Pastor Ben’s Corner “Neighboring when the Garage Door closes” “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7 I have mentioned it in several sermons lately, especially as we have been working our way through our sermon series on “The Art of Neighboring”, but it is worth repeating. We often find ourselves living in a garage door up and garage door down style community. When I say this I mean that our interactions with our neighbors often feel like quick niceties, maybe we say hello as we pass them on our way to work or other activities (when the garage opens) saying hello again when see them as we get back home and the garage door closes. To this point I have focused on what we can do in order to (figuratively speaking) keep the garage door open, seeking to establish deeper and more meaningful relationships with our neighbors. In this article I want to switch gears and talk about what, if anything, we can do when people reject and/or ignore our attempts to build a relationship with them. Or another way to put it in sticking with our metaphor, how can we neighbor when people shut their own garage door? First of all, good job! When people reject our attempts to go deeper in our relationship with them it means that we made the effort! That in and of itself is worthy of praise! After all, if neither person is willing to put forth the effort---to open the door---then there is no possibility of a deeper relationship, so taking that first brave step is good and admirable. Second, we need to remember that is their choice. Often times we take rejection as a personal insult, rather than taking a step back and trying to see things from their perspective. Rejection often says more about the other person than it does about the

person who was “rejected”. Maybe they aren’t ready, maybe they have so much on their plate that the thought of another relationship is just too overwhelming, maybe they are going through a hurt they aren’t ready to overcome. The “maybes” are endless and may not have anything to do with us. If anything, opening the door may be the first step in helping them see past whatever “maybe” they are experiencing. The early followers of Jesus experienced this. How many communities were they driven out of? How many times did they even face persecution because they were willing to open the door for people to come to know Jesus? I will tell you…A LOT…and yet they were still willing to open the door. Finally, what can we do when “the garage door closes”? We can shower them with prayer, prayer and you guessed it, more prayer. Prayer doesn’t require us to overstep the boundaries another person has set in our relationship with them. I am convinced that when a person “rejects” us, one of the best reactions we as believers can have is prayer for that person. Prayer changes things. People often try to misuse the verse from Matthew chapter 7, thinking that if they believe enough God will give them what we think we need or want. This is FALSE! If you read the verse in its context (and please do), then it will become abundantly clear Jesus is promising the Lord knows what you need more than you do, and we are called to trust in Him. The same is true for our neighbors. The Lord is in control, and knows what they need better than we do! So lift them up in prayer and TRUST that God works through and in prayer. In short, we can not control what doors others will close. What we can control is how we respond. Do we respond with rejection, or do we respond with unwavering, unquenchable reliance on the power of prayer and reliance on God? My prayer is that we would lean on prayer and trust in God. Your brother in Christ, ><>Pastor Ben

LYLE’S LINES

Sunday Morning Bible Classes Organic Outreach – The book and DVD for this class includes the subtitle, “Sharing Good News Naturally” and that’s exactly what this class is intended to do - to help each of us share the good news of Jesus naturally. The truth is, most of us want to share our faith, but we don’t want it to feel awkward, uncomfortable, or unnatural…for them or us! This class will

help you pass on the good news of Jesus in a natural way. No memorizing Bible passages or learning a new “system” – just discovering how to share Jesus as you live your normal life. Join us each Sunday morning from 9:45-10:40 in the Auditorium. (For those who attended this class in the spring, this is NOT a repeat. For those who weren’t in this class – you won’t be lost or feeling left out.) Grief Share – Grief, particularly at the death of a loved one, can seem overwhelming. But encouragement and help can assist us in the journey from mourning to joy. Grief Share is a class/support group that is designed to help those experiencing grief in that journey. This class, led by Donna Kaser, begins Sunday, October 1 during the education hour in the Community Room. For more information you may talk to Lyle Heggemeier or Donna Kaser. Monday Evening Bible Class A Man Named Martin: Part 3 – The Movement This class, a continuation of the Sunday morning class from this summer, focuses upon the history and theological issues that arose out of the Reformation and still impacts us today. There were so many things happening in the 1500s – theological, societal, and technological changes – and so much of who we are (Americans) and what we believe (Christianity) is a direct outgrowth of that time period. Join us each Monday evening from 7:00-8:15 in the Community Room as we learn and discuss these key events. Lyle Heggemeier leads this class which will conclude on October 9. The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul – This six-week study will begin on October 16 and conclude November 20. We’ll learn about Paul – his writings and his life. This first century rabbi traveled thousands of miles because of the call he received. But in looking at his call and life, we also see how God has called us and what it means to accept that call to make disciples. Join us each Monday evening from 7:00-8:15 as Lyle leads us through this study utilizing materials with Adam Hamilton.

================================================================================ Strong Museum of Play Event Returns Thrivent is once again going to host an evening for any and all families to enjoy the Strong Museum of Play at minimal cost! Join us on Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 6:00-8:30! Everything is included at the museum – the butterfly garden, the carousel, and all of the exhibits! Invite your friends – everyone is welcome!

From the desk of Dianne Christensen, Director of Music As we approach our Reformation Sunday celebration in this special anniversary year, it seems fitting to reflect on the music of the most important figure of the movement, Martin Luther. Luther, a very musical man who played the lute and loved to sing, believed music to have utmost importance in worship, and he advocated full congregational involvement. He maintained that songs convey biblical insights, strengthen our faith, and touches our souls. During Luther's time, professional musicians mostly performed the music of the Catholic Church. The music was polyphonic, which means that it had several melody lines performed simultaneously, and therefore was not appropriate for congregational singing. Luther did not wish to abandon the musical heritage of Catholic Europe, but rather he tried to add accessible congregational music to be used in conjunction with it. He desired that all people have first-hand experience with music through congregational singing. In this way, they could be better exposed to the educational and ethical powers that Luther believed music possesses. In the 1520s, anthologies of sacred songs began to be printed. Two centuries later, J.S. Bach harmonized many of the melodies found in these books. He straightened and simplified the rhythms of the tunes, giving them regular patterns of mostly quarter notes along with a few longer note values. This style of hymn writing was common during the 18th century and is most familiar to us today because many of the hymns in American hymnals are written in this style. However, the chorales written during Luther's time often consist of more irregular and syncopated rhythms in the style of Renaissance folk songs. These rhythms often gave the hymns an exuberant dance-like quality. The chorales or hymns that Luther wrote for his German congregations were usually strophic, meaning they have the same melody for each stanza, and were therefore easy to learn and remember. Probably the most famous hymn written by Luther is "Ein feste burg" (A Mighty Fortress is Our God). This hymn, translated into many languages from the original German, has withstood the test of time all over the world. Composers through the centuries have based many compositions on it. The song now can even be found in the Catholic hymnals. The text, based on Psalm 46, depicts the triumph of God's Kingdom through Jesus over the forces of evil. The original rhythm written by Luther for this tune has the typical Reformation Era syncopated and dance-like feel. Our hymnal includes this hymn in two versions, both as Luther originally intended it and the Bach re-harmonization, which consists of all even note values. This year we will experience the majesty of the Bach harmonization, which is most commonly used today. It will be accompanied by our bell choir and some Faith brass players. Wishing you joy in your worship.

Dianne

Children’s and Family Ministries The school year has begun. If your family is anything like our family, it means that your busy lives just got busier. School, homework, practices, extra-curricular activities, musical instruments, etc. The challenge for us as parents is how to find time for God in our busy lives and to demonstrate and reinforce that priority in our children. We look forward to walking together with you all as we navigate these issues with our family and with yours. Let us know if we can be of assistance in any way. –Steve and Carrie Ford It is a busy time for Children’s and Family Ministries September 10th was Bible Sunday Three-year-olds received their own copy of My First Hands-On Bible. Children in third grade received the Hands-On Bible during worship. Third graders will be using this in Sunday School through 6th grade. Does your child have reading minutes each week? Consider having them read from their Bible one of the days each week. If your child (age 3-6th grade) has not received a Bible from us in the past, let us know and we will get one for them. Sunday School Has Begun All of our children are learning about the story of Moses as a baby, the story of the burning bush, the plagues and the Exodus. We hope that your children will be able to join us.

Sunday School offerings are once again being donated to charitable organizations. In addition, the money from the bottle returns from the garbage cans located outside the FCCNS office and near the Jr. FLY room are donated as well. Or, you can bring your cans directly to Nickelback Bottle and Can Return Center (its located behind Hancock Paints on 659 Ridge Rd). You can just let them know that it’s for Faith Lutheran Church, leave the cans and they will put the money in our account. A special thank you to the Doty family for bringing the cans and bottles from church to Nickelback.

Save the Dates OCT. 13 Fun Night: All 4th, 5th and 6th graders from Faith and their friends are invited to attend Fun Night at Faith on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. This is a time to get to know other older kids from Faith better through games (X-Box, party games), food and to hear God’s Word through a Bible lesson. Invite a friend (or friends)! You never know what event will be the one that begins a lifelong relationship with God. Friends must also currently be in 4th, 5th or 6th grade. Permission slips and more information is available on the Children’s and Family Ministry bulletin board. OCT.29 Trunk or Treat is on October 29 at 4:00 PM at Faith. Children (and adults) are welcome to wear their costumes and go car to car “trunk or treating” in the parking lot. This is an all ages event. We would encourage Faith friends and members without young children to attend and hand out candy or help with logistics (parking lot safety, etc.). Trunk decorating is encouraged but not required. There will be a trunk decorating competition (winner will get a trophy!). Also, The Magic Guy will be performing a magic show in the auditorium prior to trunk or treating. If you would like to help out with this event, contact Steve and Carrie Ford. This event is open to friends, neighbors, relatives, community members, etc. We would encourage you to invite at least one family that does not currently attend a church.

“Where your child can grow in body, mind and spirit”

Faith for Charlie Thank you for your generosity! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Adamson family on July 15. We raised over $1200 with this fundraiser and the GoFundMe account. Funds raised were used to offset the costly medical expenses. Many thanks to all the volunteers who set up, cooked, and cleaned up at the event. A very special thank you to the Red, Hot and Blue Band for taking the time out of their busy schedule to play for us. They were amazing! RIP Charlie. You will never be forgotten. New School Year Begins FCCNS has wrapped up the summer program and is looking forward to a new school year. The summer went by so fast, but there are several exciting new adventures in store. We just had a blast with Space Week, followed by a delicious ice cream social (we can never get enough of that), and trying to stay cool with water play on warm days was a splash. Julia Thayer leads our new music program. She brings her expertise and love of music to the children every Thursday morning. Creative Dance and Soccer Shots have also begun. As we approach October, the themes of the month will be Apples, and On the Farm. The children will be tasting and exploring the many different apples from the area as well as learning about various farms. Welcome New Staff A huge welcome to three new staff members: Desiree, NyJae, and Alex. They all attend Nazareth College and come to us with experience and a great love of children. FCCNS is in need of volunteers to rock babies, read stories, share your skills, or any area that you think could be helpful to our mission.
