Minear, is their secret weapon. A friend for over 25 years, Dan has found his place here in Bouse and fits right in with all the snowbirds and residents.

They’re here to stay and had a great spread in the Christmas Parade! Welcome Mike and Robyn . . . and Dan!

at the Booster Hall

Please bring your settings, drinks, And a dish to share.

Everyone wakes up on the wrong side of the bed once in a while and spends the morning frowning a feeling just a little cranky. It even happens here in Bouse. Well now, anyone who walks around town once too often without

a smile or a good word runs the risk of being elected the official ‘Bouse Grump’.

This is a new idea started by one local resident as a fund raiser for community projects. Ok ... this idea is actually based on a similar idea in another community the Bulls lived in, and was suggested one morning when feeling particularly cantankerous. After an hour or two thinking about how to start this off in Bouse, they came up with a name for a new group in Bouse itself that would become like ambassadors to the fund raising effort. And so The Grumpy Geezers of Bouse was formed.

As you might imagine, being voted into the official title of ‘Bouse Grump’ is not an office that generates much campaigning. At least not by the nominees themselves. The idea is the membership will nominate and select candidates they think have been grumpy; then they work hard to SELL the votes.

Sell votes? Isn’t that illegal? The vote is simple. Each Grumpy vote costs 25 cents; the money raised goes to a worthy local cause. So, the idea of stuffing the ballot on behalf of a particularly cantankerous candidate is highly recommended. This will come as no surprise to the cynics out there... the candidate who raises the most money always wins. This may be the only election in America that you can legally buy.

Membership can be voluntary or more likely others will join on your behalf for a $5.00 membership. The membership will also find its way into the coffers for community projects (some may also find there way into the ballots ... but we won’t admit that openly) Nor will we point out that the Official Grump may have only been particularly Grumpy once or twice that year.

In fact many would know the individuals more for their community spirit and willingness to do something kind of outside the box for the community of Bouse.

To become a member of the Grumpy Geezers of Bouse or to cast your vote come and see us at the Bouse swap meets on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month at the rest area. I doubt you will miss us … at least one of us will be sitting around grumbling at having to get up at some early hour or not having any coffee left.

My Description of FootballBy Don Porter

Being an authority on many things, I would like to tell you what I know about football. Football is a strange game. Two gangs of boys or men, in different colored clothes, gang up on each other. There are about ten or eleven on each side. They wear head protectors so that when they bang their heads into each other, like rams in heat, they don’t knock their brains out. Many live to regret this in their older life. They also want to impress the other side on how well built they are. This is why they wear big shoulder pads under their shirts. To make it easier to rip up the opponent’s leg, they have cleats on their shoes.

Now, on to the game itself. Their goal is to fight a leather oblong object that comes to a blunt point on each end. They play on a big grassy lawn that has white lines on it, so they can find their way around the lawn. The lawn has tiers of seats on both sides so people can watch them tear each other up. They line up in two lines at one end of the lawn, facing each other. They prepare for mayhem. On the side facing the other end of the lawn, one player has the ball. He has another player right behind him. He has to bend over and throw the ball between his legs to the player behind him. When he does this the other line of players get mad and ram into the ball thrower’s side. Then people are running, grabbing and trying to get the ball. The player that the ball was given to is moving around looking for someone to throw the ball to before he gets pounced on. When he sees one of his team running down the grass, he throws it to him. Now the other players all try to keep the runner from getting the ball. When the runner catches the ball, he runs a little ways and gets knocked down. A referee marks the spot and they measure how far the ball traveled. Then they set up and start all over again. When a player gets the ball, he tries to get to the other end of the field. If he is lucky, he makes a touchdown. Sometimes a kicker tries to kick the ball over a couple of posts with a crossbar way up high. If he makes it, he gets 3 points. They take turns doing this in fifteen minute segments of four each. This takes at least two hours and all the world stops what they are doing while this is going on. The side that makes the most points wins. After all the bashing and banging is over, they all go out to have pizza.

Editor’s Note: This story, done by a friend of ours, takes us back to the great Andy Griffith and his football routine of 50+ years ago. We hope you had a few laughs as we go through another Super Bowl season.

“Howdy!”

A Glimpse At Arizona’s PastBetween 1875 and 1903 there were 129 stage robberies

in AZ, and 5 of them involved 2 coaches each. Contrary to the movies, in which mounted men chased down a stage and robbed it, only 3 were robbed that way. The rest were robbed by bandits on foot at a site where the stage had to slow down and they walked up to the coach with their guns drawn.

More than 200 people were involved in robbing stages, but only 80 were identified: 79 men and 1 woman, Pearl Hart. Pearl ended up spending time in the Yuma Territorial Prison.

The worst areas for stage robberies were around Tombstone-Bisbee and the Black Canyon Stage Line between Phoenix and Prescott that follows 1-17 today.

Between the PagesIt’s been a busy season already

for your Friends of the Library. And it’s not slowing down until the end of March! First on 2020’s agenda is our participation in the Ocotillo’s Annual Fun Run. Your Library Friends host the card stations. It’s not your ordinary “draw a card” hand; there’s a bit of a skill or just plain luck as you work your way through the game stations along the way. There’s bean bag throws, darts, shooting gallery, ball in cup toss, and a mini shuffleboard to win your cards. Great fun and a good desert ride. Then back to the Ocotillo for dinner, music, fun and super prizes. If you’re in for a day of fun, it all happens on Jan 18, starting at 9am.

On February 6 at 1pm is our 2nd Annual English Tea. It’s a chance for the ladies to dress up, relax and have a bit of tea, hors d’oeuvres, and some fine entertainment. Tickets will be on sale at the Booster Monday Breakfast and from Friends’ members beginning Jan l. The event will be held at the Booster Hall this year to offer more seating.

Only 6 more shopping days for our Final Chapter Book Store this season! 1st and 3rd Saturdays, 9-1 through March. Lots of good books, audio books, music CDs, movie DVDs, and some John Wayne and Star Wars VHS movies! A good selection of children’s books too for those grandparents out there. Drop by.

Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 10am (Jan 13). Come join us.”

Happy New Year to all our Patrons and to the ones who have made their New Year’s resolution to join our library! We’re sorry to change our library hours again. We hope to get back to regular hours soon. Our Assistant Librarian, Janell Carbary, was offered the secretary position at the Bouse School and after much deliberation and encouragement from Sharon and our volunteers she accepted the position. She will be missed by all of us but we know that she will be an asset to the school. We are in the process of interviewing potential candidates. Have patience with us while we go through this process, we may be understaffed but we are never too busy to give a helping hand.

Quartzsite to Celebrate Hi Jolly Daze In 1856, Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis headed a

movement to import camels from Syria and Turkey to better meet the challenges of desert travel and transportation of goods to support expansion into the American Southwest. Two shipments of camels, along with herders and trainers, soon traveled from Syria and Turkey to Texas, where they successfully transported materials to build a 1,000 mile wagon road across Arizona, under the direction of Army Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale.

Syrian born Hadji Ali (better known as Hi Jolly in America) served as chief handler for the camels, which proved to be able to carry much more weight than mules and horses and could travel farther with less food and water. Though they served Beale’s expedition well, the unfamiliar camels weren’t very popular with either horses and mules or the soldiers, and the “Camel Corps” soon died a successful—yet unneeded—experiment due to the escalating war matters. The camels are said by some to have been turned loose in the desert; others say most were auctioned off to zoos and circuses. Except that is, a few Hi Jolly kept to start a freight business along the Colorado River mining areas. After his business failed, he released his camels into the desert near Gila Bend.

In 1880 Hi Jolly became an American Citizen and changed his name to Philip Tedro, married Gertrudis Serna in Tucson and had two children. In 1885 he was rehired by the US Army where he worked as a packer and scout during the Geronimo campaign. He spent his final years mining around Quartzsite. He died in 1902, at the age of 73, and was buried there.

In 1935 the Governor of Arizona dedicated a monument in his honor, at the site of his Quartzsite grave. This monument, known as “Hi Jolly’s Last Camp” is one of the most visited spots in Southwest Arizona. The Hi Jolly Monument was recently placed on the National Register of Historical Places. On December 17, 2011, town and state officials and residents dedicated and unveiled the Monument’s National Historic Places plaque.

The Town of Quartzsite and many sponsors are planning the best parade in years!

The Parade is set for Jan 11th, 2020

This Year the monument was recognised as a Registered Historic National Monument
