There is a lot of news this time round so keep reading.
By the way, if you have any photos you would like to share

LHTC TOPS FOR 2019/2020 TENNIS SEASON
From the start of the 2019/2020 tennis season, Hutt Valley
Division Interclub members could be wearing new team tops
when representing our Club. Wellington Premier Interclub
players (Wellington Region Interclub) are required by their
Premier Interclub rules, to wear team uniforms. These players
will also have the option to choose the new tops.
A sub-committee is in the process of finalising design details
and style options. The committee is also considering
funding/sponsorship options to heavily reduce the cost of the
tops to members. The photos below are just a small example
of what the committee is considering.
Our club coach, Michael, will be wearing some of these new
designs in the next couple of weeks. Look out for him on the
courts and then get in touch with someone on the
management committee as we'd appreciate your feedback.

HELP GET GEORGE STOUPE TO JUNIOR US OPEN
George Stoupe has been a member of Lower Hutt Tennis Club
for the past 8 years. He has, over that time, played in many
interclub matches, Rep fixtures for the Hutt Valley and the
Tennis Central Region. He has also represented New Zealand
in events such as Junior Davis Cup and the World Junior
Teams. He has won all the National titles from 12U through to
the 18U singles title late last year. Tennis NZ named him Junior
Player of the Year in December 2018. He has continued to
achieve wins in Junior ITF tournaments over the summer. A
highlight for George was receiving a wildcard into the doubles
main draw of the ASB Classic in Auckland in January.
George has made a video explaining in more detail his
achievements and goals for the future and has set up a go-
fund me page hoping family, friends and the Tennis
community will support him with his goal to reach the Junior
US Open. Please take a minute to click on this link to watch
and listen to George.

PLEASE NOTE: An automatic tip of 10% will be taken out
unless you specifically decline it. To do this you can change it
to $0 by selecting “other” as your tip amount then enter $0.00
to avoid leaving the suggested tip amount. If you just change
it to blank space they may take a 100% tip. The tip amount
goes to GoFundMe not George, and is what is used to sustain
GoFundMe as they do not charge a platform fee.
TENNIS CLUB MEMBERSHIP FEES
Please contact Jackie Clarke for any membership queries using the below email address:
First of all, thanks to all of you, who have been so welcoming
over my first season at the club, it’s been a very enjoyable
experience getting to know everyone at the club… And the
coaching has been great too!
The Friday Junior Interclub has come to an end until next
summer, we enjoyed plenty of warm evenings out on court
with a lot of fun and games. I’m looking forward to having
even more players along for next season as we continue to
encourage all juniors at LHTC to give interclub a go. A big
thank you to all the parents who brought along supper for our
hungry players - I know they were all very grateful.
Sunday Morning Coaching will continue to run through the
winter terms from Sunday 12 May. The summer season was
very successful with numbers continuing to grow. It is pleasing
to see each player’s skills develop and hopefully we will have a
large group moving into interclub teams for the 2019 season.
This term you will see me on court running various junior
squads throughout the week:
Monday 4.30-5.30pm: Pre Interclub Squad
Monday 6.30-8pm: Beginner Competitors Squad
Tuesday 3.30-4.15pm: First Timers Squad (6-8yrs)
Tuesday 6.30-8.30pm: Advanced Competitors Squad (s8+)
Wednesday 5-7pm: Intermediate Competitors Squad (s11-
s9)
Friday 6-8pm: Advanced Competitors Squad
And for our senior members:

JUNIOR CLUB NEWS
The 2018/19 Junior Interclub season has had a great start to
the year. The season ended on 30th March. It has been a long
post-Christmas schedule, which has given the teams more
games and lots of great challenges. Players have had a fun
time playing these matches, and the weather has mostly been
kind to us!
None of our teams got relegated post-Christmas which is great
news for all our junior players. We had one team promoted
from Division 1 to Premier Division (Lower Hutt Del Potro).
Congratulations to: MacLean Forbes, Max Henley, Toby
McCormick, Thomas Dee and Adithya
Ramaswamy
with Rochelle at the helm! Well done!
The following are the results (positions) as at 30 March for the

These results are fantastic - congratulations to the players,

his extensive and very comprehensive coaching sessions on
Friday nights. The kids have thoroughly enjoyed the Friday
sessions- lots of fun and laughter has been had by all and the
attendance has been great too!
Friday Night Coaching
Friday night coaching was scheduled until the end of term 1 to
give kids maximum coaching opportunities. The juniors have
thoroughly enjoyed these sessions, which have been very well
attended with kids taking part in lots of fun activities, doing
exercise drills and displaying some serious tennis skills.
Junior Club Champs
Plans are still being made for this annual event. With the
interclub games finishing late this term, and other weekend
school events (such as Relay for Life), the Junior Committee
are looking at alternative plans for this event – Watch this
space!
Go well.

Premier 3 was an extremely tough competition. The team
competed well to finish 3rd. Unfortunately, only the top 2

they are endeavouring to finish higher next season and achieve
promotion.

Newson & Tony Pietras
Team B. Nick Renton, Russell Holmes, Steve Parsons, Steve
Macris & Glenn Lapeth

3 of the 8 teams in Division 1 were from Lower Hutt. Our A
team won the grade, with Team B finishing 4th and Team C
finishing 6th. Congratulations to Team A for winning their
division.
Division 2 – Sam Pietras, Alex West, Jordan Beere and Brody
finished 6th out of 7 teams.

WOMEN’S WEDNESDAY INTERCLUB

MONDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
On Monday nights we operate a mix of some singles matches
and mostly doubles. You can play all doubles if you want. The
format is very flexible. I make up the draw based on who is
available a few hours before play which starts at 7:30pm. You
can opt in or out of a given night as late as 10am on the day.
Send me a message if you are keen and get on the Monday
Night League list, even if you only want to play occasionally.
We are in full swing for 2019 but can still take more players.
The standard is medium to quite good and whatever your
standard – you will get some good tennis in.

MIDWEEK - TUE
The midweek club will continue to meet over winter on
Tuesday mornings from 9.30 for casual games of doubles. All
are welcome to join us, we are a social bunch.
Jackie Clarke – Midweek Convenor
TUESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
Tuesday singles is a great opportunity to get a bit more of a
run around than the social doubles games provide. We've got a
fairly wide range of skill levels so everyone gets a competitive
game. Harry Josephson tops our table at the moment, but has
a few competitors nipping at his heels. To sign up drop
[email protected] an email.
Martin Ryan - Tuesday Night League Organiser
WEDNESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
Greetings, WNL has been buzzing away.
We finished '18 with a wonderful Xmas dinner. The works!
We've had raffles, great prizes, the Mark Hardy Cup winners,
21 tournament, a winner/loser night and even a quiz night
when we got rained out too.
We've welcomed new faces... the more the merrier. A huge
thank you to those who fill in and play at short notice. This
enables everyone who replies, “Yah”, to play. Also, a shout out
to the wonderful group of regulars who make our night fun
and/or competitive.
Our next event will be, "Our Winter Warm Up", with wine, beer
and cheese tastings. TBA
We’re always looking for new faces at any level to play, come
along and give it a go. Please email [email protected] if
you’re keen.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON TENNIS
Saturday tennis group enjoying a drink after an arduous
afternoon of tennis!! ((Going off the number of wine bottles on
the table it must have been very arduous… (ed. ))
Saturday league has had a good turnout over the summer,
especially with the stunning weather being so obliging. We
have welcomed a few more members on board and mostly
have all 3 courts occupied with everyone getting a competitive
game. The format is still from 1pm till 3 pm with a get together
on the deck afterwards.
With the autumn and winter approaching a few members will
be seeking out the warmer weather overseas but the courts
will always be available for those who want a game, weather
permitting of course.
Cheers
Tinie and Simon Jellie - Saturday League Organisers
Thanks to Graeme and Elizabeth Josephson who sent through these photos of Kathy Brabin getting a Papal Medal from the
Pope’s representative in NZ – Cardinal John Dew.
Kathy has given 40 years of service to the St Vincent de Paul
Community in Lower Hutt. She has helped run the shop in Petone, and in recent years has been involved in helping
refugees establish a home and settle in the Valley.
The Benemerenti Medal is an honour awarded by the Pope to
members of the clergy and laity for service to the Catholic Church. Originally established as an award to soldiers in the
Papal Army, the medal was later extended to the clergy and
the laity for service to the church.
MAINTENANCE
If there are things around the courts that need to be fixed,
please let Graeme know. If we don’t know about something,
we can’t fix it!
Graeme Josephson – Property and Maintenance
COURT USAGE
Club policy is that interclub, leagues and coaching have first
priority for usage - please remember to book your court.

TENNIS FACTS
1. Tennis is believed to have originated in the monastic
cloisters in northern France in the 12th century.
Interestingly, the ball was then struck with palm of the
hand. At that time it was named “jeu de paume” (game of
the palm). Rackets came into use during the 16th century.
2. Did you know that if the ball hits a player’s body or any
part of their clothing before it lands, it is their opponents
point (even if it would have gone out)?
3. Rufus – a Harris Hawk – is stationed at Wimbledon to
keep its sky clear of local pigeons. Would you believe that
this hawk has over 10,000 followers on Twitter?
As always, thank you to everyone who contributed to this
newsletter with updates and photos. If you would like the
opportunity to contribute something in the next newsletter
then send me an email and I can add you to my list of
contributors. The next newsletter will be coming out at the
start of the summer season.
Thanks for reading and see you at the club.
