The deadline for Facts of Faith is the third Monday of each month. Articles for next month are due to the church office on Monday, July 17th.

July 2017

“Faith Lutheran Church is committed to

nurturing and protecting our youngest members

by providing a safe environment for children.”

Facts of Faith

Pastor P’s Perspective

Anyone who has ever been to a baseball game or other sporting event in the United States has heard “The Star-Spangled Banner.” One of my earliest memories of our national anthem was hearing it sung loudly and proudly by members of my family and community under the Friday night lights at Miamisburg Viking football games. When I was in school, every student was taught to sing it with reverence, and the whole of Mark Twain Elementary did just that every Monday morning, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Unfortunately, most people today experience “The Star Spangled Banner” as a solo-only event. It seems that the practice of singing it together has almost wholly disappeared from our culture. As a result, many Americans have forgotten the words, and more importantly, the meaning behind them! Yet, truth be told, even we who know it don’t know it as well as we think we do. We tend to remember only the first verse… “O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light…”

This year, as we celebrate our nation’s independence, perhaps we might take this time to reflect on the last verse of our national anthem. It carries a message that is important for us as Americans—one that is all too infrequently heard in our nation today. I pray that you will be as blessed by them as I have been.

Grace and peace, Pastor Paul+

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation. Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.' And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

PAGE 3 FACTS OF FAITH

Faith now has a wonderful opportunity to serve locally in Habitat for Humanity's outreach

ministry. Greater Cincinnati Habitat's Eastside Coalition of 11 area churches is starting to build

three new homes just four miles away in the village of Lockland. We're looking for around five volunteers for the following Saturdays:

July 8, August 19, September 23 & October 21. No special skills or tools are necessary,

and lunch is provided!

Also, if you have the interest and time, please consider becoming a regular volunteer with our

coalition, joining us on Saturdays and Wednesdays as the builds progress.

For more information about registration and volunteering, you may contact our

congregational Habitat Rep, Ken Clark, at: [email protected] or (513) 231-6238.

Fundraiser for Mt. Healthy Food

Pantry ~ July 5-7th @ Bob Evans

You can help support the Mt. Healthy Food Pantry

by dining at any of the four local Bob Evans

Restaurants between Wednesday July 5 and Friday

July 7. Present the coupon below with your check

and the pantry will receive 15% of your purchase.

Can’t print out this document? Look for yellow

coupons on the Social Concerns table in the

Narthex.

The Mt. Healthy Food Pantry is supported by 12

local churches, is staffed entirely by volunteers

and serves struggling neighbors in our 45231 zip

code. Faith Lutheran has supported the organiza-

tion with our time and talents since its inception in

2007. The mission of the organization is

“transforming lives in the 45231 communities by

providing services with Christian love & dignity.”

For more information about the pantry, visit http://

www.mthealthyalliance.org/home.aspx

PAGE 4 FACTS OF FAITH

Wernle Representative coming to Faith July 9th

For many years members of Faith Lutheran Church have generously supported the

Wernle Youth and Family Treatment Center in Richmond, Indiana. On July 9th,

Pastor Cliff Nunn will speak at both worship services about the work they do with

troubled boys and girls. Their mission statement reads: Wernle is a family focused,

child centered agency providing opportunities for the growth and development of

troubled children and their families - individually, interpersonally, and socially - through caring programs

and healing relationships which are reflective of God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ.

Envelopes will be provided in the bulletins for July 9 and July 16 if you would like to support their mission.

For more information, please contact Ralph Goetz at 522-6303 or visit http://www.wernle.org/

Tour of Cincinnati Observatory Sunday July 9th @ 2 PM

Do you know how Mt. Adams got its name? Are you familiar with the role the Observatory played in the

development of Cincinnati’s commerce or the beginnings of the National Weather Service? If not, this 30

minute tour will be sure to fascinate you.

Join your friends from Faith for a 30-minute guided walking tour of the Cincinnati Observatory facilities and

the telescope. Bring friends & family with you – the more, the merrier! The tour is free of charge, but the

facility would appreciate a $5 donation per person. We will meet at 2 PM at the facility located at 3489

Observatory Place in Hyde Park. If you would prefer not to drive, please contact Marie Goetz at 522-6303.

Sign up begins July 9th for Community Dinner July 29th

Calling all volunteers to help with the next Community Dinner on Saturday, July 29th. Look for a sign up board in

the Narthex beginning July 9th. We are looking for volunteers to help with set up, grill hot dogs, plate food, serve

food, visit with our guests and clean up. Join us for an experience you won’t forget serving the local community.

The Alberta Harker Community Dinners began in October of 2014 as a way to serve the local community, honor a

former member and to work together as a congregation with a shared purpose. The Social Concerns committee

estimates we have served up over 400 delicious meals to our neighbors as well as friendship and entertainment in

the form of magic tricks by Pastor Paul. Why not join in the fun and sign up to help out with this wonderful event?

with table-side magic tricks.

Outdoor Worship & Picnic September 10th

at Brownsway VFW

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for what has been a

wonderful tradition at Faith: Outdoor Worship and Picnic at the

beautiful covered shelter on the grounds of the Brownsway VFW the

Sunday after Labor Day. It is a great time to catch up after summer

vacations and kick off the fall while enjoying a time of worship, food,

games and fellowship. All you need to bring is a side dish. We kick

off the morning with worship at 10:15 AM followed by the picnic and

games. Hamburgers, hot dogs, brats and metts, buns, fixings and

drinks are provided (bring your own soda). Dress is very casual and

relaxed. New this year, we will have reserved parking for those

who need parking close to the entrance and someone at the

entrance to transport your side dish to the picnic area.

Brownsway VFW is located at the end of Brownsway drive off of

Galbraith Road just past the Clovernook Country Club. Stay tuned

for more information to come.

Spotlight on…Tuesday Bible Studies continue

through summer

Everyone is invited to attend Tuesday bible studies with

Pastor Paul. Each week, Pastor Paul leads an in depth study

of the readings for the upcoming Sunday. To accommodate

various schedules, studies are held in the morning from 7- 8

AM at Panera on Winton Road and from 12 noon – 1:30 PM

at Faith in Room 1. The upcoming lessons can be found in

the bulletin for those who would like to prepare ahead of

time. Pastor Paul plans to continue these bible studies

through the summer months. Please check the weekly

bulletin to confirm they will be held. For more

information, please contact Pastor Paul at 931-6100.

Spotlight on…Sew & Such continues through the

summer

The June meeting of Sew & Such was one of many celebrations. We celebrated

the return of Rose Schroeder to our activities, Ginny Brown’s birthday and two

new additions to our group - Thelma Buxsel and Anita Burgess! Anita found

her spot at the layout table and Thelma fit right in at the sewing machine.

We are proof that you can have fun and do God’s work at the same time. We meet on the 3rd Thursday of

the month from 9 AM to 1 PM to assemble quilts for refugees around the world. We take a coffee break

about half way through to break up the morning.

The effort goes on throughout the year (including summer). In the fall the completed quilts are dedicated at

a special service, boxed up and delivered to a central location to be distributed to those in need by Lutheran

World Relief (LWR). Last year, we dedicated and shipped 72 quilts to LWR!

We welcome you to join us. Come once or every month - whatever your schedule permits. There is a job

for everyone and you don’t have know how to sew. Bring a friend! Come late or leave early - whatever

your schedule requires. For more information, contact Rose Schroeder at 874-5793.

PAGE 8 FACTS OF FAITH

A look back at…1st annual Sock Hop!

The first annual Faith Sock Hop was held on Saturday May 20th. It was so well received by all ages that the

Congregational Life committee has decided to make it an annual event! If you missed it this year, you’ll definitely

want to mark your calendar for next year. Stayed tuned.

Ted Burgess said the highlight of the evening for him was winning the crazy sock contest in the men’s category for

his signature argyle socks and taking home another crazy pair of socks as a prize.

Ted Hubbard said he really enjoyed the music. It was classic music from the late 50’s and early 60’s that was

familiar to everyone.

What else did the crowd enjoy? All the makings for a super fun evening including:

A classic car show featuring Ralph Goetz’s 1956 Chevy

Contests for the Craziest Socks, Best Dressed and Best Dance Moves

Games like The Price is Right from the 1950’s and Name That Tune

Snacks and root beer and cream soda floats

A picture booth with a classic car cutout and souvenir photos to take home

The Congregational Life committee would like to thank all those who attended, as well as the following individuals

for their help with the event: Pastor Paul for designing and making the car cutout, Jo-Ann and Don Kerl for taking

and printing the photos for souvenirs, Nancy Thyberg for researching fun ideas for the event and for organizing the

Price is Right game, Roxanne for making the ice cream floats, Ralph for putting on his car show and being the DJ

extraordinaire, and special thanks to Marie Goetz for coordinating everyone!

Here are a few pics from the event. Be sure to check out the bulletin board across from the kitchen with lots more

fun photos from the evening. Have some photos you’d like to share? Feel free to add them to the bulletin board for

all to enjoy.

Ernie and Marge Nordquist enjoyed the great music.

Ralph Goetz was the DJ extraordinaire

for the evening. Here he is asking atten-

dees to Name that Tune! Note the pack

of cigarettes rolled up in his sleeve!

Everyone, young and young at heart, had a blast at the Sock Hop. Here Joel Fluegeman, Hannah Schultz, Jonathan Hammond,

Kayla Fluegeman in her poodle skirt and her friend take a break from dancing to smile for the camera.

Tina and Phil Wuorinen posed

and constructed. The license
