Give me Lord, a gentle attitude to those I meet. Give me Lord, a humble and grateful heart.
Give me Lord, tender love and compassion for all. Amen.
Welcome back to Term Four. I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and is ready for an action packed and exciting final term for 2017. I must congratulate all of our Tigers supporters on their premiership win, you never know it could be the Saints’ turn next year! This term we have a number of events to look forward to including Andrew Chinn, Bike Ed, our Junior School Performing Arts Mini Concert, First Aid in Schools, Advent, Transition, Graduation and Christmas. Towards the end of Term Four, each child will also bring home his/her End of Year Report and Learning Folio as a summary of his/her learning during Semester Two. Welcome This week, we welcome Tara K and her parents Jodee and James to St Benedict’s. Tara joins us in Three/Four G. We also welcome Mark S, his parents Sally and Mina and his brother Martin to our community. Mark has joined us in Prep/One F.
School and Parish Fundraiser Thank you to all of the dads who were involved in organising our fundraiser for Katherine Gilhooley on Saturday afternoon. A special thank you to John H and Ryan Q for all of their organisation and to all members of our community who were able to attend. The afternoon was a wonderful example of what makes St Benedict’s the amazing community it is and I know that Katherine was deeply touched by the afternoon. If you were unable to attend and would still like to support Katherine, you can make a donation through her Go Fund Me page at https://m.gofund.me/singlemumfightingleukemia.
Division Aths Congratulations to Max T and Noah M who represented St Benedict’s at the
Division Athletics Carnival yesterday. Max competed in the Triple Jump and came third with a personal best jump of 7.81m. Noah competed in the 100 m sprint and came fourth in that event. Well done boys on your terrific achievements.
Uniform With the beautiful Spring weather upon us, it is time for us as a school to change from our Winter uniforms into our Summer uniforms and wear our hats. All children are required to wear their school hats at both breaks and during PE and Sport classes from next Monday. If your child does not bring his/her school hat to school, he/she will need to sit in the shade during these times. During the early weeks of Term Four, the weather can change quite dramatically and so all children are able to wear either their Winter or Summer uniforms for the next two weeks. All children are asked to be wearing their Summer uniforms from Monday 23rd October. Please also

ensure that your child/children are wearing the correct socks and shorts with our Summer uniform and not parts of our Sport uniform on non sport days. This week I have sent an email to all families regarding the introduction of summer shorts for our girls. In order to make an order with our uniform supplier, we need to have a minimum order from our families. If you are interested in purchasing a pair of shorts for your daughter, please email me by Friday 21st October. The shorts will be navy and come in a size 4, 6, 8, 10,12, 14 and 16. The cost of each pair of shorts would be $30. Thank you to the parents who have already emailed me their interest. Walk to School Our Walk to School initiative has started in a really positive manner and runs throughout all of October. Our SRC members have hole punches to punch the children’s passports if they have walked, scooted or rode their bikes to school. This initiative encourages our children to be more active and all of our points will be tallied at the end of the month and entered onto the Walk To School website. Prizes are awarded to the schools who have the highest number of their children walking to and from school.
Late to School/ Early Leave Passes This term we will be introducing Late to School/Early Leave Passes at our office. These passes are a further way of ensuring that our children are signed in and out if they arrive after our morning or afternoon attendance rolls are taken. These slips need to be filled in by a parent or caregiver who is either dropping the child at school or picking him/her up. The slip is then sent to the classroom to ensure our classroom teachers know that your child has arrived or been picked up. From Monday 16th October, all children arriving at school through the front office after 9am will need to be signed in by their parent or carer and also signed out if they are leaving early. If you have any questions about this new arrangement, please feel free to contact me. Children's Documentation Last term, a number of families received a letter asking for documentation to be included in your child’s file. These documents include a copy of his/her birth certificate, baptismal certificate and immunisation certificate. Thank you to the parents who have copied these documents and forwarded them to us. If you have not sent a copy of any of these documents to the office, please send us a copy as soon as possible. 2018 Enrolments If you are contemplating or have already arranged for your child/children to leave St Benedict’s at the end of 2017 (except Year Six students) and not previously let me know, please let me know as soon as possible. I am currently organising classes and staffing for 2018 and need to know our numbers.

World Mission Day 2017 The Holy See sets aside this Sunday as a special commemoration for the Mission of the Church. You can view
Pope Francis' message for World Mission Day here: "Mission at the Heart of the Christian Faith"
Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time– Year A Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14 Gospel Reflection
Who you ate with in Jesus’ time was very important – it reflected your own status. To
share table with people who were regarded as ‘lesser’ by nature of their lifestyle or
illness was seen to lessen the status of other participants. Sharing table was as much
a political action as it was a social one. This week’s gospel is an important one for
understanding Jesus’ message of an inclusive kingdom. The king invites all the ‘right’
people to attend his son’s wedding banquet but they shame him by refusing his
invitation and murdering his messengers. This would have been an extraordinary
action in Jesus’ time. An invitation to the table of your social superior would not be
rejected lightly. To try to save face and regain some honour, the king sends his servants to bring in
people off the street – the poorest and least socially acceptable people. The invitation to the people off
the street, ‘bad and good alike’, is a reflection of Jesus’ own attitude to sharing table. Jesus ate with those
who were regarded as unworthy: tax collectors, prostitutes and sinners. It was one of the harshest
criticisms of Jesus made by the Pharisees and Scribes: ‘He eats with tax collectors and sinners!’ One of
Jesus’ strongest messages was about the inclusive nature of the kingdom and he lived it day to day. His
inclusive table fellowship was a powerful statement about the fact that the kingdom is an invitation to all
– rich and poor alike, regardless of status in this world. This parable highlights the invitation to join in the
kingdom of God that has been rejected by the Jewish leaders but taken up by the ‘lesser’ people of society. The wedding banquet is a metaphor for the kingdom of God. Have you thought? – Inclusivity
This gospel parable reflects the inclusive way in which Jesus lived his life. In many ways, Jesus was a
scandal in his society because he didn’t obey the social boundaries. He was very clear in being inclusive
and attentive to those who were normally shunned. Today, those boundaries are just as clear and easily
identified but the methods of excluding people have perhaps become a bit more subtle. Who are the
‘shunned’ and ‘left out’ in our society today? Where do the boundaries lie? Who would Jesus be reaching out to and seeking to include in today’s society? Gospel Focus – ‘How did you get in here?’
In light of the inclusive kingdom metaphor in this passage, the final portion of the gospel may be a bit
troubling to readers. When a guest is not wearing a wedding garment he is cast out of the banquet. We
might say that being invited at the last minute the guest was unable to find suitable clothing. It is a sign
that although he has been an unlikely inclusion in the banquet, he has not made any effort to respond to
the generosity of the king and take up one of the cloaks that would have been provided and thus give due
honour to his host. This is symbolic of those who refuse to change their ways and do not live as followers of Jesus even when they have been included in the kingdom. © Greg Sunter

Year Three/Four News Dear Parents,
We hope you have all had an enjoyable and relaxing break. Over the next two weeks Year Three/Four will be
learning about Time in Mathematics, in particular elapsed time and calculating the time between various
intervals. In Reading we will be focusing on identifying the purpose and intended audience of texts and how
this affects the style and format of the writing piece. We will also be writing news reports. Our topic for Inquiry
this term is Health so we will be learning about the importance of nutrition, physical activity and social and
emotional health.
We are continuing with our Burwood Aged Care Visits. These afternoons have been very special and if you are
able to come and walk with us on a Wednesday afternoon from 2.15pm it would be greatly appreciated.

Year Five/Six News Welcome back everyone. We trust you had a relaxing time over the holidays. Many of the children were keen to share how they spent their time during the holidays. We’ve come back to beautiful spring weather so remember to pack sun hats and asthma puffers (if required). We will continue our Bike Ed sessions for the next two Fridays so if you are available to help that would be greatly appreciated. Five/Six T will have their session from 11.30 to 12.20 and Five/Six SP from 12.25- 1.15. The children will be reciting their poems next week, they have had six weeks to complete this task. If you have time, give them an audience and some feedback on their presentation. We are always amazed at how well they do. A note has been emailed and sent home to all the Year Six children regarding photos for the Graduation Slideshow. Please be on the lookout for this note or email and keep in mind, it’s a big job for Damian D. Please don’t leave this until the last minute. In Maths this term we have started work on Interpreting Data. This involves the children formulating Mathematical statements related to tables and graphs. Following that we will be identifying and measuring angles, working with mass, volume and capacity, lots of revision especially with worded problems and the four operations. If you or your child are struggling with any of the concepts covered please look at Mathletics and discuss your understandings. In Religion this semester we are looking at traditions. In the month of October, we will be looking into Mary’s story, the Rosary and some of the Marian traditions. The children have been asked to bring their Rosary Beads if they have some.
In Science/Geography we will continue investigating the journey of water, From Rain to Drain. This involves the different systems to provide water and drain away our waste water and the impact humans have on the natural environment. In English this term we will be continuing with our reading comprehension strategies. This term we will be looking closely at the strategies of: Cause and Effect An effect is what happens and a cause is why it happened. Compare and Contrast Is a way of looking at the text and thinking about the similarities and evidence that are evident in text structure/text layout/content and information. Figurative Language Is the use of imagery in the form of a simile, metaphor, idiom, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia and hyperbole to create word pictures and vivid descriptions. Our Writing focus will be on the text types of procedure, explanation and persuasion. The persuasive component will be centred around the preparation and presentation of class debates. Enjoy the term, Deb, Tanya and Mandy
Andrew Chinn Concert
On Tuesday October 24th, Australian religious songwriter and singer Andrew Chinn, will be visiting our school to share his songs with our children. Andrew's songs such as 'These Hands', 'Rainbow' and 'An African Blessing' are used in classrooms and liturgies around Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. We use many of Andrew’s songs in our school Masses and liturgies. Andrew will work with the children during the day, choosing children to be on stage with him at the evening concert. Parents are warmly invited to be a part of the celebration of faith and fun in the afternoon or the evening. The evening concert will take place in the Year 9 Emmaus Campus Hall, next to St Benedict’s and please park in the Church car park. The evening concert will begin at 7pm. As a fundraiser for Caritas we invite families to make gold coin donation at the door. We always look forward to Andrew’s visits as they are very inclusive of all our children and Andrew is a wonderful songwriter, performer and storyteller through song.

Mathematical Literacy
Mathematical Literacy is a subject driven by life-related applications of Mathematics. It enables learners to
develop the ability and confidence to think numerically and spatially in order to interpret and critically analyse
everyday situations and to solve problems.
Problem Solving Strategies
Drawing a diagram is the most common problem solving strategy. Very often, a problem solver needs to draw a
diagram just to understand the meaning of the problem. The diagram represents the problem in a way we can “see”
it, understand it, and think about it while we look for the next step.
Try these problems using the ’Draw a Picture or Diagram’ strategy:
● Murat has decided to plant grapes in the garden behind his house. His neighbour Volkan has grown grapes
successfully for a long time and has given Murat advice about how to plant vines. Volkan told him to plant
them three meters apart in rows that are three meters apart. He also told him to leave at least three
meters between each vine and the edge of the garden. Murat has measured the size of his garden and
learned that it’s a rectangle with sides of 25 meters and 35 meters. How many vines should Murat buy?
● Brett built a tower using four different coloured milk cartons. The red carton was below the green carton.
The blue carton was above the yellow carton which was above the green carton. Which carton is on top?
● Five families are building project homes in an isolated area. Roads will have to be built to connect each
house with all the other houses. How many roads have to be built?
● A snail is climbing up a drainpipe. Each day the snail climbs 8.5 meters. Every night it rains, however, and
when it rains the snail slips back down 1 meter. How many days will it take the snail to reach the top of the
drainpipe, which is 45 meters high?
● Eric’s back garden is 10 metres by 14 metres in size. Each day Eric rides his tricycle down the three metre
long path leading from the back door of his house to the garden and around the very edge of the garden
four times. Then he rides back up the path where he leaves his tricycle. How far does he ride each day?

FOOD
WASTE
FACTS Food waste or food loss
is food that is discarded, lost or uneaten. The causes of food
waste or loss are numerous and occur at the stages of production,
processing, retailing and consumption.
Food waste is a growing area of concern with many costs to our
community in terms of waste collection, disposal and greenhouse
gases. When your rotting food ends up in landfill it turns into
methane, a greenhouse gas that is particularly damaging to the
environment. Food waste costs money and also wastes valuable
water and energy resources used to produce the food.
In Australia:
● The Government estimates food waste costs the Australian
economy $20 billion each year.
● 4 million tonnes of food ends up as landfill, enough to fill
8,400 Olympic sized swimming pools.
● One in five shopping bags end up in the bin = $3,800 worth
of groceries per household each year.
● 35% of the average household bin is food waste.
● Nearly three million people are living in poverty, one quarter
are children.
Over 644,000 people now receive food relief each month, one
third are children
What can you do at home?
● Shop smart and realistically
● When cooking, don't over-serve food
● Save – and actually eat – leftovers
● Store food in the right places
● Avoid clutter in your fridge, pantry and freezer
● Treat expiration and sell-by dates as guidelines
● Keep track of what you throw away
● Donate to food banks and farms.
