Principal’s message

ANZAC Day

BHS representatives at ANZAC Day in Wakool

I was thrilled to welcome the staff and students, along

with a handful parents, to our combined ANZAC

commemoration service under the COLA on the first day

back this term. It was wonderful to share this event

between the two schools and to add our respect to this

solemn occasion.

It was an honour to have representatives from the RSL in

attendance at our successful event, including Mr Adrian

Peel who presented a moving and personal speech.

Many thanks to Mrs Hildebrand and her team of helpers

for the organisation and thanks also go to the teachers in

their support. A very big thank you to the students for

their excellent behaviour during the ceremony.

I was honoured to participate again this year in the

Barham-Koondrook ANZAC Day march and the school

captains again laid wreaths on both the Barham and

Koondrook cenotaphs. I would love to see more students

proudly march in their uniforms next year. I appreciate

that ANZAC Day usually falls within the school holidays

but it is a small effort to recognise such a large sacrifice.

Year 12 reports The year 12 reports are in the process of being finalised

and will be out to students early Week 3. Year 12

students only have two terms remaining before their

HSC examinations begin.

Athletics Carnival

We were most fortunate to have superb weather on

Tuesday for our annual Athletics Carnival. Thank you and

congratulations to all students who participated on the

day. Thanks also go to Mr Wren for the organisation of

the day as well as the team of helpers who ran events,

marked lanes, organised food, kept time and marshalled

races. The team effort made for a very enjoyable day.

Label school uniforms The weather has turned and the mornings are decidedly

chilly. At this time of year, our lost property swells as

students discard their jumpers as the day warms over

lunch and recess. One of the great things about having a

school uniform is the beautiful way our students present

themselves. Unfortunately, with everyone having the

same jumper it is very difficult to return a lost item to its

owner without some form of identification. Please

ensure that all school uniform items have your child’s

name on the label.

NAPLAN Students in Years 7 & 9 will sit the NAPLAN tests in Week

3, as will all the other students in these year groups

across Australia. The tests are used to indicate a

student’s progress in their education for their year level,

with the tests spaced two years apart to gain an insight

into how the student has developed. There is no pass or

fail but the resulting data produced from an external

provider is used by staff at BHS to target classroom

delivery at the level of the students. I encourage all

students to do their very best.

Mothers’ Day

To all our mums, I wish you a very happy Mothers’ Day. I

hope that you will be thoroughly spoilt on the day, you

certainly deserve it. Thank you to those families who

joined us at school for our Mothers’ Day Breakfast. The

Welfare committee outdid themselves with a beautiful

smorgasbord of edible delights. Well done Miss

McDonnell, Ms Bond and all their willing and able

helpers.

Winter Woollies Drive for the Community

Each year Northern District Community Health (NDCH) supports over 200

individuals and families across the region are at risk of, or are currently

experiencing homelessness. For these 200 individuals and families, there are

over 500 dependent children.

With winter just around the corner and the cold weather starting to appear,

NDCH will again be running its Winter Woollies Drive from 13th to 24th May 2019.

We are asking you to donate winter clothes and blankets for vulnerable

people in our community. All goods are given to the local St Vinnies to be

distributed to those in need over the colder months.

Goods can be dropped at NDCH offices or check with your school to see if

they are a participating drop off point this year.

For more information go to NDCH website www.ndch.org.au or call on 03) 54

510 200.

English/ HSIE Report

Commerce and Business Studies

Mrs Ryan’s Stage 5 and Year 12 Commerce classes had the opportunity this week to participate in the ANU

College of Business ‘Building Profit Game.’ This involved teams building models out of Lego in a limited time

frame. Each piece they used had a costing, and the products they made had a market value. They then had to

‘sell’ their items for a profit. The winning teams were: Stage 5 - Claudia, Maddy and Amy; and Year 12 -

Mackenzie, Matt and Jake.

Excursions

Ms Donnan’s senior Legal Studies students will embark on their excursion in Week 7. This will involve students

visiting the Supreme Court and County Courts in Melbourne.

The excursion for Stage 5 Commerce has been cancelled.

On Wednesday May 29th the Year 11 English Standard and Advanced classes will travel to Melbourne to see

the Melbourne Theatre Company’s performance of Cosi by Louis Nowra. Permission notes will be distributed

soon. This excursion will be free and has been subsidised through the Sharing the Light initiative. We thank

MTC for their generosity.

MTC is passionate about world-class theatre being accessible to all, and with our Sharing the Light program

are able to put the transformative power of live performance and storytelling within reach of more Victorian

young people and families.

Debating

Debating is starting up again this term. Stage 5 debating will be co-ordinated by Mrs Hildebrand. Miss Foster

will oversee the Stage 4 debaters. Please see these teachers if you are interested in participating.

Zohab Zee: Slam poet

Zohab Zee, Australian Slam Poet champion, spoken word artist and rapper, will visit our school on Thursday

May 23rd. He will perform after lunch in the hall. This is a whole school event and is free.

He will also deliver a short workshop following the performance for interested students. There are limited

places for this session so students need to get their names to Ms Batty as soon as possible.
