As this will be the last newsletter our year 12 students receive, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank them for the tremendous effort they have made throughout their time at Home Hill State High School, and the affirmative impression they have made in their final year at the school. I wish each and every one of them all the very best in their future endeavours whether that be tertiary education, further training or direct entry into the workforce. At the same time, we have also been busy with the follow on from the successful school review earlier this year towards developing the next school strategic plan. There has been a great deal of interaction across the school community in utilising the review feedback in progressing this process, and setting our key priorities for the next four years. I am very comfortable with keeping the general direction pretty similar to the past track, including maintenance of our well understood Learning, Performance, and Citizenship framework to identify 3 broad key priorities for our school. These are essentially around 1) students effectively accessing learning, 2) high level student result expectations, and 3) aligning the school with our local community. With the planning now in the final stages I am now happy to share these key priorities for the next four years with our broad community, which you can find on page 13. Finally, I am sure many of you would have noticed the rapid progress on the MPS over the past couple of weeks. With most of the framework now up the dimensions of this building are becoming clearer. We should see a great deal more construction over the next couple of weeks as completion is still expected to be finalised prior to the end of the year, and it should be a special occasion when we hold the first school assembly for 2018 in this site. Newsletter November 2017 Principal’s Report We are rapidly nearing the end of the 2017 school year, and have been busy with assessment, subject selection, SET Planning and teaching during the school day, and Town of Origin, Sports Awards and Awards Night, and the Burdekin Students’ Ball outside of school hours. There is not a moment to slow down or pause during this term.

Awards evenings allow us to celebrate what is so great about our school and our students. Students who received awards across the areas of academic, cultural leadership and sporting achievement should be very proud of their success. The Burdekin Students’ Ball had been eagerly anticipated by students, and a great deal of effort had been put into the preparation of the venue and personal appearance. It is always a great evening for our students, and those of the other Burdekin secondary schools.

We are not far from saying farewell to our year 12 students.

Next P&C Meeting

They are to also co-ordinate and assist PE Staff with the running of carnivals.

We were extremely fortunate to have sailor Aaron Linton as our Guest Speaker this year. Aaron is sometimes known as the ‘fastest sailing canefarmer in the world’. Aaron is also a former Home Hill SHS student and has many state and national sailing titles under his belt. Aaron spoke on the challenges he has faced combining his sport, work and family life. We appreciate that Aaron took the time to attend our awards ceremony.

A big thanks as always to the various people who helped on the night and in its preparation, especially the year 12 Physical Recreation and year 12 PED class who did a fantastic job with speeches and trophy organisation. Well done to all students who received awards on the night and thank you for your efforts in sport this year.

Another successful Town of Origin was held at Home Hill High on Sunday 8 October. Rugby League, Cricket and Netball featured in the program, with all sports being strongly supported. The P&C would like to thank all the volunteers who manned the bar or assisted in any other way. This is a major fundraiser for the school and a fantastic community event.

Year 11 Students Complete VET Course

This year, as part of our year 11 SET Course, students have been given the opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways. As we approach the end of the year, many of our year 11 students have successfully completed the course. Not only do the students receive a nationally recognised VET certificate, they also get 4 QCE points. Congratulations to the year 11 students who have now completed the course.

The year 11 Biology class woke up early on Sunday 15 October and made the voyage to Cape Upstart on the VMR (Volunteer Marine Rescue) boat. Upon arrival we unpacked and Joe Linton gave us a rundown of the history of VMR, the Molongle boat ramp and Cape Upstart. While we were at the Cape we conducted field studies of different ecosystems such as the sand dunes, mangroves, the gorge and the rocky shore. At each different area we looked at the flora and fauna in our transect area and then made a quadrat and examined that area more closely. From each area we took soil and water samples. The wet weather hindered some of the activities we had planned so we watched movies on the old VHS player in the hut. The highlight of the trip was watching Rachel pick up the sea cucumber at the rocky shore. On Tuesday morning we packed up and loaded our bags onto Mr Bojack’s boat and got back on the VMR and headed for Molongle. We walked to the old boat ramp and looked at the mangrove areas around Molongle when we arrived. Back at school we examined the pH and salinity of each soil sample and suspended solids in the water samples to gain a better understanding of the ecosystems. While it rained most of the time, our Biology class loved the trip and we had heaps of fun. A massive thank you to Mrs Thomas, Ms Poli, Mr Bojack and the volunteers at VMR because without them the trip would not have been possible.

Nearly 370 glamorous students from the four local high schools graced the red carpet as they entered the Memorial Hall last Friday evening for the annual Home Hill Harvest Festival Student Ball. There were many proud parents and family members who filled the bleachers and lined the walkway to get a glimpse of the fantastic display of vehicles, formal gowns and stunning attire worn by our very handsome and elegant young adults. Mrs Profke and Mrs Warcon snapped dozens of photos which were uploaded and watched on a continuous slide presentation inside the hall. “Carnival” was the theme this year which was epitomized by a spectacular display of fairy lights and glitter. The hall and lights were truly a spectacular sight. Students entered the Memorial Hall through a beautifully lit doorway created by students from our Student Ball Committee with assistance from P&C members. Once inside the students danced the night away to the beats of local DJ Brendan Ford.

P&C President, Richard Wall kindly guided the night’s proceedings. The 2017 judges: Miss Katelyn Lucey, Mrs Brooke Vass and Tyler Guides had the most difficult task of picking the Belle, Beau and Special Mentions as well as the SASS and SWAGGER awardees for the night from a short listed group of six boys and six girls. As well as the above awards, a category titled “Miss Elegance” was again sponsored this year by Spearritts Jewellers. The following students received this year’s awards:

Belle: Kelsey Rye (BCHS) Beau: Eugene Burelli (ASHS) Miss Elegance: Olivia Licciardello (BCHS) Runner up Belle: Paige Roncato (BCHS) Runner up Beau: Jared Giardina (BCHS) Sass: Sarah Furlong (BCHS) Swagger: Jesse Thomasson (BCHS) Best Dressed Couple: Reece McCubben & Briellen Carter-Mathews (HHSHS) Special mentions Girls: Libby D’Alessandro (HHSHS), Julia Nosworthy (BCHS), Grace Clive (BCHS) and Amaya Castrejana (BCHS) Boys: Stuart Clive (BCHS), Bradley Wright (BCHS), Kai Northwood (ASHS), Ky Whittred (ASHS)

A big thank you goes to all our wonderful and very generous sponsors. Another thank you goes to the ladies from Empower Photography for taking some wonderful photos. We would also like to extend our thanks for the hard work and dedication of Ms Mavanna and Mr Muldoon and many parents, especially Sheree McKaig, Annmaree D’Alessandro, Amanda Daley, Peta Kiehne, Lee-Anne Gelling, Janine Warcon and Fiona Ricca and to all the others who contributed money and/or supplied and served the lovely food.
