Isortofwrappeduptheyearinlastmonth’snewsletter.I’dliketotakethisopportunitytotellyousomethingI’vebeenworkingonforseveralmonths.

Asmanyofyouareaware,QuaffandTheBrewingNetworkhavebeeninstiffcompetitionforHomebrewCluboftheYearforthepast3years.It’sbasicallybeenusandthemfarintheleadfor1stand2ndbutwithusunfortunatelyfinishing2ndeachyear.ThishascreatedagoodCompetitiveattitudeamongourQuaffmembers.It’smadealotofusbrewmoreandbrewbetterbeer.Competitioncanbeagoodthing.

JustinCrossleyandIwerediscussingthisatGABFthispastOctober.Weweretalkingaboutthecompetitivenaturebetweentheclubsandthatwedidn’twanttoloseperspectiveandthefactthatthisisahobbyandwe’reallinforfun.Sowedecidedthatlet’sdosomethingCollaborative,notCompetitive.

SoI’mpleasedtoannouncetheQuaff/BNNHCCollaborationBeerProject.Theplanistoget6-8Quaffmemberswhowillpairupwith6-8BNmembersandeachpairwilljointlybrewa5or10gallonbatchforNHC.Thisisnotforcompetition.Thiswillbecomesomeofthegenerallyavailablebeerforhospitalitytimeandclubnight.

Therewillbetwobrewlocations.BenchmarkBrewinghereinSanDiego,andeitherMorebeerorHereticinSanFrancisco.Thedateswe’relookingatareeitherFebruary28thorMarch7th.We’rehopingsomeQuaffmemberswillbewillingtotravelnorthforthebrewdayandthatwe’llgetsomeBNmemberscomingtoSanDiego.

I’llhavemoretoannounceinabit.TherewillbeaGooglesheetforyoutosignupforifyou’reinterested.We’requiteexcitedaboutthisandlookingforwardtosomegreatcollaborationbeers.

QUAFF FITNESS UPDATEWorking on Those Six Pack Absby Travis Hammond

BackinNovember,25ofyourQuaffbrothersandsisters(orfriendsandfamily)decidedtocompeteinaweightlosschallenge.WearetrackingourweightlossfromNovembertotheQuaffmeetinginMarch.Thethreecompetitorswholosethehighest%ofweightwillwinsomegreatprizespotentiallyincludingsomerarebeers,hikinggear,REIandFootLockergiftcertificates,orgiftcertificatesforawelldeservedmassage.

Wehad3or4hikesbeforetheholidaysswepteveryoneup.Checkingbackwiththegroupinthepastfewdays,wehaveacoupleofpeopleleadingtheweightlosspackwith10to13poundslosteach,severalguyswhoaredownabout5poundssincewestarted,somewhoaremaintaining,andacouplewhogainedsomeholidayweight.

Formostofus,it’snotaboutwinningthecompetition.It’smoreabouthavingagroupofpeoplewhoareplanningactivities,invitingotherstojoin,andsharingfitnessandnutritiontips.We

haveMikeSangiorgi(acertifiedpersonaltrainerandbeerenthusiast)workingwithus.

Ifyouareinterestedinjoiningourgooglegroup(emaillist)letmeknowandI’lladdyou.It’stoolatetojointhecompetitionthistimearound,buttherearedefinitelygoingtobeplentymoreopportunitiestojoinusforanactivity(usuallyfollowedbyabeer!).Hopetoseesomeofyououtthere.- TH

Anyone who has been to Benchmark Brewing will immediately recognize their camping and hiking theme. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of camping with Jim Akin on our Quaff Campouts. Not only is he a master of Dutch oven cooking, but he’s also been known to share a bottle or two of aged Wee Heavy if you are lucky enough to catch it at the campfire. I’ve noticed that Jim sometimes wears a belt buckle from Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico, where I spent some time as a Boy Scout back in high school.

WhenBenchmarkinvitedQuafferstocomeupwithideasforbeerstocollaboratewiththemon,anideapoppedintomymind.

Ever heard of GORP? It’s what scouts call a simple trail mix of “Good Ole Raisins and Peanuts”.

EveryoneseemstobeexperimentingwithbrewingpeanutbutterbeersthesedayswithPB2driedpeanutpowder,andI’vebeencuriousaswell.

Weheldaplanningsessionwherewemunchedtrailmix,drankbeers,andtalkedthroughtherecipe.Mattthoughtit

wouldbefuntomesswithpeoplebyincorporatingtheseflavorsintoalighterbeer,sowechoseEnglishSummerAleasabasestyle.OnSaturdayJanuary10th,myself,JimandMattAkin,BrianCarl,andmyfellowEaglescoutbuddyJeffHermann(whohappenstobeoldfriendswithMattaswell)gottogetheratBenchmarktobrewupa20gallonbatch.NoneofushadbrewedwithPB2,raisins,orevenchocolateinalighterbeerbefore,butIthinkwefigureditout.

ThebeerwillbereleasedatBenchmarkonSundayFebruary15that10am.Comeondownandtryitout!Bringyourownfavoritetrailmixtoshare.I’llalsobecelebratingmybirthdaythatday,soitshouldbeextrafestive.

WhileonabusinesstripinCrane,INIdecidedtostayintheclosestmajorcityabout30milesawaycalledBloomington,homeofIndianaUniversity.Ifyoustaydowntownonthesquareeverythingiswithinwalkingdistance.Therearealotofgreatplacestoeatanddrink.

OneeveningwalkingoutofmyhotelIdecidedtowatchtheColtsplaytheBroncos.AsIwaswalkingdownthestreetIsawfolksstartheadingtooneplaceinparticular.BrothersSaloonlooksliketheplacetobe.SoIfoundoneseatleftatthebarandgrabbeditquickly.Thespecialwas$3Premiumdraftsor$8Pitchers.Thatwasquickmath!Pitcheritisplease.IwaspartakingoftheBellsTwoHeartedAlewhichwasverytastyastheColtsbeattheBroncos.TherewassomuchscreamingandpartyingitfeltlikeIwasatthestadium.SothenextnightwastheOhioState/OregongameandIthoughtthatwouldbetheplace.Notascrazybutveryfun.InoticedacoupleoftapsatthebarthatsaidQUAFFonthem.IaskedthebartenderifIcouldtakeapicturetosendtomylocalQUAFFersbackhome.

TheylookedatmefunnyandsaidifyouwantedmoreinfoyoushouldjusttalktoTrentattheendofthebar.NosoonerdidhesaythatandTrentcameovertochat.Hesaidwhydon’twefinishuphereandIwillwalkyouovertothebrewery.WhilewalkingTrenttoldmethestoryofhowQUAFFOnBrewerybrokeoffofBigWoodsBrewerytointroducemorecraftbrewswithanewbrewmaster.

TheBeers:WhilethereItriedtheirYellowDwarfandanewPorterthatIdonotrememberthenameof.Iknowthatbothwereverysmooth.TheYellowDwarfisanAmericanWheatAle.Ithadalightfloralwitbeeraromaandfinishedcleanbutnotdry.Theporterhadagreatchocolate/coffeeflavorandwentdownsmooth.IthenhadaglassoftheirCrossHareDoubleIPA.I’manIPAguyanditwasuptheresomewherebetweenIdiotbyCoronadoandDoradobyBallastPointwithalittlemoreAmbercolorandflavor.

Afterfinishingourbeerswewalkedabout4blockstothebreweryandIaskedTrenttogetapicofme.
