NEWSLETTER ~ TERM 3 - No. 2 ~ 3 August 2017 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK—Aaron Richards ENROLMENT 2018 Pre-enrolment numbers are very high for the 2018 school year. It is highly likely that we will not be able to offer a place for all the applications we receive. Parents can help us ensure that we can provide places for all local Catholic children by informing the school if your family is moving away. This will enable us to identify the gap which can be offered to a Catholic child on the waiting list. So, if your child will not be returning to St Joseph’s School next year, please let the school office know immediately. If your child is turning five next year and you have not already submitted an enrolment form, please do so now. Enrolment applications must be submitted to school no later than the 1st of October. SCIENCE FAIR A huge congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent our school at the Canterbury-Westland School’s Science and Technology Fair on Saturday 9 September: Year 8—Jonty Blacklow, Cassidy Brunel, Geonseung Kwak, Hamish Patrick, Thomas Brosnahan, Andrew Black, Gemma Lysaght, Chloe Grassam-Groufsky, Greer Gillies, Brennt Entese, Holly Myers. Year 7—Zoe Blacklow, Natasha Sidnell, James Caddick, Christian Gilbert, Carys Spratt, Stijn Lutters, Ollie Lutton, Finn Parkyn, Noah Newsome, Isaac Jones, Jayden Ralston, Nica Lutton-Boag, Angus Nevin, Emma Lamb I would also like to acknowledge the support of Miranda Satterthwaite who judged the school’s Science Fair. ST BEDES VOLUNTEERS Today St Joseph’s School hosted a number of Yr 10 boys from St Bede's College. The boys have volunteered to help at the school each Thursday over the next few weeks. It is fantastic to be working closely with our Catholic neighbours. ROAD SAFETY Congestion at the school gate is not ideal. We have pedestrian, cyclists and motor vehicle converging on the school simultaneously. We should not be mistaken to think we are the only school that is affected by traffic management issues. What makes the situation less burdensome for our Catholic community is our ability to put our personal needs aside to ensure our children can travel to and from school safely. This will require compromise from everyone involved. What we need to do: The Vagues Road footpath is congested so we need cyclists and scooters to walk their devices 50 metres clear of the gates. We have the assistance of very generous parents who help us operate the crossing. They are becoming increasingly concerned with cars parking on the yellow lines leading up to the crossing. Please do not park on the yellow lines. U-turns are a dangerous maneuver that frustrates other drivers. It often confuses the Road Patrol students. I strongly encourage parents to plan their route to and from school so you do not need to complete a U turn outside school. The drop off and pick up process would work smoother if parents observed the parking restriction of 3 minutes outside the school. It would be more effective if this parking area was used as a kiss and go where drivers remain in their cars. The school is doing everything we can do to improve the situation. We are currently working with the Christchurch City Council to develop a Travel Plan. We are also working with the Parish to ensure that future plans include better access and parking for the school as well as easy access through to the Main North Road. In the meantime we need patience and collaboration to make our school and safe place for our children. SCHOOL REPORTS AND STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE Achievement portfolios have been sent home with all Year 3-8 students last Friday. The portfolios contain the student's interim achievement reports. As detailed in last week’s newsletter, Student-Led Conferences will take place from Monday to Wednesday next week. If you haven’t already done so, please book you conference by going to the School Interviews Website and enter the event code C95rs https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz RED BLACK AND MUFTI DAY TOMORROW Tomorrow we will have a “Red and Black" Mufti Day to support the Crusaders in the Final this weekend. Please wear red and black clothing to school and bring a can of food to donate to the St Vincent De Paul Food Bank. Go the Crusaders!

ROAD SAFETY Congestion at the school gate is not ideal. We have pedestrian, cyclists and motor vehicle converging on the school simultaneously. We should not be mistaken to think we are the only school that is affected by traffic management issues. What makes the situation less burdensome for our Catholic community is our ability to put our personal needs aside to ensure our children can travel to and from school safely. cyclists and scooters to walk their devices 50 metres clear of the gates.

We have the assistance of very generous parents who

help us operate the crossing. They are becoming increasingly concerned with cars parking on the yellow lines leading up to the crossing. Please do not park on the yellow lines.

U-turns are a dangerous maneuver that frustrates other

drivers. It often confuses the Road Patrol students. I strongly encourage parents to plan their route to and from school so you do not need to complete a U turn outside school.

smoother if parents observed the parking restriction of 3 minutes outside the school. It would be more effective if this parking area was used as a kiss and go where drivers remain in their cars.

FAITH FACT 31 July to 4 August

What is Pope Francis motto and what can we learn from it? Pope Francis’ motto, "Miserando atque eligendo", means lowly but chosen; literally in Latin 'by having mercy, by choosing him'. We are all called to show mercy by living out the Gospel values shown to us by Jesus.

LITURGY Mercy 4 is leading the Liturgy tomorrow in the Hall at 11am and 11.50am. Parents of Mercy 4 are most welcome to attend. CONFIRMATION PREPARATION PROGRAMME 2017 An enrolment form for Confirmation at St Joseph’s Parish, Papanui has been emailed to all the caregivers of our Year 8 students. The Sacrament will be administered at the 5pm Mass on Sunday 29th October 2017. The programme is being run by Irene Maguire and starts early September, with the help of our Parish Youth Group Leaders and will meet on Sunday evenings. Enrolment forms are also available on the Parish website and from the school and parish office. WE NEED YOUR VOICE! Calling all parents who like singing. Did you enjoy singing at school? Do you sing in community choirs? Ken Joblin, Director of Music at St Joseph’s Parish Papanui needs ten voices to join the new St Joseph’s Choir. Please contact him if you would like to join, cell: 021 054 2462. Rehearsal night and parish Mass time yet to be determined. The majority will decide. They need your voice to form the Choir. For more information, visit the Music Section under General of the St Joseph’s Parish website. EX-ST JOSEPH’S SCHOOL PUPIL Good luck to Andrew Howison (brother of Cameron
