Newspaper AdvertsContrast and Comparison Analysis

-In order to gather ideas and information for my Newspaper advert, I have analysed 4 different newspaper adverts for documentaries in

order to identify effective techniques and methods.

Page 2: Newspaper advert comparisons

1-Jamie’s Great Italian Escape

Inclusion of the channel 4 logo to communicate which channel the documentary will be aired on; Discrete to blend with color scheme.

Main title of the documentary present, as well as time and date of broadcast. White bordering makes text stand out well with background. Typography matches that of the Channel 4 logo.

Use of graphic mise en scene is eye catching

and conveys themes of the documentary (real

Italian culture and food, animal activism). Male in the corner acts as

Italian stereotype (Iconography) to

continue advertising important themes of

the documentary.

Muted blue and red color scheme used to create an urban feel to the documentary; becomes eye catching and makes the reader feel like they can relate to the common, modern ideas of the documentary.

Presenter of documentary, Jamie Oliver, present in the center and foreground of the image; Attractive point when targeting audiences and promoting documentary. Fact the presenter is upside down suggests he is an exciting, down to earth celebrity.

2-Inside Incredible AthletesInclusion of the channel 4 logo to communicate

which channel the documentary will be aired on; Discrete to

blend with color scheme. Accompanied by documentary title

and time/data of broadcast. Same style

and format of presentation used as “Jamie’s Great Italian

Result” in order to communicate a

Channel 4 Documentary. Same

format used as a convention of Channel

4s programs.

Employs muted oranges and blacks, which creates a contrast with he iconic colours of the British flag in order to emphasise the subject of the documentary, which the British athletes. The colours help to evoke a sense of pride as well as an ideology around the athletes.

Iconography of the Great Britain flag used to attract attract target audience, as well as evoke a sense of British pride. Makes the documentary appealing and conveys the elite athletes featured in the documentary.

Paralympic logo featured; symbol of Paralympic sport and elite performance that will attract target audiences.

Slick, simple style used for maximum effect. Portrait layout important for highlighting the subject of the advert.

Mise en Scene: Iconic GB uniforms juxtaposed with the prosthetic limbs of the athletes creates an association. Blue and pink coloration reaches out to all genders. Olympic spirit reinforced by the Olympic Stadium in the background.

3-BlackfishBlack and white colour scheme, symbolic of the orcas in the documentary. Creates a dark and striking tone to convey the serious issue of animal captivity.

Portrait orientation emphasizes the size of the orca in the photo; this immediately pushes forward the idea that keeping orcas in small spaces is wrong.

Focal image introduces subject of the documentary, Tilikum the orca. Image is eye catching and appeals to large target audience of animal lovers/activists. Certain sense of mystery created (Barthes Enigma Code).

Title and slogan present; silver coloration for contrast. Long, slender typography in a uniform shape, representing the whales uniformity and the way they have to live the same, repetitive lifestyles.

Use of a quote above title; Raises appeal for audience as they are impressed/reassured by a good reputation.

Slogan used to create a sense of mystery about documentary and intrigue the audience to watch the film; hints at the themes that will be present.

4-AfricaStriking image of monkey is eye catching and intrigues animal fans; Direct mode of address from monkey looking at camera engages audience into the advert. Sense of mystery/enigma is created. What is the creature?

Green colour scheme contrasts well with the animal; Green is tropical and refreshing to represents the forests of Africa in the documentary. Colour scheme is not overpowering in order to not divulge attention away from the monkey.

Animal positioned in foreground to symbolise how nature is at the heart of the documentary.

Logo of the documentary positioned in corner so that audience can understand what the advert is promoting. This advert is a preliminary print, in order to raise awareness and talk about the documentary a while before its release.

Limited, simple text and typography in order to not diverse from the iconic symbol of the monkey; Acts as a way of sparking interest in the upcoming documentary by telling audiences to be aware of the release.

Inspiration for My AdvertAs I am advertising a documentary concerning sport, I’m very intrigued by the “Inside Incredible Athletes” documentary. The iconography of the GB uniform is a very effective advertising technique which I will consider for my advert.I will also have to consider whether I look at using props/objects as my images, or I look at using subjects in the documentary as my focal images. The typography I use will also be important in attracting my target audience as well as conveying the themes and tone of my documentary (Hypodermic Needle Theory).
