Principals Report Thank you to all parents and carers who attended our information evenings and open classrooms this week. We truly appreciate your support and feedback. Congratulations to all students for participation in sporting events this week and to those selected to represent at zone level. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their school uniform as this gives them a sense of belonging and pride. Our new digital sign is being installed this week and is a wonderful addition to our school grounds. Our little igloo building is currently undergoing maintenance with a new shingle roof and painting to occur. Wellbeing is a strong focus at IPS and as you are aware we provide breakfast to all students who want to participate. This year all students remain in the hall to eat, increasing their conversational skills. We also supply recess/lunch for students who forget their lunchboxes or are in need of support. Please dont hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. Mrs Ally Campbell Principal Good attendance helps your child establish friendships Going to school is important. It makes learning easier for your child and helps build and maintain friendships with other children. If a student has a day away once a fortnight, this would add up to 20 days in a school year. This amounts to a whole year of school by Year 10. Tips to ensure good attendance: Keep your child home only when they are sick. Advise the school of any absence. Make appointments after school time. Friends are important. Show an interest in your childs friends. Invite friends to come and play. Encourage your child to play with other children. Helping your child have a happy day at school is important for you and your child. If you are having difficulties in getting your child to school you should contact the Principal as soon as possible to discuss the problem and ask for help. The Principal may ask a Home School Liaison Officer to contact you for further assistance and advice. Proud representatives Two of our indigenous leaders, Miya Moroney and Zachariah Johnson proudly represented Inverell Public School as special guests at the Tingha Public School Badge ceremony last week. They were accompanied by Mrs Aitken and Mr Boney. After the ceremony Miyah and Zachariah joined in a game of handball with the Tingha student leaders.

Play is the Way Wilson McCaskill, founder of our school’s wellbeing program Play Is The Way, will be here for his annual visit next month. The parent information evening will be held on 19 March. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks. Play Is The Way is not just a school based program but a learning journey. Below is an article which has featured in Wilson’s teachings.

Technoference - The interference of face to face contact from an addiction to digital devices

“Social interaction from an early age is changing and we are finding that some babies at six weeks of age are not smiling and smiling at six weeks old is a key milestone. What we have noticed is a lot of parents are holding their phone or iPad and not actually looking at their child.

What worries us as paediatricians is that platform of the child’s brain might be affected. That early brain development could be affected by lack of interaction or reduced amount of interaction because parents are distracted by their phone.

These devices are very addictive. So what does it replace? Basically interacting with your child, or looking at what your child’s needs are, or responding to what your child is doing.”

Professor Desiree Silva, Head of Paediatrics, Joondalup Health Campus, Perth WA

Sport Report On Wednesday 17 Inverell Public School students made their way to Kamilaroi Oval for the boys and girls zone soccer trials. The students were put through a series of drills and a number of games, giving them a chance to showcase their talent. From these trials, Ella Gleeson, Jacqui Paton, Gabi Tickle, Sam Burns, Henry Oliver and Henry Ballinger were selected to attend the Northern zone trials in March. Congratulations to all those students who attended. This Friday, Jayvion Bowtell, Jack Morgan-Galluzo, Jack Partridge, Ella Gleeson, Tayla Hubner, Kelsie Simpson and Gabi Tickle will attend the North West basketball trials. We wish these students the best of luck. From the 35 students who attended the zone swimming carnival last Friday, Inverell Public was successful with 18 students qualifying to progress to the North West carnival to be held next Monday in Armidale. These students qualified for not only a number of individual events but also three relay events. Congratulations to these students and we wish them all the best.

Afternoon pick up Students who are meeting parents at the office in the afternoons will now be waiting in the Year 1 lunch area for parents and carers to arrive.
