Wired and tired: why parents should take

technology out of their kid’s bedroom

Australian children are among the youngest

users of the internet in the world, starting as

young as eight years old.

Whether they’re using mobile phones, iPads or

the TV, most children and teenagers will use

their devices daily to chat to their friends or to

access entertainment and education.

But when children use these devices in the

evening, they can struggle to sleep, leaving

them wired and tired. They may also have difficulties with staying

asleep if these devices disturb them

throughout the night

Changing the sleeping environment

by removing technology from the

bedroom sets the scene for a good night’s

sleep.

Establishing healthy bedtime routines and

setting limits on the use of technology in the

evenings can prevent the development of

technology-induced sleep problems.

Things that can help include:

No devices in the bedroom. This

creates a bedroom atmosphere

conducive to rest.

Having a consistent night time routine.

For younger children, develop a

bedtime routine that includes between

half an hour to one hour of quiet

activities before bed, such as the three

Bs routine - bath, book, bed. This will

set them up with good habits as they

get older.

Balancing kids’ daily screen time with

exercise and outdoor time helps tire

them out physically to ensure deep

sleep.

Setting a down time for their

technology. Have the devices go on

charge at a specified time each night,

in a public spot in the house. Not only

is this good for sleep routines but it

ensures that the devices aren’t in the

bedroom for the wee hours of the night

when cyberbullying is most likely to

occur.

K-6 News

It is hard to believe that we are already into the

fourth week of school. The temperature has

certainly dropped the last couple of weeks, so

please make sure your child’s school jumper is

clearly marked. Both E and M Block have been

piling up with lost property, with school jumpers

being the main item.

Attendance has been on the decline this term. If

your child is sick keep them home, however, please

inform your child’s teacher. Our goal for the

remainder of this term is to reduce the amount of

‘unexplained’ absences.

College Photos

The College Photos will be held on Tuesday

and Wednesday the 15th and 16th of August,

Week Five. The photo timetable is included in

the newsletter. Please remember that

children need to bring their photo form in on

the day of their photo, even if they will not be

purchasing any photo packages. If you want

a family photo please visit the office for a

form.

Katanning Netball Carnival

Our four netball teams competed strongly on

Friday 28th July, coming away with a first and

a second in the different divisions.

Congratulations to all of the students involved

and thank you to Mr Jim Rhind, Mrs Tash

Burnside, Mrs Margie Jones, Mrs Smith, Ms

Crkovsky and the high school helpers.

Kindergarten Program

Our Kindy students are now at school for an

extra day each week. Mrs Kim Bishop, Mrs

Belinda O’Dea and the Education Assistants

run a fantastic Kindy program.

If you have a child who is eligible for

kindergarten in 2018, call by the front office

for an enrolment form.

District Pupil Free Day

There will be no school for students next

Friday 18th August. Teachers will be

attending professional learning on the day

across the district.

Literacy Legends

The Literacy Legends program is gaining

momentum. Thank you to all of the

parents/grandparents who are already

volunteering some of their time. This is a

program that began last term to help support

students’ literacy development. If you were a

Literacy Legend prior or would like to get

involved for the first time this term, see your

child’s teacher for information. We are always

keen for more volunteers to support the

literacy of our Year 1 - 6 students. You can

help out once a week or every day depending

on your availability. Sessions are held in the

morning, anytime from before school to

recess, as negotiated with the classroom

teacher.

Book Week

In Week Six this term it will be Children’s

Book Week. The theme this year is ‘Escape to

Everywhere’. As part of the celebrations we

will have a Book Character Dress Up Day on

Friday 25th August. There will be a special

Book Week Parade that morning to show off

all the creative outfits.

IMPORTANT: Class Requests for 2018

We are currently investigating our class

groupings for Kindergarten to Year 6 for 2018.

If parents have any special requests regarding

the placement of their child/ren, please

address them to:

“Private and Confidential”

Mr L Swann, Associate Principal K-6

Closing date for requests will be the end of

Week 8, Term 3 – Friday 8 September,

2017.

Please understand that, while we will do our

best, we cannot guarantee that all requests

can be accommodated. As always, we will

endeavour to get the best balance of

students, year groups and teachers for 2018.

If any students

would like to

donate their old

recorders, I am

collecting them for

one of our lovely

students to take to Bali to donate to the

would like to donate yours, please pop it into

the labelled box in my classroom. Thanks!

DRESS UP AS A MONSTER DAY

On Tuesday 24th July, E Block held a ‘Dress up as a Monster’ day. There were plenty of monsters as well as princesses, ghosts, dragons and other brilliant costumes. The dress up day was done as a ‘hook’ for this term’s writing topic, which is stories about defeating a monster. We hope to have inspired some exciting writing from this fantastic event and it was great to see students so engaged in their learning. Many thanks to the parent and carers who assisted in dressing children up for the day, they looked frightfully fantastic!

Year 9/10 Football

On Wednesday the 2nd of August we took a

small but enthusiastic group of boys down

town for the annual 9/10 Football Carnival

held in Mount Barker. Due to a few

unforeseen circumstances plotting against us

we started the day with only 14 players and

by the end of it we were down to 12. The boys

that did play should be congratulated on their

efforts during a very trying and hard-fought

day.

The first game was a tough one at the school

and we went down to St Joes, next we lost to

ASHS, who were the eventual winners and

then again to NASHS who also played in the

final. Unfortunately Darcy hurt his shoulder

and had to go and get it checked out; I hope

his recovery is a speedy one.

The fourth game was against Denmark and

what a game it was. Most of the boys knew

each other from weekend footy and as a

result the tone of the game was a really good

one. Mount Barker ran out eventual winners

by 4 points and sang the song for what turned

out to be the only time all day.

Our last game against Grammar was a

spirited effort that we unfortunately lost.

Thank you to Dean Wallinger who was a super

coach for the day, the boys really appreciated

it. Thanks also to Troy for doing the goals all

day and to Gracie for her work around the

boundary line. Most of all I would like to thank

all of the players for their efforts on the day,

you were all great company and you all

represented the school very well.

Bendigo Bank Katanning Primary Netball

Carnival

MBCC took four year five and six netball

teams to Katanning on Friday 28th July. All

teams had at least four games during the day,

most of them luckily inside the rec centre on a

freezing day.

Our year six girls team made their grand final

after some great games but didn’t quite score

enough goals to win the shield for their

division. Well done on being runner ups for

the first time in a long time. Well done to the

coach Margie Jones (Snr).

Mixed team one (Year six boys and girls)

made their grand final and won a really close

game with some good team play to win the

shield for their division. Well done to coach

Deb Smith and the team.

Mixed team two played some good games but

didn’t quite get to the grand final. Thanks to

Ms Pauline Crkovsky for coaching this team.

The year five students (with several year six

girls) had a win and played in several close

games during the day but they all got

valuable court time , a taste of the carnival for

next year and an idea of the sorts of skills

needed to compete.

My thanks to the four Community Service

Students (Jordan West, Gracie Gibson, Indi

Rutter and Emily D.G) who each went with a

team and umpired all their games.

The teams’ achievements reflect the students’

positive attitude to training sessions where

almost everyone attended. My special thanks

to Margie Jones (Snr) and Mrs Burnside for

running the training sessions at the college.

The day finished with presentations to the

winning teams and the runner ups by several

directors of the Mt Barker and Cranbrook-

Tambellup branches of the Bendigo Bank.

Lastly, thanks to Mrs Kelly Judd and her team

who make this carnival run so smoothly.

Interschool Cross Country

The 2017 interschool cross country was held

at Mt Lockyer P.S. on Thursday 22nd June.

Despite several early showers, the weather

held off all day. Congratulations to Mr Paul

Hockey and his helpers for a well-run and

managed event. Our students are to be

commended for their efforts in training at the

college in the weeks beforehand with the

resulting handicap shield win on the day. The

students represented the college with great

sportsmanship and great effort towards the

team score. Special thanks to the parents who

came to encourage our runners and Cara

MacFarlane who was the CSS helper for the

day.

Thanks to Mr Swann who helped so much with

the training and the organising.
