IT'S ALL A RIDESuccess?Part of me says yes and the other half of me says no. I don't like being part time

directors I think if we were on this process we should have been on it fully not,

part time. I feel it was hard for them to respect us straight away because the

way we were introduced, they have seen us around college, they know who we are and we HAD

to lead workshops with them before we were introduced as their directors. I think we should

have been introduced like I was in Beano, where we were with the directors and there was a

clear distinguish between director and actor as Robbie made it very clear to the Beano

company our role and what we will be doing and from then they gave us that respect; with the

newspaper company it wasn't there from the start. There company was very hard to control

because of focus and professionalism and most of them were still in the school mentality, I felt

I was TEACHING them which should not have been my job, I should not have to tell them to do

this I feel we should have worked with them in their TIE or end of year so that they were in a

place where they had a first show and they know the standards and basics of being a

professional actor in the space. On the other hand I did like being on this project with Erol, I

felt that I was running the show most of the time because I came in with an attitude of don't

fuck with me we are here to work and have a professional relationship, where as Erol wants to

be liked all the time and wanted them to like him. It was harder with a smaller group for me I

found, I'd prefer directing in groups but with a bigger company.

The part of me that thinks this process was successful is the final product and how it all came

together, not for my group but for everyone and how we made the show into what it was as

well. I feel I was successful with directing in some cases because I have the freedom to the

actors to create, I didn't give the, a script and the easy was out like Sams group but I didn't

direct them as well as I could have done. Carleigh told Erol and I to put our stamps on it but

that was the day of our last rehearsal with them which made it hard because we wanted to

shape what they had first which is a form of directing but I felt if I put more of myself in it

wouldn't be there's it I could have been more artistic and creative. At the beginning of the

process we had the most material and shape to our piece when we showed everyone and most

of the company laughed and when asked for feedback it was mostly positive for our group. As

time went on ours was the least popular with everyone and I felt sorry for my group because I

felt as though I have let them down and then Gavin cut most of their piece and I think it was

for the best. Erol and I did say make as much material so that it can be cut and shaped into the

most workable and creative ideas. When our theme was changed to a television channel, I feel

it was for the better but looking at the whole show, it was missed it blended in with the rest of

the show and was lost because it was so similar and the other groups you could tell it was a

piece of work that was created in a clump. My group were on the same page as the Erol and I

from the beginning that they didn't want it to be really serious but we wanted to be an

uplifting piece about a sensitive subject. I feel the process we went through I liked and there

was one time when I felt like a director when we did a workshop on the slow motion and I

directed them and I felt I build an atmosphere in the room with their response to what I was

saying, which I felt was the most successful part of my directing during the process. I'm proudof my actors and loved the journey I went on personally with them, however I feel the end

product wasn't creative enough for what we could have achieved together and in comparison

with the other groups it was completely different, success; however in the whole show and a

piece it was lost and the other groups shined out; unsuccessful.

    Individual Strengthsand Weaknesses

    ASSERTIVE

I feel I went in with an attitude to the work and the actors knew I was there for that, as Patsy says no

director or actor should want to be liked they should be there for the work, which I felt I was. I felt I

was assertive with what I said and when I demanded something of them and they didn't do it I waited

and told them they are cutting into their time, I tried to get it into their heads that I'm working with

them not against them to produce the work and I felt me being bad cop for the beginning got them

responding better as if I went in all smiles and push over.

    PLANNING

During this process I always had a plan of what we would run in our morning sessions with the actors,we didn't have a lot of time so we wanted to dive right in and start creating material. I thought that

given 3 hours in the morning would be too much and I wouldn't know what to do, I dug out some

workshops we did in our first show and got them to know each other as well as us and give them direct

to see how they would take to it. I felt I always had a plan when Erol didn't and I had a back up plan if

that didn't work, so there was always something to do and somewhere we could go with the idea.

    SHAPING IDEAS

Erol and I were in agreement that we were going to give the piece to the actors and it would essentially

be their piece that they created and devised and we would just shape ideas. I felt that we cut and

shapes the most workable and creative ideas, shaped them and worked on them. I felt I also worked

with the actors so if they said we like this bit we want it in and I didn't agree I would discuss with themwhy and we would talk about it and the result would be decided. I felt I worked with them rather than

director, actor which I felt was a more positive way to work.

    PATIENCE

My newspaper group were the most unfocused group and I don't have time for childish behaviour,

there were times when I sent them away because I don't feel they took our group seriously or they

liked the process of our group enough to bother. There were some actors I couldn't deal with such as

Reece always going off being on his phone, Jamie likewise as well as Morgan. There were some girls

who were unfocused but still wanted to do the work so I felt sorry for them when we had to senteveryone else away and I felt patience was a weakness of mine throughout the process because it was

stressful teaching them how to be an actor and professional in the space when I don't think this

    should have been our job.

    TEAMWORK

There were times when Erol and I didn't see eye to eye and he wanted to be liked so going in there

with that attitude of being good cop and me being bad we tended to clash. I felt we got stuck

sometimes because he would say something that just wasn't logical and I suggested a different way

which he then agreed on because it would work better, because I had experience of the Beano I

understand more a directors mind set and working with Robbie I learnt a lot. I felt we were left to

our own devices a lot when I felt we should have had more guidance from the other directors on thepiece because Erol and I got notes towards the end of the process when I felt if they were earlier on

the piece would have been different. We changed the piece to what they asked and in the final

product when reflecting they say it doesn't work, so we changed our piece for them when it didn't

work and for me that hurts because I feel the piece I'm not happy with overall which is upsetting.

    PERSONA

The way I came into the process was deliberate to have that stern attitude so that they wouldn't walk

all over me and I got softer nearer the end and joked with them, however I feel like it was hard still

being put in this student category when Erol and I were sent off the floor at different times and it

wasn't a great role model to look up to, I feel we both gave this across and the was we worked in

front of them sometimes we should have been more professional and I think they way I conducted

myself I should have taken another look at.

    Company Strengthsand Weaknesses

    Newspaper Project 4

    HONING SKILLS

I feel that we underestimate ourselves as individuals and as a company

most of the time and I feel that this process showed how much we have

learnt over our time at the miskin to know whether something works or doesn't

work and identifying what that is. I feel that we have showed a great skill in

devising a piece in a directorial role independently.

    PRODUCING THE WORK

We had a final piece and we had a process where we all got to the same goal and

achieved and produced the work we did and to the standard it was. We worked with the

actors to create a piece for their first show and got to know them as a company as well

which I feel is a real strength.

    LEARNING

I feel we have all learnt something from this process as directors that we can bring to

developing ourselves as better actors. I feel we have learnt form each other, the

actors and the process which is a strength because at least we have learnt

something and had a shared experience as a company in groups of directors to

produce work on the other side of the spectrum.

    Tasks Successful?

The tasks were a lot harder this time around because I always find researching can be a chore

and finding out about previous practitioners boring, but I found it more interesting because what

I have been through with the Beano in recent times. The researching contemporary directors

was hard because there we certain boxes we had to tick but I couldn't find anything solid on

directors work I have liked only directors I find interesting but I haven't seen there work on

researched it. I thought becoming Patsy Rosenberg was a great fun way or researching and I

feel we should take this approach to these tasks more often; I learnt a lot more this way. I also

found as a company we all have very di!erent thoughts on directing as on the company site

discussion that Carleigh up. I thought it was also beneficial to have weekly evaluations of our

directing experience on the blog so we could discuss what was happening in our group and find

out the troubles and successes in others as well.

    Newspaper Project 5

TEAMWORKI believe some of us haven't worked as efficiently as a team and I beige as a

company we didn't look out for one another as much as we could have and I feel this

was an element that was missed from the process. I feel with everyone attitude and a

competitiveness against groups I felt we were working against each other than with one

    another.

    BEING STERN

Most actors admitted more the shy ones such as Harriet, Daniella and Alex said they found it

hard to be stern and I find that I don't mind coming across as a bitch if it's for the work and I am

stern and they don't Iike me that's fine. I feel everyone is too caught up with how they look and

if they are liked and I think everyone should take a page out of Patsy's book. I feel telling them

what to do is what was needed in this process as they were in the beginning stages of moulding

them into the actors they will become.

    ATTITUDE

Before the process even started some people Levi and Harriet had a negative attitude that

they didn't even want to do this process and others like Sam and I were really up for

getting this directing experience. I feel that some actors were just lazy and I felt this

brought a pessimistic attitude before starting the process which I believe affected

the work and some individuals didn't get as much out of it as they could have from

    this opportunity.

More time?Knowing how in the middle of the success scale it was I wouldn't change the content of the

piece because I felt it was the actors creation but I believe I should have shaped it more in a

stylistic way as a director to put my stamp on it. I would have tweaked a lot of things and

would have tried connecting with the actors more as a company, I feel I would have changed

the way we were introduced. Overall I don't think I would change a lot if I had more time butmould and shape them into more a stylistic vision.

What Do You know Now?As a company I feel we have collectively learnt what it is to be a director and what the role

takes. I feel we all reflect on ourselves now as to whether we are that actors who is irritating

or not acting professional. I feel we have learnt from the newspaper company as well as from

each other and in our own groups of directors have learnt the strengths in one another and

those relationships. I feel we see the bigger picture more and not just the oblivious actors side

to what it looks liked because we see the piece being created and unfolded and sparking ideas

to blend and mould them together to make it work. I feel we have learnt all this that will nowmould us better as actors and when it comes to devising for the schools project we will also be

able to bring more creative ideas to the floor to show Carleigh and style them out and think in

the two minds of if I'm and actor and what if I was standing form the outside watching this.

I feel I learnt more during the Beano process as a director and I brought than to this directing

role, I felt there wasn't room to learn as much this time because I was teaching them which is

not how I want to work with actors. I feel I've learnt from the different spectrum of things such

as what it's like to work with certain actors and individuals in a company and how they work. I

have learnt more about Erol and his strengths and weaknesses in the other side, as well as

seeing the other groups pieces and seeing how strong they are and seeing what they created. It

was a good process to go through as a company to develop our training and gain wider skills. Ifeel I haven't learnt more about the history or directing and what it is to be a director.
