Education Week

What a fabulous day we had last Wednesday to celebrate Education Week. It

was great to see so many parents, carers and grandparents spending the

morning in classrooms and having lunch with us. Congratulations to those

students who received awards at our special assembly and to all classes for

showcasing the wonderful things that are happening in your rooms.

Congratulations must also go to Jett Robards-Hassel, Eloise Hector, Miss

Howard and Mr O’Connor who all received awards at the Gateway

Community of Schools awards night, held at Thornton Public School on the

Wednesday night. And to Kindergarten and Mrs Bourke for your great Walk

the Dinosaur performance.

Hall Progress

If you have been in the

grounds lately you will have

noticed that fencing has been

erected and the piers have

been set ready for the hall.

Unfortunately there has been a

slight hold up with the delivery

of the modules. At this stage

we are looking at a delivery

date of 10th October.

Spelling Bee

This Wednesday is our first Annual Spelling Bee. Students have been busy

learning words over the past weeks and participating in ‘mini bees’ in their

classrooms to see who would make the finals for Wednesday. If your child is

in the spelling bee finals, you should have received an invitation last week.

The times for the spelling bee are as follows:

Early Stage 1(kinder): 9.15am

Stage 1 (yr 1/2): 9.45am

Stage 2 (yr 3/4): 10.15am

Stage 3 (yr 5/6): 12.10pm

At the conclusion of each bee, those students who have come 1st, 2

nd or 3

rd

will receive a medallion. Everyone who has participated in the bee will receive

a certificate. Those students in Stage 2 and 3 who come first or second, will

participate in the Regional Spelling Bee, to be held later this term.

Successful Grant Submission

We received word recently that we were successful in

obtaining a community grant that Mrs Chapman applied

for last term. The $4000 grant is for the establishment

of vegetable gardens in the school, complete with water

systems and shade covers. Once we have received the

grant money, work will begin on building the garden

beds.

Lost property

Our lost property bin is

OVERFLOWING! Mrs Keeley

has asked that if you are

missing a jumper or jacket to

please come and have a look

through the basket. The large

pile that we currently have do

not have names in them, which

makes it very difficult to get it

back to the students when they

leave them lying in the

playground.

Book Week

Book Week is fast approaching! Last week you would have

received a letter from Mrs Crozier regarding our upcoming

Book Week parade, which is going to be held on Thursday 24th

August. The parade will begin after lunch at 12pm. Parents

and carers are more than welcome to arrive early and have a

picnic lunch before the parade begins.

TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY

Our school, like many other

public schools in the state, will

participate in a Department of

Education initiative: the Tell

Them From Me student

feedback survey. The survey

aims to help improve student

learning outcomes and

measures factors that are

known to affect academic

achievement and other

student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on

student-wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching

practices. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to

provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they

think about school life, how engaged they are with school and

the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in

Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From

Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. We

wish to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey

is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes

to complete. It will be administered during school hours

between August and October.

THE PARTNERS IN LEARNING PARENT FEEDBACK

SURVEY

Our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning

parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of

surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student

engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions

about different factors that are known to impact on student

wellbeing and engagement. More information will follow about

the parent survey.

Just a reminder, even though the library is currently being used as a classroom, students are still able to borrow and return books. If you have books to be returned please leave them at the office with Mrs Keeley, and Mrs McCann will collect them and mark them off. Please return signed permission notes for K-2 to attend Beresfield Library on Friday 25th August as part of our Book Week celebrations. There is no cost involved. Thank you.

P&C NEWS

YEAR 6 NEWS Science & Engineering Discovery Day All Year 6 students enjoyed visiting Maitland Grossmann High School on Monday 7

th August. They participated in

a range of hands on activities that involved problem solving and teamwork, resulting in a positive experience of science and engineering.

Canberra and Snowy Mountains Excursion 2017

Stage 3 students are super excited with our Canberra

Excursion just over a week away. If you did not receive

the key information hand out including what to/not to

bring please collect one from Mr O’Connor.

The following is information in regards to the Parliament

and Civics Education Rebate (PACER). This rebate has

been included in the overall cost of the excursion for all

students.

Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Thanks

purchase valuable reading tables, resources, sporting

This program begins this Wednesday July 26, so let’s

support our wonderful school. All you need to do is

collect the stickers each time you shop at a Woolworths

store (1 sticker for every $10. spent) and send them

along to school, either loose or on a sticker card. There

will be a collection box for these in the foyer.

Ask grandparents, neighbours or friends to help you

collect stickers.

Thanks.
