FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Thank you to all the staff and parents for ensuring a very smooth start to the new school year. It has been a
busy and a most productive five weeks.
This year you will receive a copy of the next Business Plan. This has been the culmination of a consultative
process with the staff, the School Board and the P&C.
Once again our emphasis is on quality teaching and learning and student performance. The analysis of
relevant data, the resourcing of programs and personnel to provide extra assistance to individuals or small
groups and raising our standards and expectations are all aspects of this undertaking. The expectations of
ourselves, our students and our community, is to ensure High Performance and High Care which remains an
Education Department focus.
We are continuing the PATHS program and have introduced Smiling Minds as a means to address both
students and staff health and wellbeing.
In collaboration with the staff and the school board the Dress Code has been revisited and there have been
some minor inclusions.
At Bull Creek we work together as partners to support the children in our care. The staff provide
opportunities for child development both academically and social and emotionally.
If you have any concerns it is important that they are addressed with you child’s class teacher as soon as
possible and then with the Associate Principals or the Principal if a suitable outcome is not achieved.
Welcome to the 2019 school year.
We have 366 students in 14 classes.
The classes are as follows :-

Last week we were entertained by the students from B4 who presented a very enjoyable and thought provoking assembly item
centred on the value of Respect. Congratulations Mrs Allier and the students from B4 for reminding us of the importance of this
school value and how we can demonstrate it.
Noah was Champion Super Series winner and at the Hopman Cup match between the USA and Switzerland Mixed Doubles, he was tasked with the coin toss. He is pictured here with tennis greats, Roger Federer and Serena Williams. Esteanne played between the main matches. What a fantastic experience!
Congratulations to our new Head Boy and Girl, the Prefects and the Faction Captains.
These elected children along with our Year Six students provide a voice for the student
population and are good role models for the
younger students. The wonderful tone of the
school and the good behaviour is a reflection of
the great example our older children provide. I
am looking forward to working with these
students throughout the year.
Important Dates:
Faction Swimming Carnival 12 March 2019
In response to parent feedback we have held swimming trials in preparation for the Faction
Swimming Carnival. These trials enable the placement of students in the appropriate heats, based on their demonstrated
swimming ability. For children who cannot complete a 50m swim various novelty events will be held so that they have the
opportunity to participate in the carnival. Thank you to Mrs McCarthy for the time and effort she has put into this huge
undertaking.
School Photos 21 March and 25 March 2019
Once again Kapture will take individual and class photos. Please ensure your child is wearing a clean school uniform which
includes hair tied up and no jewellery, nail polish nor makeup.

Before and After School
The school day begins at 8.50 and finishes at 3.05. If children arrive before 8.30 they must sit in the under covered area.
Parents staying with their children should sit in the under covered area also. Teachers’ rooms will be open at 8.30 in the
morning to allow the students time to organise their day and school closes at 3.05. Monday morning SRE begins at 8.30.
Also children may only remain at the school under the direct supervision of their parents. School rules should be observed at all
times. At 3.30 pm the toilets are locked by the cleaners.
No child may remain on the school grounds without their parent as there is no teacher supervision at this time. LOSCCI is on
site to provide out of school care.
Thank you for taking the time to read and action this newsletter.

WATTLE 3
We have had a busy start to the term in Wattle 3. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting
to know one another and our new classroom.
Our focus for Mathematics this term is Place Value. We have incorporated our growing
knowledge of the topic with our co-operative Kagan structures. We participated in a
Quiz Quiz Trade activity as a class and had a lot of fun doing it. This activity helped us
to consolidate our understanding of hundreds, tens and ones. It was an entertaining
and interactive way to support our learning.
We have also been using the Smiling Minds program to explore mindfulness this term.
We have learnt many new skills. Did you know that mindfulness meditations don't
mean just laying down on the floor? We have experimented with laying down or sitting,
we have brought our attention to our different senses and even explored eating and
moving mindfully, always coming back to focus on our breathing. Many of us have
found that doing these mediations helps us to feel more calm and relaxed. We are
looking forward to continuing to improve as we exercise our brain to support our
mental and physical wellbeing.
We are looking forward to the year ahead in Wattle 3.

WATTLE 7
Wow! What an amazing start to the year we have had in our magnificent Wattle 7 class. We have all been learning about how important we are and how each of us is special. We
enjoyed the story of Thelma the Unicorn and created some incredibly beautiful Unicorns in our Art lessons. We then added some sentences about what makes us unique. Next we
all read the Rainbow Fish and thought of some wonderful ways in which we can share with and care for each other in our class and school. We made the most beautiful
Rainbow Fish and discussed the character traits of the Rainbow Fish. Our Year One students wrote some fantastic stories about what types of characteristics they would have
if they turned into a Rainbow Fish. We discussed the meaning of many interesting words such as shiny, plump, glittery and sparkling many of which were included in their stories. The children have really loved reading their stories to each other and to the class. We
really are shining brightly in W7.

SCHOOL NEWS
This term our focus is on creating self-portraits and trying out some of the styles of artists who
favour portraits as their subject matter.
W3 has been working on placement and proportions of facial features, while W1 and W2 have been
looking at contemporary artist Sandra Silberzweig. Silberzweig has synethesia where she sees
colours differently- she can taste, smell, feel and hear them. S5 and S6 are looking at the portraits of
Amedeo Modigliani. His subjects characteristically had long tilted faces, long necks, small
undetailed eyes and closed small mouths. B4, B5 and B6 have been looking at a contemporary artist
called Ian Sklarsky who uses a technique called ‘blind contour’ where he looks at his subject but not
the paper and draws with one continuous line. Some children have found this challenging but by
stepping out of their comfort zones and attempting to see in a new way there have been some
interesting portraits with lots of character. I can’t wait to see the drawings translated into a wire
drawing /sculpture in coming weeks.
This year we are planning to have a Sculpture Walk at Bull Creek in Term 3. The idea will be that
the school community will plan and create sculptures based on the theme of Spring Time (as
families, small groups or individually) that will be displayed on the school grounds as a way of
engaging the community in a fun and social way of learning more about art. There will be more
information to come but I thought it would be great to start thinking about it now.
Also, Sculpture by the Sea is on again until Tuesday 19th March at Cottesloe Beach. I hope many of
you are able to go and visit this wonderful free family exhibition and possibly get some inspiration
for your own sculptures for the Bull Creek Sculpture Walk!
